The University of Manchester's New Initiative The University of Manchester is promising work placements to all undergraduates – regardless of their degree – to better equip them for the challenges of the current job market. This move appears to be a first for a large Russell Group institution. Details of the Placement Program Manchester’s vice-chancellor, Duncan Ivison, emphasized that no student should graduate having done three years of just academic study. Instead, “every single student [should] have a chance to put their learning into context – an internship, a placement, a joint project or an exchange”. The program aims to provide “meaningful real-world experience” to all students, from classics to chemical engineering. The initiative includes placements, short internships, live employer projects, or work with public or community organizations. Those who do get work are often in low-paid roles in hospitality or retail, rather than traditional graduate jobs. 32,000 undergraduates are currently enrolled at Manchester University. In 2024-25, almost a quarter of undergraduate courses gave students the option of a placement of at least a year. The Prediction Vivienne Stern, chief executive of Universities UK, welcomed the initiative, stating that the jobs market is changing rapidly and universities have an important role to play in preparing students for the world of work. Extent of the Funding Crisis An anonymous poll of leaders by Universities UK (UUK) revealed that more than two-thirds of vice-chancellors are prepared to cut staff jobs by compulsory redundancy if difficulties continue over the next three years. Nearly 90% said they are looking at hiring freezes or voluntary redundancies. Financial Impact on Students Nearly a third of vice-chancellors said they would cut hardship funding for current students if necessary. More than half said they were prepared to cut access and outreach activity, aimed at encouraging students to go to university, over the next three years. Expert Warnings Experts have warned that further cuts in support for students could make higher education inaccessible for those who most need it. Lee Elliot-Major, a professor of social mobility at the University of Exeter, said: "A retreat from access and hardship funding risks pulling up the ladder on a whole generation at a time when growing numbers of students are facing unprecedented financial pressures and increasing uncertainty about the value of a degree." Future Outlook The vice-chancellors surveyed said that cuts could occur across the board if financial conditions worsen, including to research, buildings and maintenance. Many are considering mergers or partnerships with other universities.
