Introducing AI-Powered Editing in Apple Photos Apple announced at WWDC 2026 on Monday that its Photos app is getting a few new AI features that leverage Apple Intelligence. The Reframe Feature: Adjusting Image Perspective A new spatial “Reframe” feature will let users use AI to reframe images. For instance, if a user accidentally captures a sign above someone’s head, if the photo would have been more symmetrical by stepping slightly to the right, or if eye contact with a subject was missed by a fraction of a second, the new reframing tool can help fix all of these issues. Users can touch and drag photos to adjust the perspective as if they had repositioned the camera in the original scene. Users can also preview the effect in real time. As the photo is being adjusted, a blur will appear around the edges of the original image, which will be filled later by Apple’s generative models. The feature only generates new content to fill in the gaps where the perspective has been affected to ensure that the reframe photo stays consistent with the original scene. Expanding Images with the Extend Tool The “Extend” tool expands images to give subjects more breathing room, or to straighten a crooked horizon without cropping out anything important. Users can pinch to zoom out, or adjust the crop to add more to the scene. Upgraded Cleanup Tool The app’s popular “Cleanup” tool is also getting an upgrade so users can remove distractions with better quality and more realistic infill with generative AI. The feature lets users tap, brush, or circle what they want to remove. The Future of AI in Apple Photos These new AI features aim to enhance the user experience in Apple Photos, providing more flexibility and control over image editing. With Apple Intelligence at its core, the Photos app is set to become even more powerful and intuitive.

Apple Unveils Standalone Siri App: The Biggest Overhaul in Assistant History

Apple has fundamentally reimagined Siri at WWDC 2026, introducing a dedicated standalone app that t…
The Evolution of Siri: From System Assistant to Standalone AppAt WWDC 2026, Apple announced the most significant overhaul of Siri in its history, introducing a dedicated standalone app that mirrors the functionality of modern chatbots like ChatGPT. This move marks a fundamental shift from Siri being a passive system-level trigger to an active, persistent application users can open, scroll through, and manage.Archived Conversations: The app functions as a digital warehouse, storing past interactions for easy access.Multi-Modal Interface: Users can now input text, upload documents, share images, and utilize voice mode within a single interface.Cross-Device Sync: The assistant is accessible across iOS, MacOS, and iPadOS, with all history synced privately via iCloud.A New Era of Persistent InteractionThe introduction of this app suggests a strategic pivot in how Apple intends to handle AI. By giving Siri a dedicated space, Apple is allowing users to engage in long-form, complex tasks without relying solely on voice commands or system shortcuts. The ability to scroll through transcripts and view overviews of previous sessions provides a level of transparency and usability previously unseen in Apple's ecosystem.Redefining the AI Assistant LandscapeThis development challenges the current dominance of web-based chatbots by bringing persistent, conversational AI directly into the native operating system. By integrating this functionality into the core OS, Apple ensures that the assistant is always available, regardless of the specific app or screen a user is currently viewing. The emphasis on privacy, with all data syncing privately via iCloud, addresses a critical concern for users transitioning from public AI models to private, integrated assistants. The Future of Digital InteractionAs Apple continues to expand the capabilities of its AI system, the standalone app will likely become the central hub for all digital assistance needs. We can expect this interface to evolve into a gateway for deeper integration with third-party services, effectively turning the Siri app into a universal command center that bridges the gap between human intent and digital execution.

Apple's Native Solution to the Awkward Dinner Bill Split

Apple is addressing the social friction of dining bills by introducing a native Siri in Camera feat…
The End of Awkward Bill SplittingGoing out to dinner with a large group often leads to a logistical headache: the "even split" dilemma. You might abstain from alcohol to save money, yet you are still expected to subsidize your friends' expensive espresso martinis. This social friction often results in awkward pauses while someone manually recalculates the bill or awkwardly refuses to pay their fair share. At WWDC 2026, Apple has introduced a native solution designed to eliminate this social friction entirely.Scanning Receipts to Automate SplittingThe core breakthrough is the integration of Siri in Camera within the native Camera app. The workflow is designed to be frictionless: users simply point their iPhone at a physical receipt. The AI then analyzes the text and renders each line item as selectable elements on the screen.Visual Recognition: The camera app identifies individual food and drink items.Selection: Users tap to select exactly what they ordered.Automated Settlement: The system generates separate Apple Cash payment requests for each person based on their specific selections."If you’re grabbing a bite with friends and point your iPhone at the bill, then [you can] select what you ordered to split the tab with Apple Cash," explained Sebastien Marineau-Mes, Apple VP of Software.Reducing Transaction FrictionWhile third-party apps like SplitWise and Tab have offered this functionality for years, they have struggled to gain mainstream traction due to the friction of downloading and managing separate applications. Apple’s new feature solves this by embedding the utility directly into the operating system's native messaging and payment architecture. This approach leverages the existing trust and infrastructure of iMessage and Apple Cash, making the payment request feel organic rather than like a chore. By removing the barrier of entry (downloading an app), Apple is positioning this feature as the default solution for social payments. The Death of Third-Party Splitting Apps? The introduction of this feature signals a significant shift in the mobile payments ecosystem. It highlights a trend where major tech platforms are moving to capture utility features that have historically been served by niche startups. By offering a seamless, native experience that integrates directly into the user's daily workflow, Apple makes it difficult for third-party competitors to compete on convenience. The Future of Context-Aware AIBeyond bill splitting, the Siri in Camera feature hints at a broader future for AI as a utility tool. The same technology that can parse a receipt can be applied to other real-world scenarios, such as identifying nutritional information or providing instant context about the environment. As these visual recognition capabilities become more robust, the iPhone camera will likely evolve from a passive recording device into an active, intelligent assistant for daily decision-making.

US Judge Strikes Down Trump's $100,000 H1-B Visa Fee

A US federal judge has struck down a $100,000 fee imposed by President Donald Trump on new H-1B vis…
The Ruling A United States federal judge has struck down a $100,000 fee that US President Donald Trump imposed on new H-1B visas for highly skilled foreign workers, concluding that it constituted an unlawful tax that Congress never authorised. The Background US District Judge Leo Sorokin in Boston issued the ruling on Monday in a lawsuit filed by 20 Democratic state attorneys general challenging a fee Trump announced in September that dramatically raised the cost of obtaining H-1B visas. The Impact on H-1B Visas The H-1B programme offers 65,000 visas annually, with another 20,000 visas for workers with advanced degrees, approved for three to six years. Employers seeking a visa for a foreign worker before Trump’s proclamation typically paid about $2,000 to $5,000 in fees depending on various factors. The Fee's Effectiveness The increase in fees has discouraged H-1B visa requests, according to court filings. As of February 15, US Citizenship and Immigration Services had received just 85 payments of the $100,000 fee, the administration said in a March filing. The Judge's Decision But Sorokin, who was appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama, concluded that the fee was not a penalty but a tax that the Republican president lacked any authorisation from Congress to issue. The Future Outlook “Here, the substance and application of the $100,000 payment reveal that it is a tax, regardless of what the payment is called,” he wrote. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple Enhances Parental Controls on iPhone for Kids

Apple has introduced new tools to give parents more control over their kids' iPhone use, including …
Enhanced Parental Controls At its WWDC 2026 event, Apple introduced a host of tools designed to put parents back in control over how their kids are using the iPhone. This includes features that let parents decide who a child can talk to, what apps they can use, and whether they can visit specific websites, as well as access to other tools to block inappropriate texts, manage screen time schedules, find age-appropriate app suggestions, and more. Redesigned Screen Time Controls The redesigned version of its Screen Time controls builds on the technology Apple already offers, expanding its capabilities in new ways with more granular controls. This comes as the mental health impacts of technology on children’s development have come to the foreground of people’s minds, and as new laws and regulations are attempting to rein in kids’ access to devices and social media. Age-Based Restrictions When creating a child’s accounts on a new device, Apple will tailor safeguards to their age, blocking adult websites, allowing only age-appropriate media, and setting age-based restrictions on the App Store. Parents can adjust these settings if they prefer, but now they can go even further. Smart App Suggestions For instance, parents can start off by providing kids access only to the content they’re comfortable with, then add more over time, as they deem it appropriate. Apple will make smart app suggestions upon setup, letting parents pick whether they want to only give a child access to the essentials, or if they want to pick and choose specific apps the child can use. Website and Contact Controls Parents will also be able to control access to which websites kids can browse — a feature that’s been much in demand since kids have historically used websites to work around parental controls that would restrict access to certain apps, often social media. The feature, “Ask to Browse,” works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac with Safari, Apple notes. And it, along with “Ask to Buy” for apps and games, is on by default for kids under 13. Screen Time Allowance Recommendations The company’s existing Screen Time lets parents set up a schedule and choose which apps are available on which days and at which times. What’s new is that Apple is now relying on experts’ advice to make some initial screen time allowance recommendations, based on a child’s age and the app category. Apple said it consulted with the American Academy of Pediatrics and others on this feature. Rollout and Developer APIs The new parental controls will roll out to consumers with the release of iOS 27 in the fall. App developers, meanwhile, are offered a full suite of APIs that let them protect against nudity and violent content in apps, help ensure parents approve any new contacts in apps, or ensure a child is of age to use their app, among other options.

Apple Unveils Systemwide Dictation Powered by Gemini-Based Intelligence at WWDC 2026

Apple announced a systemwide dictation feature for iOS 27 at WWDC 2026, powered by a model based on…
The LeadApple has officially unveiled a transformative update to its mobile operating system at WWDC 2026, introducing a systemwide dictation experience powered by a custom Apple Intelligence model derived from Google's Gemini architecture. This feature, integrated directly into the keyboard, promises to eliminate the friction of third-party AI tools by offering seamless spelling, punctuation, and capitalization correction across all applications. The Integration of Gemini-Based IntelligenceThe core of this update is the deployment of a dictation engine that functions as a native layer within iOS 27. Unlike previous iterations that required separate applications, this new system allows users to dictate text anywhere, with the AI immediately refining the output for grammar and flow. This technical shift suggests a move toward "invisible AI," where intelligent text processing is background infrastructure rather than a standalone app.The Competitive Landscape of AI DictationWhile specific market share numbers are not provided, the strategic implications are clear. The AI dictation market has seen a surge in popularity with tools like Wispr Flow, Willow, and Monologue, which specialize in cleaning up filler words and formatting context-aware text. Apple’s move to integrate this functionality directly into the OS creates a significant barrier to entry for these third-party developers. Furthermore, this follows Google's recent release of a similar systemwide feature via Gboard, indicating a race to dominate the "zero-touch" text input experience.Redefining the Keyboard EcosystemThis update fundamentally alters the relationship between users and third-party developers. By restricting certain dictation apps in iOS 26.4 and now offering a superior, built-in alternative, Apple is signaling a shift toward tighter control over the input layer. For developers of AI dictation tools, the challenge is no longer just building a better algorithm, but finding a way to integrate with Apple's new native infrastructure without being rendered obsolete by the OS itself. The Future of Third-Party AI IntegrationLooking ahead, the success of this feature will depend on Apple's openness to third-party workflows. While the current implementation offers a superior user experience, it risks alienating developers who built their businesses on the gap between iOS keyboards and native dictation. We can expect Apple to either open specific APIs for these apps or face a consolidation in the AI dictation market as developers struggle to compete with a feature that is now free and deeply integrated into the operating system.
