Ex-NBA Player Damon Jones to Plead Guilty in Landmark US Gambling Case

Former NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones is set to become the first person to plead guilty…
Former NBA player and assistant coach Damon Jones is expected to plead guilty in a landmark US gambling case, marking a significant development in a sweeping investigation that has led to the arrests of over 30 individuals, including reputed mobsters and other basketball figures.A change-of-plea hearing for Jones is scheduled for April 28 in Brooklyn federal court. He faces charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money-laundering conspiracy related to two separate indictments. The first indictment accuses him of profiting from rigged poker games, while the second charges him with providing sports bettors with non-public information about injuries to NBA stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.Jones, 49, had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was arrested last October alongside Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, among others. According to prosecutors, Jones sold or attempted to sell non-public information to bettors, including a tip that James was injured and wouldn’t play in a February 9, 2023, game against the Milwaukee Bucks. He also allegedly received $2,500 for a tip that Davis would see limited playing time against the Oklahoma City Thunder. In the poker scheme, Jones was among former NBA players used to lure unwitting players into rigged poker games. He was paid $2,500 for a game in the Hamptons where he was instructed to cheat. The poker scheme often made use of illegal poker games run by New York crime families that required them to share a portion of their proceeds with the Gambino, Genovese, and Bonnano crime families.Jones, who earned more than $20m playing for 10 teams in 11 seasons from 1999 to 2009, is a native of Galveston, Texas. He played alongside James in Cleveland from 2005 to 2008 and served as an unofficial assistant coach for James’s Los Angeles Lakers during the 2022-2023 season.

Australian Refinery Fire Heightens Fuel Supply Concerns Amid Iran Conflict Shortages

A blaze at a major Australian refinery has intensified worries over fuel availability, compounding …
A fire erupted at one of Australia’s most important oil refineries, prompting authorities to assess the impact on the nation’s fuel supply chain. The incident comes at a time when regional fuel markets are already under pressure due to shortages linked to the Iran war, raising the risk of tighter gasoline and diesel availability for consumers and businesses.Officials have mobilised emergency response teams to contain the blaze and evaluate damage to processing units. While the refinery’s full operational status remains uncertain, preliminary reports suggest that production could be curtailed for several days, potentially affecting export volumes and domestic distribution.Energy analysts warn that any prolonged disruption could push fuel prices higher across Australian markets, especially as the country already faces import constraints from the broader geopolitical tension surrounding Iran. The incident underscores the fragility of supply chains that rely on a limited number of large‑scale facilities.Stakeholders are monitoring the situation closely, with the government urging consumers to practice fuel‑saving measures while the refinery works to restore normal operations.

Piteå IF Struggle to Survive in Swedish Women's Football

Piteå IF, a top-division side in Sweden's Damallsvenskan, faces significant financial challenges du…
Piteå IF, a team in Sweden's top women's football division, Damallsvenskan, is struggling to stay competitive due to its remote location in northern Sweden. The club is entering its 17th season as a top-division side, but faces significant challenges, including high travel costs to away games. The club's managing director, Emelie Lövgren, notes that 13 of the 14 teams in the league are based in the south of Sweden, making travel a major expense. A trip to the southernmost city, Malmö, is 908 miles one-way, while even a trip to Uppsala costs around £8,000 (95,000KR) per season.Lövgren emphasizes that the club is prioritizing cost-cutting over performance, which she describes as the 'saddest part.' The club has sold several key players, including goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy to Bristol City, to balance its finances. Wages are increasing by 15-20% annually, making it difficult for Piteå IF to keep up.The club's sporting director, James Burgin, notes that it's a 'complete catch-22' to attract and retain players in the squad. The club is exploring solutions, including external investment and raising awareness about the struggles faced by northern teams.Lövgren concludes that change needs to come centrally to support northern teams and ensure the long-term viability of women's football in the region.

Ollie Watkins' 100th Goal Sends Aston Villa into Europa League Semi-Final and Fuels Champions League Push

Ollie Watkins celebrated his 100th club goal as Aston Villa secured a comfortable aggregate win ove…
Ollie Watkins opened the scoring in the 16th minute, marking his 100th goal for Aston Villa and giving Unai Emery’s side a decisive edge in the Europa League quarter‑final second leg against Bologna. The England striker, still hoping for a late recall to Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad, added to a first‑leg 3‑1 advantage that had already put Villa in a strong position. Goals from Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers – the latter converting after a missed penalty – extended the lead, while Ezri Konsa capped the aggregate triumph with a late volley after a corner from Tammy Abraham.Villa’s 6‑1 aggregate victory sets up an all‑English semi‑final against Nottingham Forest, while the club also prepares for a crucial Premier League clash with Sunderland as they chase a top‑five finish.Emery, who is chasing his fifth Europa League title, fielded an unchanged XI – a first in his tenure – and maintained an unbeaten European record when John McGinn and Youri Tielemans start. The 4‑4‑2 formation saw Rogers drop deep to link play, delivering a low cross that Watkins turned into his simplest strike of the season.Watkins’ goal was his fifth in seven games and a club‑record 10th in European competition, underscoring his resurgence after being omitted from the England squad. He hinted that a strong showing could bolster his case as a potential deputy for Harry Kane.Villa’s dominance at home in Europe is evident – they have won 15 of their last 17 major continental matches. Financially, the club reported a modest £9.5 million loss for the year ending June 2025, making a swift return to the Champions League both a sporting and economic priority.Emery’s ambition remains clear: while the Europa League trophy is within reach, the ultimate goal is to lift the Champions League and secure the club’s future. As he wrote in his programme notes, “All of you fully deserve to have your team showing up when the best teams are still competing.”

Palestinian Football Officials Denied Canadian Visas Ahead of FIFA World Cup Meeting

Three officials from the Palestine Football Association have been denied entry to Canada for a pre-…
Officials from the Palestine Football Association have been denied entry to Canada ahead of a crucial FIFA meeting in Vancouver. The Palestine Football Association had requested FIFA to intervene with Canadian immigration authorities on their behalf. The annual FIFA Congress is set to take place in Vancouver on April 30, serving as an unofficial kickoff to the World Cup, which begins on June 11 in Mexico City. The Palestinian officials had hoped to address the issue of Israeli football clubs playing competitive matches in what the PFA argues is occupied Palestinian territory in the West Bank.Following a submission by the PFA to Congress in 2024 on the issue, FIFA undertook to investigate claims of illegal matches in the occupied territories. However, the report published in March saw FIFA rule it would 'take no action' over the claims. The Palestine Football Association president, Jibril Rajoub, is understood to be one of the three individuals denied a Canadian visa, alongside the PFA's general secretary and head of legal affairs. The decision to deny the officials visas comes amid general concern over access to the World Cup, with travel bans already in place in the United States, affecting Haiti, Iran, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has stated that there will be no adverse effects on travel for teams or supporters at the tournament.

Arsenal's Declan Rice Urges Team to Elevate Performance for Premier League Title Showdown Against Manchester City

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice emphasizes the need for improvement in their upcoming Premier League…
Arsenal's Premier League title hopes hang in the balance as they prepare to face Manchester City on Sunday. Midfielder Declan Rice has urged his team to elevate their performance, acknowledging that their recent form has been a concern.Rice, 27, highlighted the team's inconsistent style of play, which has drawn criticism from fans. Despite being six points clear of City at the top of the table, Rice emphasized that Arsenal must improve if they are to press their title claims. The midfielder reflected on a rollercoaster few weeks for Arsenal, including a Carabao Cup final defeat against City and a sobering home loss to Bournemouth in the league. However, they have also shown resilience, progressing to the Champions League semi-finals with a 0-0 draw against Sporting.Rice stressed the importance of performing better, particularly in terms of possession and confidence on the ball. He acknowledged that the team's recent errors have been costly, but they managed to rectify this against Sporting.“It's about doing the basics a little bit better, to a better level … just the five-, 10-yard passes that we're giving away a bit sloppily,” Rice said. “And just that confidence with the ball, just taking more touches, relaxing on the ball, not feeling under pressure.”Rice also expressed his desire for revenge against City, citing the pain of watching them lift the Carabao Cup trophy. He emphasized that the upcoming match is a significant test, but one that Arsenal is ready for.“To go there and win would be a massive statement,” Rice said. “And look, these boys are ready. We spoke as a group. We know what's required.”Arsenal have struggled to score in recent games, managing only three goals in their last five matches. Rice attributed this to the defensive strategies employed by opposing teams, particularly the low blocks they have faced.Despite these challenges, Rice remains committed to contributing to the team, having overcome illness to play against Sporting. He emphasized the importance of availability and depth, particularly with key players like Martin Ødegaard and Bukayo Saka sidelined through injury.

US Jury Rules Against Ticketmaster and Live Nation in Antitrust Case

A US jury has found that Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation had a harmful monopoly ove…
A New York jury has ruled against Ticketmaster and Live Nation, finding that the concert giant and its subsidiary had a harmful monopoly over big concert venues. The verdict is a significant loss for the companies, which were sued by dozens of states in the US over claims of anticompetitive practices. The jury deliberated for four days before reaching its decision, which could cost Live Nation and Ticketmaster hundreds of millions of dollars. The companies were found to have overcharged consumers in 22 states by $1.72 per ticket. The verdict also opens the door for potential penalties and sanctions, including court orders to divest some entities, such as venues. The civil case, initially led by the US federal government, accused Live Nation of using its reach to smother competition by blocking venues from using multiple ticket sellers. The company's lawyers argued that it is not a monopoly, saying that artists, sports teams, and venues decide prices and ticketing practices.Live Nation Entertainment owns, operates, controls booking for, or has an equity interest in hundreds of venues. Its subsidiary Ticketmaster is widely considered to be the world's largest ticket-seller for live events, controlling 86 percent of the market for concerts and 73 percent of the overall market when sporting events are included. The verdict marks a significant victory for fans and some artists who have long complained about Ticketmaster's high fees and limited competition. The company has faced criticism from artists such as Pearl Jam, which battled the business in the 1990s and filed an antimonopoly complaint with the US Department of Justice.
