Muscle Growth Drug Could Prevent Lean Tissue Loss with Weight Loss Injections

A new study shows that apitegromab, a muscle growth drug, can significantly reduce the loss of lean…
The Lead: Muscle Growth Drug Could Reduce Lean Tissue Loss with Weight Loss InjectionsA drug that promotes muscle growth could significantly reduce the loss of lean body mass when using slimming jabs, research suggests. While GLP-1 based jabs such as Wegovy and Mounjaro have proved highly effective at helping people who are overweight or obese, experts have warned it is not only fat that is lost.Breakthrough in Combining Muscle Preservation with Weight LossStudies suggest 25-40% of total weight loss from GLP-1 drugs is due to a reduction in lean body mass – non-fat components of the body, including muscle. The authors of the study said this mattered because lean body mass was important for physical strength and overall health. It burns more calories than fat tissue and is linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Now a small trial has suggested the use of a monoclonal antibody called apitegromab can help retain lean body mass when losing weight with tirzepatide – the drug found in Mounjaro. Apitegromab works by blocking myostatin, a protein involved in inhibiting muscle growth.Clinical Trial Results Show Significant Muscle RetentionWriting in the journal Nature Medicine, researchers in the US reported how they randomly divided 102 participants into two groups, with 51 given apitegromab alongside tirzepatide, and the other 51 given a placebo with tirzepatide. The trial, which was funded by the apitegromab producer Scholar Rock, revealed after 24 weeks that total weight loss was similar for the two groups. However, participants given apitegromab alongside tirzepatide lost on average 1.6kg (3.5lb) of lean mass (corresponding to 14.6% of total weight loss) while those given apitegromab alongside a placebo lost on average 3.5kg of lean mass. In other words, the use of apitegromab was associated with a 55% greater retention of lean mass relative to placebo. The team added that the number of people experiencing side-effects were similar between the two groups, with most deemed to be mild. However, the study has limitations, including that most participants were women and the study was small and short in duration.Addressing a Critical Limitation of Current Weight Loss TreatmentsProf Alexander Miras, an obesity expert at Ulster University who was not involved in the work, described the findings as very important, noting that while GLP-1s had been associated with improved 'functionality' – meaning it was easier to carry out everyday activities – they had also been associated with a loss in muscle mass and strength.'This means that [people] may be less able to lift heavy weights, for example, or walk up a hill,' Miras said. 'This new medication may help reduce the effects of GLP-1-based drugs on muscle strength and therefore improve functionality even further compared to someone not on the new medication who is just taking tirzepatide.'Prof Naveed Sattar, a cardiometabolic medicine expert at the University of Glasgow, said far larger-scale and longer trials were now needed, not least to check safety.'This is an early-stage trial that suggests novel drugs can help mitigate muscle mass loss with prescribed tirzepatide. However, it's too early to say whether this actually benefits peoples health or ability to move or function better,' he said.Future Directions for Weight Loss Therapies'In the meantime, people prescribed these drugs should be supported to increase their physical activity, as this can help maintain muscle mass in a physiological way. Importantly, activity should also be framed as something enjoyable and sustainable, rather than purely as a medical add-on,' Sattar added.

Transgender Darts Star Noa‑Lynn van Leuven Barred from Women‑Only PDC Events After DRA Ruling

The Darts Regulation Authority has prohibited transgender player Noa‑Lynn van Leuven from all PDC w…
The Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) announced that Noa‑Lynn van Leuven is barred from competing in any Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) women‑only events with immediate effect, after the governing body ruled that only biological females may participate in women’s tournaments.Under the new policy, van Leuven – a 29‑year‑old who has claimed six titles in the PDC Women’s Series – will be ineligible for the series and the Women’s World Matchplay, a competition she was on track to qualify for this summer. The DRA justified the decision by referencing a report commissioned from Dr Emma Hilton, a developmental biologist who has published extensively on sex categories in sport. The study concluded that darts is a "gender‑affected sport" and identified several physical differences that give males an advantage, including greater height, longer limbs, broader shoulders, increased muscle mass and stiffer tendons. These attributes, the report argued, enhance reach, stability and throwing mechanics, thereby influencing consistency and precision. This ruling arrives shortly after the International Olympic Committee announced a ban on transgender women from female Olympic events, set to take effect at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.Van Leuven responded on Instagram, describing the decision as a forced retirement. She wrote, "I just got an email… apparently I’m retired, not by choice, but because I am no longer allowed to compete." She added, "This isn’t just about me; it’s another huge hit for the trans community. Every day it is getting harder for trans people just to exist, to compete. If you think this stops with me, it doesn’t. We just want to be."While barred from women‑only events, van Leuven could still aim for the open professional tour, which is gender‑neutral. Currently, Beau Greaves is the sole female player on the tour, and former women’s world champion Lisa Ashton held a two‑year tour card in 2020‑2021.

Ecuador-Colombia Diplomatic Row Escalates Over Jorge Glas Comments

Ecuador has recalled its ambassador from Colombia amid a diplomatic row over comments on the case o…
Ecuador has escalated tensions with Colombia by recalling its ambassador, Arturo Felix Wong, from Bogota. This move comes in response to criticisms from Colombian President Gustavo Petro regarding the case of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, who is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence for corruption.Glas, a left-wing figure, has been at the center of a high-profile criminal case that has stirred tensions across Latin America. He was arrested in a controversial police raid on the Mexican embassy in Quito two years ago, where he had sought asylum. The raid was authorized by the right-wing government of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, who has denounced criticisms of the Glas case as a violation of his country's sovereignty.President Petro has referred to Glas as a 'political prisoner' and has called for his transfer to Colombian custody after granting him citizenship last September. Petro has also raised concerns about Glas's health and wellbeing, stating that he is suffering from severe malnutrition and muscle mass loss due to his imprisonment. The diplomatic row between Ecuador and Colombia is part of a long-running spat between the two leaders. Since March, Noboa has imposed 50-percent tariffs on Colombian imports, accusing Colombia of being too lax in its fight against drug trafficking. Petro, in turn, has accused Noboa of carrying out a bombing campaign near the Colombian border, resulting in the recovery of 27 charred bodies.Ecuador's Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, confirmed the recall of the ambassador, stating that the criticisms of the Glas case were 'uncalled for and a provocation'. The move is seen as a further escalation of tensions between the two countries, which have been experiencing strained relations since the Mexican embassy raid in 2024.

Robert F Kennedy Jr's Peptide Plan: A Threat to Public Health Policy

Robert F Kennedy Jr's 'Make America Healthy Again' agenda includes plans to open up the sale of inj…
Robert F Kennedy Jr, the US health secretary, has unveiled a chaotic and unpredictable agenda for public health policy under his 'Make America Healthy Again' (Maha) initiative. His approach tends to favor personal choice and autonomy over large-scale, mandatory public health interventions, such as childhood vaccine requirements. The Maha agenda has raised concerns over the potential risks associated with injectable peptide drugs. Mr. Kennedy plans to open up the sale of 'about 14' of these drugs to the public, despite the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) restricting 17 peptides in 2023 due to 'potential significant safety risks'. None of these peptides have been proven to be safe or effective for human use.The peptides in question are often promoted for biological enhancement, such as increasing muscle mass or cognitive benefits, but the evidence for these effects in humans is thin. Reports of people self-administering peptide therapies, usually bought from China 'for research use only', are widespread, particularly in Silicon Valley. The Maha project wants to make the grey market the only market, effectively sanctioning mass public use of unproven treatments. Peptides are clearly drugs and shouldn’t be allowed for widespread use without rigorous clinical trials. Opening loopholes for sale would undermine the precautionary principle that has successfully led public health policy for generations. It is also worth noting that other governments are unlikely to be as cavalier as Mr. Kennedy about peptides. However, people everywhere will continue to call for more personal choice and more bodily autonomy, and those conversations are important. The case for safety, proof, and regulation must be made to ensure that public health policy prioritizes the well-being of individuals.
