The Looming Retirement of Millions of Small Business Owners: What Happens Next?

Millions of small business owners, mostly baby boomers, are set to retire in the next decade, poten…
The impending retirement of millions of small business owners, primarily from the baby boomer generation, poses a significant challenge for the US economy. According to the Small Business Administration, there are approximately 33 million small businesses in the US, but fewer than 7 million employ people. The rest are often solo operations or side gigs with little to no value if the owner were to suddenly disappear. Many small business owners, like the author, operate in a service-based economy, which accounts for 77% of US GDP. These businesses are often built around the owner, with no hard assets to sell, making them unattractive to potential buyers. The author's own business is a prime example, with no valuable assets, a virtual office, and remote employees. A recent McKinsey report predicts a "great ownership transfer" over the next 10 years, with as many as 6 million small and midsize American businesses changing hands. However, without intentional action, many viable small businesses may close rather than transfer ownership. So, what are the options for these business owners? They could hand down the business to their kids, but this only works if the kids are interested and capable. Another option is to build an actual business with value by changing billing models, enforcing contracts, and creating a sustainable brand. However, this approach can be exhausting, especially for older business owners. A more practical approach for service business owners is to build cash and save for retirement. The author has been pulling profits out of their company and saving, planning for retirement through their savings rather than their business. This transition presents a great opportunity for younger entrepreneurs, who could partner with or purchase businesses from older owners, leveraging their existing operations, customers, and relationships to make improvements and grow the business.

Unlocking the Science of Luck: How Behavioural Neuroscience Can Change Your Life

Discover how behavioural neuroscience reveals that luck is not just chance, but a set of identifiab…
The concept of luck has long been shrouded in mystery, often attributed to chance or fate. However, behavioural neuroscience has made significant strides in uncovering the underlying mechanisms that govern luck. According to research, luck is not just a roll of the dice, but rather a complex interplay of brain chemistry and behaviour that can be influenced and cultivated. The neuroscience behind luck reveals that it operates through identifiable patterns of brain chemistry and behaviour. Studies have shown that the consistently lucky are not blessed by fate, but rather, they possess a unique set of habits and characteristics that enable them to capitalize on opportunities and navigate challenges more effectively. Brain imaging techniques have even identified specific regions of the brain that are activated when individuals perceive themselves as lucky, shifting their perception from threat-detection mode to opportunity-recognition mode.Serotonin production, regulated by morning sunlight, tryptophan-rich foods, and a regular sleep-wake cycle, plays a critical role in determining one's luck. Individuals who prioritize these factors are more likely to experience a boost in serotonin levels, which in turn, enhances their mood, social confidence, and resilience. Conversely, those who lead erratic lifestyles and neglect these factors may find themselves chronically sleep-deprived and less likely to encounter fortunate events.Lucky individuals also tend to possess a clear awareness of their interests and passions, which guides their decision-making and behaviour. By following their 'fascination compass', they are more likely to stumble upon opportunities and experiences that align with their values and goals. Novelty-seeking and a willingness to take calculated risks also characterize lucky individuals, as they understand that each small departure from routine can be a ticket to new experiences and encounters.Generosity and a willingness to help others without expectation of return are also key characteristics of lucky individuals. Brain imaging studies have shown that acts of genuine generosity activate the brain's deepest reward centre, releasing feel-good chemicals that reinforce positive behaviours and build social capital. By investing in others and cultivating meaningful relationships, lucky individuals create a network of opportunities and support that can help them navigate life's challenges. In conclusion, luck is not just a matter of chance, but rather a complex interplay of brain chemistry, behaviour, and habit. By understanding the underlying mechanisms that govern luck and incorporating these insights into daily life, individuals can increase their chances of experiencing fortunate events and leading a more fulfilling life.

Spotting Fake Vapes: How to Identify and Avoid Illegal Devices

The UK vape industry is warning consumers about the dangers of fake vapes, which can cause health p…
The UK vape industry is sounding the alarm about the proliferation of fake vapes on the market, which can pose serious health risks to users. These counterfeit devices are often sold in high street shops and can look identical to legitimate products, making them difficult to spot.According to the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA), around 5m illegal devices have been seized over the last three years, with a street value of £39m. These devices often lack safety features, such as circuit protection to prevent overheating, which can cause them to catch fire.John Dunne, head of the UKVIA, warns that fake vapes may cause damage to people's health as they have not undergone the same testing regime as legal devices. 'Where the packaging might look similar and the product itself may look similar, these companies may not have the same safety features built into the device, because the copycats tend to try and make the product as cheap as possible,' he says. So, how can you spot a fake vape? One of the key telltale signs is if the box does not have a UK distributor's address on it. Other signs include poor-quality packaging with low-resolution photos or labels, and missing nicotine warnings and ingredient lists. The device name or labelling may also be written in a foreign language. If you suspect that you have bought a fake vape, you can file a report through the UKVIA or contact your local Trading Standards office. You can also check whether a brand has been registered with the MHRA through its website.

Middle East Pipelines Offer Alternative to Strait of Hormuz for Oil Exports

The ongoing conflict between the US and Israel and Iran has severely disrupted shipping traffic thr…
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil exports, has seen its traffic plunge by over 95 percent since the US and Israel began strikes on Iran. This disruption has led to a significant increase in pressure on oil and gas markets, with 20 percent of the world's oil and gas typically passing through the strait. To mitigate the impact of the strait's closure, countries in the Middle East are turning to alternative routes for energy exports. Three major pipelines in the region are being explored as potential solutions:Saudi Arabia's East-West PipelineThe East-West Pipeline, also known as the Petroline, is operated by Saudi oil giant Aramco. With a capacity of 7 million barrels per day (bpd), the pipeline runs from the Abqaiq oil processing centre to the Yanbu port on the Red Sea. However, it currently only has the capacity to supply 5 million bpd for exports.UAE's Abu Dhabi Crude Oil PipelineThe Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline, also called the ADCOP or Habshan-Fujairah pipeline, has a capacity of 1.5 million bpd. Oil exports from Fujairah have risen in the past month, averaging 1.62 million bpd in March compared to 1.17 million bpd in February.Iraq-Turkiye Crude Oil PipelineThe Iraq-Turkiye Crude Oil Pipeline, also called the Kirkuk-Ceyhan Pipeline, has a capacity of 1.6 million bpd but currently only carries around 200,000 bpd. Iraq is among the top five global producers of oil and the second largest within the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).Can these pipelines replace the Strait of Hormuz? While these pipelines can take on some of the capacity of Hormuz, their combined capacity is only around 9 million bpd, compared to 20 million bpd for the strait. Additionally, these pipelines are land-based and vulnerable to attacks and damage in the ongoing conflict.

Russia Labels Oscar-Winning Documentary Protagonist a 'Foreign Agent'

Russia has declared Pavel Talankin, the protagonist of the Oscar-winning documentary 'Mr Nobody Aga…
Russia has officially designated Pavel Talankin, the main protagonist of the Oscar-winning documentary 'Mr Nobody Against Putin', as a 'foreign agent'. This move comes after Talankin, a teacher and videographer, spent two years documenting pro-war propaganda at a school in the Chelyabinsk region of west-central Russia.Talankin, in collaboration with US director David Borenstein, won the Best Documentary award at the Academy Awards earlier this month. The documentary features footage Talankin smuggled out of Russia in 2024, showcasing how students were exposed to pro-war messaging.A Russian court recently banned the documentary from several streaming platforms, citing that it promoted 'negative attitudes' about the Russian government and the war in Ukraine. Since Russia's full-scale military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian authorities have sought to suppress opposition to the war and rally support among citizens. As a 'foreign agent', Talankin is subject to stringent bureaucratic requirements and income restrictions in Russia. He is also obligated to label his social media posts and publications with the 'foreign agent' designation. In his Oscar acceptance speech on March 15, 2026, Talankin urged an end to global conflicts, stating, 'Stop all of these wars now'. The documentary has sparked controversy, with some Russians opposing Putin and the war criticizing Talankin for filming colleagues and children without consent.

Investors Bet on Trump's Iran Policy Reversals: The TACO Trade

The ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran has led to a phenomenon known as the TACO tra…
The conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran has entered its fourth week, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining effectively closed. This has led to a broadening of the global energy crisis, with the economic outlook darkening across Asia, Europe, and beyond.Japan has responded by releasing 80 million barrels of oil from its national reserves, enough to last for 45 days. The country's reliance on Middle Eastern crude oil imports stands at 90 percent. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has warned that the conflict will have a significant impact on the UK economy, predicting inflation of 4 percent this year. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has stated that Iran cannot be allowed to hold the global economy hostage. The uncertainty surrounding Trump's policy on Iran has led to the emergence of the TACO trade, an acronym that stands for Trump Always Chickens Out. This phenomenon refers to investors betting that the US president will back down from his threats, resulting in profits for those who bought in.Observers note that Trump's inconsistent messaging has created an opportunity for investors to bet on his policy reversals. For example, Trump extended his deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz from 48 hours to five days, and later promised to hold off from attacks on Iran's energy facilities for an additional 10 days. This type of about-face has opened the door to investors willing to bet that the US president will back down.Lena Komileva, chief economist at consultancy firm (g+)economics, notes that global markets have been less inclined to rebound after Trump's Iran-related policy reversals compared to similar shifts in response to his tariff policies. This is due to the complexity of the conflict and the unique objectives of the parties involved.

Miedema's Double Powers Manchester City to Dominant Derby Win, Nearing WSL Crown

Manchester City secured a commanding 3-0 victory over rivals Manchester United in the Women's Super…
Manchester City delivered a resounding statement of intent in their latest Women's Super League fixture, dismantling Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford in a derby that showcased the vast gulf between the two teams. The victory propelled City closer to securing their first league title in a decade, while simultaneously damaging United's hopes of European qualification next season.Vivianne Miedema was the star of the show, scoring twice with headers in the first half, while Kerstin Casparij added a third goal early in the second period. Lauren Hemp also hit the crossbar as City dominated throughout, with the home side fortunate not to concede more goals in a match that highlighted the disparity between the teams.Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner attributed his team's performance to fatigue following their Champions League encounter with Bayern Munich three days prior. In contrast, City has benefited from not competing in European competitions this season, allowing for crucial rest between matches. Skinner acknowledged the advantage enjoyed by City manager Andrée Jeglertz, who described his team's first-half display as "one of the best we've done this season."The result has effectively ended United's title ambitions, with Skinner's side now trailing by 11 points with only three games remaining. Chelsea's hopes of retaining their crown have also been extinguished, as they sit 12 points behind with an inferior goal difference. Arsenal remains the only mathematical challenger, though they would need City to falter significantly in their remaining fixtures.City's dominance was evident from the opening minutes, with Miedema opening the scoring from a corner just 21 seconds into the match. She doubled her tally before the break, finding herself unmarked in the penalty area as United's defense failed to deal with a cross from Casparij. Hemp struck the woodwork before a Rebecca Knaak goal was controversially disallowed, and Casparij sealed the victory with a clinical finish after the interval. With City now requiring just five points from their remaining three matches—all against bottom-four teams—the WSL title appears destined to return to the Etihad Stadium. Meanwhile, United faces an uphill battle to secure European qualification, with challenging fixtures against Tottenham and Chelsea still to come this season.

Gulf States Warn of Escalating Threat from Iran-Backed Militias

Gulf countries have raised concerns over the growing threat from Iran-backed militias and proxy arm…
Gulf countries are increasingly concerned about the threat posed by Iran-backed militias and proxy armed groups in the region. These groups, which include Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen, have been used by Iran as a pillar of its foreign and security policy for decades. In a joint statement, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan condemned Iranian attacks on their soil, both as strikes carried out directly from Iran and “through their proxies and armed factions they support in the region”. The statement also called on the Iraqi government to take measures to halt attacks launched by factions, militias, and armed groups from Iraqi territory.Kuwait recently foiled a plot to kill state leaders and arrested six suspects believed to be associated with Hezbollah. The Houthis also confirmed they had launched a missile strike on Israel, the first time the proxy group have admitted involvement in the war in the Middle East. The threat of these groups is seen as particularly worrying for countries such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, which have a history of Iran-backed militia carrying out violent attacks. Analysts warn that the presence and danger of Iranian proxy groups in the Gulf had not reached levels anything close to those during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, but the threat remains greater the longer the conflict with Iran drags on.Bilal Saab, a senior managing director of the Trends US thinktank, said: “If this war escalates, the worst-case scenario for the Gulf countries is Iran activating their sleeper cells and these Shia militia movements in the region. We could see a whole lot more if things really escalate.”
