Google Introduces Fake Call Detection to Combat AI Deepfake Scams

Google is rolling out a fake call detection feature for Android devices to protect users against AI…
The LeadGoogle announced on Tuesday that Android is launching fake call detection to protect against AI deepfake impersonation scams. The feature is rolling out globally in Phone by Google to Android 12+ devices this month, starting with Pixel devices. The Digital Defense Against Deepfake ScamsAs people increasingly refuse to answer calls from unknown numbers, scammers are shifting their tactics by spoofing trusted phone numbers and using AI deepfake technology to sound like authority figures, family members, or employers. For example, a person may receive a phone call showing the caller ID "Mom," and the voice may sound exactly like her, but the caller is actually a scammer using AI tools to impersonate her and request money for a fake emergency. The Technology Behind Fake Call DetectionThe new feature is on by default and works automatically behind the scenes. Google explains that the new feature works kind of like a "digital handshake between devices." When a contact calls you, and you're both using Phone by Google, their phone sends a silent confirmation signal to your device to verify the call is legitimate and actually coming from their phone."If a scammer tries to impersonate your trusted contact, that initial confirmation signal will be missing," Google explained in a blog post. "Your device will instantly notice this and ping your contact's actual device to double-check. If their real device says, 'I'm not making a call right now,' you'll get a warning on your screen advising you to hang up immediately."The Industry's Response to AI Impersonation ThreatsThe tech giant notes that it built this feature on top of Rich Communication Services (RCS), making it possible for other apps and companies to adopt the technology. This development comes as AI-generated content becomes increasingly sophisticated and accessible, raising concerns about its potential misuse in scams and misinformation campaigns. The Future of Call AuthenticationGoogle's fake call detection represents a significant step in addressing the growing threat of AI-powered impersonation scams. As these technologies become more prevalent, we can expect to see more authentication features being developed across communication platforms. The adoption of RCS as a foundation for this technology suggests that call authentication may become a standard feature in future communication protocols.

Barry Diller’s $18 Billion Gamble: People Inc Targets MGM Resorts

Media mogul Barry Diller’s People Inc has launched a $18 billion bid to acquire the remaining stake…
Media mogul Barry Diller’s People Inc has proposed a cash offer to acquire the remaining 73.9% of MGM Resorts, valuing the casino giant at over $18 billion. This move represents a significant strategic shift for Diller, who previously criticized the stock as "wildly undervalued" in an April letter to shareholders. The $18 Billion Bet on Las Vegas People Inc, which recently rebranded from IAC, currently holds a 26.1% stake in MGM Resorts. The proposed bid of $48.30 per share represents a 10.6% premium to MGM’s Friday close of $43.67. This aggressive valuation comes just weeks after Diller signaled his intent to sharpen the company's focus on its casino holdings. Current Stake: People Inc owns 26.1% of outstanding common stock. Offer Price: $48.30 per share in cash. Market Reaction: MGM shares rose over 10% in premarket trading; People shares rose nearly 3%. Valuation Premium and Market Reaction The offer positions Diller against a backdrop of intense consolidation in the hospitality sector. Last week, billionaire Tilman Fertitta announced a $17.6 billion takeover of Caesars Entertainment. While the MGM offer is slightly higher, analysts view the premium as a necessary incentive to unlock value in a company that has faced sluggish footfall in recent quarters. Diller’s Strategic Pivot from Digital to Physical For Diller, MGM represents a sharp departure from his digital media roots. By acquiring a physical asset, he gains exposure to the travel and tourism industry, which offers stability compared to the volatile digital media landscape. MGM’s portfolio, which accounts for roughly 40% of the Las Vegas Strip, combined with its successful digital arm, BetMGM, provides a diversified revenue stream that appeals to investors seeking tangible assets. A New Era of Casino Consolidation The bid signals a broader trend of industry consolidation. As the casino sector grapples with post-pandemic recovery and shifting consumer behaviors, major players are looking to merge to achieve economies of scale. Diller’s entry into the fray confirms that the race for dominance in the global gaming and hospitality market is far from over.

Elon Musk and Sam Altman’s Courtroom Drama: What We Learned

A US jury has ruled in favor of Sam Altman and OpenAI in their lawsuit with Elon Musk, clearing the…
The Verdict and Its Implications A federal jury in Oakland, California, has handed a resounding victory to Sam Altman and OpenAI in their long-standing courtroom battle with Elon Musk. The unanimous verdict, delivered after less than two hours of deliberation, found Altman, OpenAI, and its president, Greg Brockman, not liable for Musk's claims that they unjustly enriched themselves and broke a founding contract made with Musk when founding the startup. The Impact on OpenAI's Future Plans The jury's decision provides OpenAI with a stamp of approval for its for-profit plans, already in motion, and a clear path ahead to go public later this year at around a $1tn valuation. Musk's demands that Altman be removed as CEO and that the for-profit arm of the company transfer about $150bn to the nonprofit arm would have jeopardized the blockbuster initial public offering. The Data Analysis The ruling is likely to reassure investors and the broader AI sector because it avoids a potentially chaotic outcome that could have challenged OpenAI's commercial structure, Microsoft partnership, and future fundraising plans. According to Sarah Kreps, a professor and director of the Tech Policy Institute at Cornell University, purely nonprofit models are difficult to sustain at the cutting edge of AI development. The Impact Analysis The trial highlighted a broader disconnect between the people building AI systems and many of the people increasingly expected to live and work alongside them. The decision also leaves many questions unresolved, such as how these systems should be governed, who benefits from them economically, and whether the pace of deployment is becoming disconnected from broader public comfort with the technology. The Prediction OpenAI's plans now seem all but guaranteed, given that the world's richest person couldn't put a stop to them. Wall Street is likely breathing a sigh of relief. However, Musk's lawyers said he would appeal the case, and critics argue that the trial's outcome does not necessarily equate to justice or accountability for the people of California.

Israel Kills 12 Palestinians in Gaza Amidst Failed Ceasefire

Israeli forces killed 12 Palestinians in Gaza despite a ceasefire agreement, continuing a pattern o…
The Lead: Continuing Violence Despite Ceasefire Israeli forces have killed at least 12 Palestinians in attacks throughout Gaza, continuing a pattern of violence that persists despite a ceasefire agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump in October 2023. The latest attacks, including a strike on a police vehicle in Khan Younis that killed eight people including three civilians, demonstrate how the truce has failed to protect Palestinian lives in the enclave. Targeting Security Forces: Systematic Violations of Truce The attacks specifically targeted Palestinian police forces working to restore security in civilian areas. In Khan Younis, an Israeli strike killed eight people, including three civilian bystanders, after security forces intervened to break up a fight. A separate attack in Gaza City killed two police officers, while another bombing in Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza claimed two more lives. Gaza's Ministry of Interior condemned the attacks, stating that "the continued silence of international organisations regarding the targeting of civilian police officers constitutes complicity with the Israeli occupation." The ministry emphasized that "there is absolutely no justification for targeting it or killing its personnel," noting that police provide essential services across various aspects of daily life in the Gaza Strip. Casualty Crisis: Humanitarian Impact of Ongoing Conflict Since the ceasefire was announced in October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed at least 984 people and injured 2,235 others in Gaza. The overall death toll from the conflict has surpassed 72,500, with more than 172,000 others injured. Thousands of missing people are believed to be dead and buried under the destroyed buildings. The number of confirmed casualties represents more than 7 percent of Gaza's population of two million people. The Israeli assault has also turned most of the enclave's structures into piles of rubble, creating what rights groups and UN investigators have concluded amounts to genocide: "an effort to destroy the Palestinian people." Geopolitical Implications: Failed Diplomacy and Regional Instability The continued Israeli attacks occur while the country simultaneously violates a separate truce with Hezbollah by attacking south Lebanon. Under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right government, Israel maintains occupation of most of Gaza while reconstruction in the territory has not begun. Hamas characterized the deadly attacks as part of the Israeli government's "unprecedented bloody, fascist approach," stating that "this escalation represents a clear failure of the role of the mediators and guarantors [of the ceasefire] and the international community to quell the barbaric Zionist killing machine." The Trump administration's 12-point plan for the truce has struggled for implementation. In February, Trump convened his "Board of Peace" to govern Gaza through a council of Palestinian technocrats, but it remains unclear when or how these forces will take over government agencies in the territory. Future Outlook: International Response and Path Forward The persistent violence despite international mediation suggests that the current diplomatic framework is insufficient to protect Palestinian lives and establish lasting peace. The international community faces increasing pressure to take more decisive action to enforce the ceasefire terms and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Without meaningful intervention, the cycle of violence is likely to continue, with potentially devastating consequences for regional stability. The failure to implement reconstruction plans and establish international security forces in Gaza indicates that the underlying political tensions remain unresolved, setting the stage for further conflict in the coming months.
