UN Adds Israel to Blacklist for Conflict-Related Sexual Violence

The United Nations has added Israel to a blacklist of countries and entities accused of using sexua…
The Lead The United Nations has added Israel to a blacklist of countries and entities accused of using sexual violence as a weapon of war, prompting Israel to cut ties with UN chief Antonio Guterres. Israel's Response to the UN's Decision Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, denounced the decision, saying, 'The decision to blacklist Israel and accuse us of using sexual violence as a weapon of war is an outrageous decision.' Danon added that Israel will have no contact with Guterres's office as long as he serves as head of the organisation. The Allegations Against Israel The UN's decision is based on allegations of sexual violence committed by Israeli security forces against Palestinian detainees in prisons and detention centers. The UN has cited 'credible information' regarding these allegations, which include torture and sexual violence. The Impact on Israel-Palestine Relations The move has further strained relations between Israel and the UN, which have been fraught since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack that preceded Israel's war on Gaza. Israeli authorities have criticized Guterres and other UN officials for their condemnation of its conduct in Gaza. The Future Outlook The addition of Israel to the blacklist is likely to have significant implications for Israel's international reputation and its relations with the UN. It may also lead to increased scrutiny of Israel's actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

EU Trade War: Commissioners Meet to Tackle 'China Shock 2.0'

Facing a surge of cheap Chinese imports dubbed 'China Shock 2.0,' EU commissioners are convening to…
The EU's Strategic Pivot on ChinaEU commissioners are convening this Friday for high-stakes talks aimed at imposing new restrictions on imports from China. The meeting is driven by growing concern that Beijing's industrial overproduction is fueling conditions for US-style rust belt towns across Europe, effectively creating a 'China Shock 2.0' that mirrors the economic disruption seen in the US a quarter-century ago. Addressing 'China Shock 2.0'The scope of the crisis is unprecedented, with commissioners from all 27 member states reviewing portfolios ranging from trade and agriculture to defense, health, and digital initiatives. While no final decisions are expected on Friday, the gathering serves as a critical alignment exercise to address the systemic overproduction in China that is flooding the European market. The Economics of ProtectionismThe core issue driving these talks is the severe price disparity between local and imported goods. Sources indicate that Chinese imports are entering the EU at a cost sometimes up to 40% cheaper than locally produced alternatives. This price gap is forcing EU factories to cannibalize their own domestic market, a trend industry leaders warned earlier this month would undermine European manufacturing. Defensive Measures and Future LegislationTo counter this economic pressure, the EU is exploring a range of protective tools. Experts suggest that quotas and tariff rate quotas could be introduced as faster alternatives to traditional tariffs, specifically targeting sectors like hybrid cars and chemical components. Additionally, the EU is considering utilizing its never-before-used anti-coercion instrument and legislation such as the cybersecurity act 2.0 to block the procurement of specific Chinese products. A Calculated Response to BeijingLooking ahead, the EU faces a delicate balancing act. While experts like Ignacio García Bercero argue the bloc must show it is prepared to act tough, they also emphasize the necessity of maintaining engagement with China to ensure mutual respect. With China viewing market access to the EU as existential, analysts predict Beijing will fight back hard against any restrictions, potentially leading to retaliatory measures that the EU must be prepared to weather.

Neymar Ruled Out of Brazil's World Cup Opener with Calf Injury

Brazilian star Neymar has been ruled out of the national team's upcoming friendlies and their World…
The Lead: Neymar's World Cup Dreams DashedBrazilian football superstar Neymar has been ruled out of the national team's upcoming friendlies and their crucial World Cup opener after scans revealed a grade-two calf injury, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has confirmed. The setback is a significant blow to Brazil's hopes in the upcoming tournament, as the 34-year-old forward faces two to three weeks on the sidelines. The Injury Details: Diagnosis and Recovery TimelineCBF doctor Rodrigo Lasmar delivered the news on Thursday, revealing that Neymar underwent medical tests including an MRI scan which showed a grade-two calf strain—more severe than initially thought. This moderate injury involves a partial tear of the muscle fibers that requires rest and rehabilitation. The diagnosis differs from that presented by Santos prior to the squad announcement, with the club's doctor stating the problem was merely swelling. Neymar will miss Sunday's friendly against Panama at the Maracana and the subsequent match against Egypt in Cleveland. The Team Impact Analysis: Brazil Adjusts Without Key PlayersThe absence of Neymar compounds Brazil's existing injury concerns. Manager Carlo Ancelotti is already without defenders Gabriel Magalhaes and Marquinhos, as well as forward Gabriel Martinelli for Sunday's fixture due to their involvement in this weekend's Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain. Neymar's recall had generated widespread excitement after not featuring in Ancelotti's plans during the Italian's year in charge. The forward, who has scored 79 goals in 128 international appearances, has endured years of injury troubles and an underwhelming return to Santos. The Tournament Outlook: Brazil's Path ForwardWith Neymar all but ruled out of Brazil's World Cup opener against African champions Morocco on June 13 in New Jersey, the five-time world champions must quickly regroup. Brazil are in Group C alongside Haiti and Scotland. Ancelotti had previously stated that Neymar would receive no special treatment, and that his place in the squad would be strictly based on fitness and form, not sentiment. For now, Brazil must plan without their star player as they prepare for their World Cup campaign.

Anthropic's Lease with SpaceX: A Matter of Duration

A dispute has emerged over the duration of Anthropic's lease with SpaceX, with Elon Musk stating it…
The Lease Duration Dispute A controversy has arisen regarding the length of Anthropic's lease with SpaceX, a deal that involves billions of dollars a month for exclusive use of Anthropic's Colossus cluster. Elon Musk claimed on X that the lease is for 180 days with a 90-day notice for mutual cancellation, while SpaceX's recent S-1 filing presents the deal as a three-year agreement. The Details of the Deal According to Musk, the short-term lease was SpaceX's request, not Anthropic's. He stated that SpaceX won't leave Anthropic hanging and will provide a reasonable off-ramp, but might need the compute capacity back if it gets super tight. On the other hand, SpaceX's S-1 filing confirms a 90-day cancellation notice but describes the agreement as lasting through May 2029, with a monthly fee. The Data Analysis The deal involves a significant monthly fee of $1.25 billion, as mentioned in the S-1 filing. This substantial commitment highlights the importance of the compute capacity for both parties. The Impact Analysis The discrepancy between Musk's statement and SpaceX's filing raises questions about the accuracy of the information provided. This situation could be seen as a material misrepresentation made while marketing a security, which could have implications for investors and the companies involved. The Prediction The future of the lease and the relationship between Anthropic and SpaceX will depend on how this situation unfolds. With the SEC possibly involved, the companies will need to clarify the terms of the agreement to avoid any further controversy.

Sesame: From Oculus Founders to Conversational AI Agents on iOS

Sesame, a conversational AI startup founded by Oculus founders, has launched its iOS app featuring …
The Launch of Sesame's Conversational AI On Thursday, the AI startup Sesame, co-founded by Oculus' founders and others from the VR company that sold to Meta, released a public preview of the conversational AI agents it's been developing for over a year. With its new iOS app, Sesame is rethinking the traditional AI chatbot experience popularized by apps like ChatGPT, creating one where conversation flows, even if the AI needs time to think. Reimagining AI Conversation Flow As the company explains in its launch announcement, "There's an inherent tension between replying quickly and taking the time to compose thoughtful responses. A slower response is usually more correct, but it can also feel unnatural if it takes too long." To address this challenge, Sesame claims to have built fast search and retrieval systems, so the AI can have up-to-date information, as well as technology that allows it to run multiple parallel searches while speaking, weaving those results into its responses as it talks. That means the AI will talk more like a human, even pivoting mid-sentence if need be, as it taps into newer information — as a human might when remembering another key fact or point they want to add. User Growth and Development Milestones The app offers four distinct AI agents called Maya, Miles, Simone, and Charlie, each of which have their own distinct voice, personality, point of view, and memory. Maya and Miles were previously available in Sesame's Research Preview of its technology, where they were soon accessed by over one million people within the first few weeks, said Sesame investor Sequoia at the time. (The company had then just raised its $250 million Series B from Sequoia and others and was opening up a beta.) During the beta, Sesame learned from user feedback and rolled out features such as search cards with image results for visualizing concepts, notes for capturing takeaways, a texting mode for those times when speaking aloud is not an option, and support for deep dives where you can get more in-depth results. There's also a new incognito mode for private conversations, which allows the agents access to prior context but saves nothing to memory. Transforming the AI Landscape The app, however, is only the first step toward Sesame's bigger plans for AI involving intelligent eyewear, which the team expects to launch in 2027. Before that, the agents will also learn to do more than just think with you, Sesame hints, suggesting they'll later be able to take action on your behalf — hence why they're called "agents" in the first place, instead of just chatbots. That is potentially even more interesting, as working with agentic tools or apps today requires being able to prompt for what you need and have a specific idea of what you want to happen, and sometimes, even how it should happen. A conversational agent that you could talk to naturally could help you take the next steps, without you having to perfect the command you're giving it. The Road to AI-Powered Eyewear The iOS app is out today in 39 countries, and the full experience is free for the time being. However, there still may be a short waitlist at sign-up. An Android preview is coming in the future, the company says.

Yemen's former leader Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi dies in exile at 80

Death of Yemen's Exiled Leader Marks End of an EraYemen's former president Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who fled house arrest by Houthi rebels and spent his final years in exile in Saudi Arabia, has died at age 80. Yemen's presidency confirmed the death, with state-run Yemeni TV reporting that Hadi died at his residence in Riyadh on Thursday.Former President's Life in ExileHadi was the internationally recognized president of Yemen who led a fractured government mostly from exile for eight years as the country descended into civil war and famine before stepping down in 2022. He fled to Saudi Arabia in 2015 as war erupted between the Iran-backed Houthis, who had forced the government from the capital Sanaa, and a Saudi-led coalition. The government announced three days of mourning, during which flags will be flown at half-staff. Hadi is survived by his wife, Hala, and six children.Human Cost of Yemen's ConflictAlthough a UN-brokered ceasefire is largely holding, the war has killed hundreds of thousands of people through direct and indirect causes. Last year, 19.5 million people needed aid, the United Nations reported. Yemen remains divided between the Houthi-controlled north and the government-run south, which includes a patchwork of factions.Political Vacuum in Divided YemenRashad al-Alimi, the head of the Presidential Leadership Council – the leadership body of Yemen's internationally recognized government – said Hadi believed in the Yemeni people's "right to a just state, freedom and human dignity." "He led the battle to defend the republican system," al-Alimi said on social media.Hadi took office in 2012 after a long stint as vice president to Ali Abdullah Saleh, who reluctantly ended his 33 years in power during Arab Spring protests. He handed over his powers – reportedly under Saudi pressure – to the newly formed Presidential Leadership Council in April 2022.Uncertain Path for Peace in YemenHadi, a career military officer, was waved through as the sole candidate in an election in which he won 99.8 percent of the vote. His presidency was thwarted with spells of unrest, with his opponents accusing him of favoring the country's eastern oil-rich provinces at the expense of the mountainous heartlands dominated by Houthis. After the Houthis overran the capital in 2014, they placed Hadi under house arrest in early 2015 before he escaped in February of that year.
