Marco Bezzecchi Banned from Czech MotoGP After Incident with Track Steward
The Incident
Marco Bezzecchi, the 27-year-old Italian Aprilia Racing rider and current MotoGP championship leader, was involved in a significant incident during Saturday's sprint at the Czech GP. After crashing out with two laps to go, Bezzecchi ran towards a track steward, pushed him, and then slapped him in the face as the steward was standing over his bike in the gravel.
The Consequences
The MotoGP stewards took immediate action, banning Bezzecchi from participating in Sunday's Czech GP. A document published by the FIM MotoGP Stewards association stated that Bezzecchi's actions, following a crash where he pushed and struck circuit marshals trying to recover his machine, constituted an infringement of Article 3.3.2.2. This action was deemed 'prejudicial to the interests of the sport'.
The Appeal and Final Decision
Aprilia Racing appealed the stewards' decision on Saturday, but the appeal stewards upheld the verdict. Aprilia announced that they would not protest any further, confirming Bezzecchi's ban from the Czech GP.
The Impact on Bezzecchi's Championship Hopes
This incident and subsequent ban are significant blows to Bezzecchi's aspirations for a maiden MotoGP title. This setback follows his failure to finish the Hungarian GP two weeks prior, where his teammate Jorge Martin was involved in a crash that took both riders out. Martin will have to serve two long-lap penalties for causing that crash, adding to Aprilia's challenges at Brno.
Bezzecchi's Apology
In response to the incident, Bezzecchi issued a statement apologizing to the entire MotoGP community, Aprilia Racing, and his fans. He expressed regret for his behavior towards the trackside marshal, acknowledging the critical role marshals play in ensuring rider safety and condemning his own actions as unjustifiable.
The Current Standings
Despite this setback, Bezzecchi still leads the MotoGP rankings with 180 points, ahead of Jorge Martin with 165 points and Fabio Di Giannantonio of Ducati with 146 points.
