Russian Drone Onslaught Kills Five, Damages Odesa Ship Amid Intensified Conflict

Russian drone and artillery strikes across five Ukrainian regions killed at least five civilians an…
Escalating Drone Barrages Across Multiple Ukrainian RegionsOn Saturday and Sunday, Russian forces launched a coordinated series of drone and artillery strikes in the Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Zaporizhia and Odesa regions, killing at least five civilians and damaging a civilian vessel flying the flag of Palau while it was loading in the Odesa port.Sumy: 2 civilians killed in Bilopil.Dnipropetrovsk: 1 dead, 4 injured.Kherson: 7 injured.Zaporizhia: 2 dead, 4 injured across 50 settlements.Odesa: Port infrastructure and a Palau‑flagged ship damaged.Casualties and Drone Losses: The Numbers Behind the AssaultUkrainian air defenses reported shooting down or disabling 124 of 144 Russian drones overnight, while Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed to have destroyed 203 Ukrainian drones over its own territory in the same period. The combined drone activity spanned 11 locations in Ukraine and multiple sites in Russia, including Vologda and Sevastopol.Strategic Implications for Ukraine’s Port Infrastructure and Regional SecurityThe damage to Odesa’s logistics facilities—warehouses, cargo tanks and administrative buildings—poses a short‑term risk to Ukraine’s export capacity, especially grain shipments that are critical for global food markets. Repeated attacks on transport corridors also strain civilian mobility and could pressure neighboring states to reassess their support logistics. What the Next Week May Hold for the Conflict FrontlinesUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signaled openness to diplomatic talks in Azerbaijan, while simultaneously seeking to bolster air‑defence capabilities. If drone interception rates remain high, Russia may shift to heavier artillery or missile strikes, potentially escalating civilian casualties. Observers expect a continued cycle of retaliatory strikes and diplomatic overtures, with the Odesa port remaining a focal point.

The Minnesota Timberwolves took a 3-1 series lead over the Denver Nuggets in their Western Conferen…
The Lead: Timberwolves Take 3-1 Lead Despite Key InjuriesAyo Dosunmu came off the bench to score a career-high 43 points on 13-for-17 shooting, and the short-handed Minnesota Timberwolves pulled away for a 112-96 win over the Denver Nuggets in Game 4 of their Western Conference quarterfinals series on Saturday night in Minneapolis. The Game Breakdown: Edwards' Injury Changes Playoff TrajectoryThe victory, which gave Minnesota a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, came at a steep cost for the Timberwolves, who lost two key starters due to injury. Anthony Edwards, a four-time All-Star and the team's top scorer, left in the second quarter and did not return because of a left knee injury. Earlier, in the first half, Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo injured his right leg on a noncontact play. Early reports indicated he might have ruptured his Achilles tendon.Statistical Impact: Dosunmu's Career Night Powers VictoryNaz Reid added 17 points off the bench for Minnesota. Julius Randle finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, and Rudy Gobert grabbed a game-high-tying 15 rebounds to go along with four points. Jamal Murray scored 30 points on 10-for-25 shooting to lead Denver. Nikola Jokic finished with 24 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists. However, he shot 8-for-22 from the field and missed all three of his 3-point attempts.League-Wide Implications: Thunder Dominate, Knicks Even SeriesShai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a playoff-career-high 42 points to lift Oklahoma City to a road win over Phoenix. The reigning NBA Most Valuable Player finished 15 of 18 from the floor with eight assists to give the Thunder a commanding 3-0 lead in their first-round Western Conference playoff series. Oklahoma City have won 11 consecutive first-round games. In the Eastern Conference, Karl Anthony-Towns totalled 20 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds for his first career playoff triple-double as New York earned a victory over host Atlanta and evened their Eastern Conference first-round series at two games apiece.Playoff Outlook: Timberwolves Face Uncertain FutureWith Anthony Edwards' knee injury and Donte DiVincenzo potentially suffering an Achilles rupture, the Timberwolves' path to the NBA Finals becomes significantly more complicated. Minnesota will need to rely even more heavily on their bench production, led by Dosunmu's career performance, to close out the series against the Nuggets. The team's medical staff will be working overtime to determine the severity of both injuries before Game 5.

Leeds Seek FA Cup Glory Against Chelsea in Wembley Showdown

Leeds United faces Chelsea in a pivotal FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, seeking to overcome past hear…
The Wembley Opportunity: Leeds' FA Cup Semi-Final Against ChelseaLeeds United supporters will experience a mix of excitement and trepidation as they descend on Wembley for their FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Sunday. The venue evokes painful memories, with Leeds having lost on their past three visits, yet it now represents a potential springboard to a brighter future for the club. From Heartbreak to Hope: Leeds' Journey to the Semi-FinalsWembley has primarily been associated with heartbreak for Leeds, with their most recent trip ending in a 1-0 defeat by Southampton in the 2024 Championship playoff final. That defeat, however, proved to be a crucial moment for the club's development. Despite failing to secure promotion, Leeds held their nerve with manager Daniel Farke, who delivered the Championship title the following season with 100 points. This season, Leeds already have 40 points in the Premier League and are practically safe, heading to Wembley in buoyant mood with FA Cup glory in their sights.Historic Stakes: Leeds' First FA Cup Semi-Final in 37 YearsThe showdown with Chelsea marks Leeds' first FA Cup semi-final since 1987, a significant milestone for the club. For Farke, this represents a seminal moment in his managerial tenure, as he could become only the second manager in Leeds' history to guide them to an FA Cup final. The previous manager to achieve this feat was Don Revie, who faced Chelsea in 1970, followed by appearances in 1972 and 1973. This occasion, however, carries even greater significance as victory could accelerate plans to return this grand old club to the upper echelons of English football.Building for the Future: Farke's Vision Beyond the PitchFarke has demonstrated a commitment to building sustainable success at Leeds, focusing not just on immediate results but on long-term development. Upon arriving, he was shocked by the state of Leeds' Thorp Arch training ground, describing it as 'League One level' despite the club's ambitions. He has since advocated for investment in infrastructure, stating: 'I need to win the next game but I want to build something. Perhaps I am not there in five or 10 years, but this is what I want to do.' This approach has been complemented by plans to expand Elland Road, signaling a comprehensive modernization of the club's facilities. The Path to Glory: What Victory Could Mean for LeedsA victory over a Chelsea side reeling from managerial changes would establish Farke and his players as Leeds legends. Beyond the immediate prestige, such success would return Leeds to European competition for the first time since the early 2000s and provide significant financial resources to continue the club's development. As Farke himself stated: 'It is important that when it is time to leave, I want the club to be in a way better position.' The FA Cup represents not just a trophy, but a crucial step in executing his vision for Leeds' future.

Taking back power or taking the mickey? The activists 'liberating' food from big stores

Take Back Power, a new civil resistance group, is conducting mass shoplifting from supermarkets acr…
The Rise of Take Back PowerEve Middleton was sitting on a picnic blanket in a park, sharing out vegan biscuits with six fellow activists, when she saw a squad of police bearing down on them. About 30 officers, she said, surrounded the seven young people, and one officer told them: "Don't run or you'll be cuffed." Another officer focused on gathering evidence. "Whose Oreos are these?" they asked, seizing the biscuits."It was pretty farcical, but it's still frightening when you see that amount of officers running towards you. It's pretty scary," said student Bridie Leggatt, another of the seven. The seven activists had gathered for a "nonviolence training event" – meeting in the park to enjoy the sunny weather. Leggatt, 22, and Middleton, 25, were among 13 people arrested last weekend in Salford and London as part of a national police crackdown on a new civil resistance group called Take Back Power. The Campaign of Mass ShopliftingA further 15 arrests had been made in March when police raided a "nonviolence training" event, this time at the Grade II-listed Quaker House in Westminster. They were all held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit theft, police said, linked to Take Back Power's campaign of "mass shoplifting" in supermarkets across Britain in a protest against inequality. On TikTok, the group's videos show activists of all ages "liberating" rice, pasta, beans, nappies, stock cubes and tinned fruit from supermarkets in Cornwall, London and Manchester. They pile the goods into cardboard boxes branded with the message: "These things are going to those who need them." The items are then distributed at local food banks – if they manage to get past security.Even by today's standards of shoplifting, when supermarket thefts have reached record highs, the mass looting is quite brazen. The Financial Impact on SupermarketsSteph Parker, an assistant chief constable at Greater Manchester police, said forces would take "robust action to disrupt this type of organised criminality and it will not be tolerated".Another of those arrested last weekend, who would only give his name as Mark, said mass shoplifting would have "no real effect" on supermarkets who make billions of pounds in profit."Supermarkets are profiting off other people's misery and we can't put up with that," said Middleton, pointing out that Tesco's chief executive, Ken Murphy, was paid £9.2m last year, about 400 times that of the shop's typical worker. What about the effect on low-paid staff? Will they not risk losing their jobs if mass shoplifting has an effect on company profits?"It shouldn't be staff that get cut," said Mark, 44, who works in education. "What should get cut are the obscene profits and salaries of the chief executives."The Changing Landscape of ActivismMany of those involved with the group are seasoned activists – despite being in their early 20s – having taking part in actions with Extinction Rebellion, Just Stop Oil, Animal Rising and other groups in recent years. Neither Middleton or Leggatt wanted to say how many times they had been arrested as they feared a telling off from their parents.Take Back Power announced itself in December when activists threw custard and apple crumble at a case containing the crown jewels at the Tower of London. Eight people were charged with criminal damage over the stunts, with four due to appear before Westminster magistrates court on Monday. The group said a total of 50 people had been arrested since December, with the majority detained while taking part in "nonviolence training" events. On its website, activists are invited to join upcoming action in London "targeting the luxury lifestyle of the super-rich" by "occupying where they play and shop".A spokesperson for Take Back Power, who would only give his name as James due to the risk of arrest, said the group planned further headline-grabbing stunts this year with the aim of focusing attention on Britain's deepening inequality. The Future of Civil ResistanceJames said the organisation, which wants to see higher taxes levied on the rich and a legally binding citizens' assembly, has no leader "as such". It has raised more than £65,000 in donations in the past four months, according to a fundraising page. The vegan picnic raided by police last weekend was in Salford's Peel Park – named after Sir Robert Peel, the founder of modern law enforcement whose philosophy of "policing by consent" is a guiding principle of forces today, recognising that those in uniform operate on the basis of public trust rather than fear or force.Yet the arrests of activists at a training event – rather than for a specific act – appears to run counter to that principle, said Middleton. Parliament's joint committee on human rights has condemned legislative changes in recent years that it said have had "a chilling effect" on the right to protest in England and Wales.James, the Take Back Power spokesperson, said the group planned to build up its action with the aim of pushing inequality to the top of the agenda by the next general election, which has to be held by August 2029.Middleton believes the police crackdown is a sign that the authorities are scared."They can see that Take Back Power does speak to a lot of this country's people [who are] fed up with inequality. They are scared of what it could become."
