US Judge Questions Trump's Decision to Bar Venezuelan Funds for Maduro's Defense

A US judge has declined to dismiss charges against former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and h…
A United States judge has ruled that he will not dismiss the drug-trafficking and weapons possession charges brought against former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. In a Thursday court hearing, Judge Alvin Hellerstein questioned whether the US government has the right to bar Venezuela from funding Maduro's legal expenses. The hearing was the first for Maduro and his wife since a brief January arraignment, where they pleaded not guilty.Maduro and Flores have sought to have the charges against them thrown out. Hellerstein declined to do so, but he pressed the prosecution on some of the issues Maduro's legal team raised in its petition to dismiss the case. Among them was a decision by the administration of US President Donald Trump to prevent the Venezuelan government from financing Maduro's defence.Federal prosecutors argued that national security reasons prevented the US from allowing such payments. They also pointed to ongoing sanctions against the Venezuelan government. But Hellerstein pushed back against that argument, noting that Trump had eased sanctions against Venezuela since Maduro's abduction on January 3. He also questioned how Maduro might pose a security threat while imprisoned in New York.“The defendant is here. Flores is here. They present no further national security threat,” said Hellerstein. “I see no abiding interest of national security on the right to defend themselves.”Hellerstein emphasised that, in the US, all criminal defendants have the right to a vigorous defence, as part of the US Constitution's Sixth Amendment. Maduro, who led Venezuela from 2013 to 2026, has been charged with four criminal counts, including “narco-terrorism” conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, the possession of machine guns and the conspiracy to possess machine guns and other destructive devices. He and his wife were taken into US custody on January 3, after Trump launched an attack on Venezuela. The Trump administration has framed the military operation as a “law enforcement function”, but experts say it was widely considered illegal under international law, which protects local sovereignty.Trump himself weighed in on the proceedings during a Thursday US Cabinet meeting, hinting that further charges could be brought against Maduro. “He emptied his prisons in Venezuela, emptied his prisons into our country,” Trump said of Maduro, reiterating an unsubstantiated claim. “And I hope that charge will be brought at some point. Because that was a big charge that hasn’t been brought yet. It should be brought.”

Asda Warns of Temporary Petrol Shortages Amid Middle East Conflict

Asda's executive chair warns of temporary petrol shortages at some pumps due to high demand and sup…
The boss of Asda, the UK's second-largest fuel retailer, has warned of temporary shortages at petrol pumps due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Allan Leighton, executive chair of Asda, stated that the company has been experiencing high demand from drivers as fuel prices have surged over the past four weeks.Leighton emphasized that the temporary shortages have only affected the odd pump at a small number of Asda's petrol forecourts, typically when customers arrive at a time the retailer is waiting for a fuel delivery. He added that these shortages are temporary and addressed quickly.Petrol and diesel prices have climbed significantly since the US and Israel began their campaign against Iran on 28 February. The average price of petrol in the UK rose above 150p a litre for the first time since May 2024, reaching 150.11p, according to the RAC. Diesel prices have also increased, averaging 177.68p a litre.Leighton rejected claims that fuel retailers might be 'profiteering' from the crisis by raising their prices, stating that Asda's profit margin is coming under pressure from higher fuel costs. He also noted that the government is benefiting from the situation through increased tax revenue. The global price of oil has moved higher again, climbing 2.5% to almost $111 a barrel. This increase is likely to keep petrol and diesel prices higher in the coming weeks, affecting motorists during the Easter weekend.

USMNT Faces Center-Back Crisis Ahead of World Cup: Pochettino Seeks Solutions

The US men's national team is dealing with a sudden center-back shortage due to injuries to Chris R…
The US men's national team is facing a critical center-back shortage ahead of their friendlies against Belgium and Portugal, mirroring the kind of injury crisis they might encounter at the World Cup. Defenders Chris Richards and Miles Robinson are out due to injuries, leaving Pochettino with only three healthy natural center-backs: Tim Ream, Auston Trusty, and Mark McKenzie.Pochettino is considering tactical adjustments and alternative players to fill the gap. He mentioned that the absences could create an opportunity to try players at different spots, including Joe Scally, a right-back who has played as a right center-back in a three-man backline, and Tanner Tessmann, a midfielder who has filled in as a center-back for Lyon on several occasions. The team's strategy and player versatility will be put to the test as they prepare for the World Cup. Pochettino emphasized the importance of being prepared for such situations, stating, “When we talk about being right in the players that you pick … if this is happening in a World Cup, you need to see all the options that you have.”The friendlies against Belgium and Portugal will serve as a crucial test for the team's depth and adaptability, with potential implications for the World Cup roster. The USMNT will have to make the most of their current squad, as there are no reinforcements coming.

Castleford Tigers Roar Back with Thrilling Win Over Bradford Bulls

Castleford Tigers secured a convincing win over Bradford Bulls in a thrilling Super League match, w…
Castleford Tigers produced a stunning performance to defeat Bradford Bulls in a highly entertaining Super League match. The Tigers' attack clicked into gear, with Jason Qareqare scoring a hat-trick and leading his team's charge to a convincing victory. The match was a West Yorkshire derby that lived up to expectations, with both teams showing flashes of brilliance. However, it was Castleford who ultimately dominated the game, scoring 28 unanswered points in a 10-minute period either side of half-time to transform a nervy contest into a decisive win.Ryan Carr's Castleford side had been under pressure after a heavy defeat last week, but they responded with a confident display. Carr praised his team's performance, saying, “How we played tonight is how we want to play our rugby.”In contrast, Bradford Bulls' coach Kurt Haggerty was left to ponder what might have been, saying, “You shouldn’t score 28 points in a game and lose.” The Bulls' defensive frailties were exposed, and they will need to address these issues if they are to exceed expectations in 2026.The win for Castleford was a significant one, as it moved them up the table and gave them a much-needed boost in confidence. For Bradford, the loss was a disappointing one, but they will look to bounce back in their next match.

Beyond the Brushstrokes: A Musical Explores Monet's Hidden Struggles

"A Mirrored Monet" is a musical that explores Claude Monet's personal struggles beyond his artistic…
As its title suggests, this musical about Claude Monet is full of reflections – fittingly so given the artist's preoccupation with light. In 1916, while struggling to complete The Water Lilies with cataracts, the ageing painter (Jeff Shankley) retreats into memories of his early career. His single-minded younger self (Dean John-Wilson) may be about to change art forever, but looking back, all Monet sees is the personal cost of his drive, particularly his mistreatment of his first wife, muse and mother of his children, Camille (Brooke Bazarian). For a man usually defined by his success, this alternative reflection is refreshing. Also bouncing back at Monet are his peers' struggles, the artistic establishment's dismissal of impressionism, and art's relationship to war and women. So abundant are these reflections, in fact, that Carmel Owen's ambitious book at times becomes a house of mirrors – enticing but with a distractingly split focus. There are certainly strengths, though, not least Libby Todd's set: a floor-to-ceiling jumble of empty canvases, which fill with huge impressionist paintings, vivid washes of coloured light and animated backdrops rendered in flickering brushstrokes. It's an invitation to step inside the artistic movement that favoured feeling over realism.Director Christian Durham has an accomplished cast on his hands. Shankley brings moving introspection (and a brilliant turn as a sniffy Paris salon clerk), while Bazarian and John-Wilson deliver standout singing on a stage full of mighty voices. Their connection, however, is outshone by those between young Monet and his fellow impressionist upstarts Bazille (a lovable Ritesh Manugula) and Renoir (a breezy Sam Peggs), whose moments together are the show's strongest. They fizz with the impatience of young rebellion, and their bickering, which provides much-needed moments of gentle humour, gives way to genuine devotion. An excellent eight-piece orchestra takes on Owen's songs, which lead us aptly through the story's tonal beats – lush strings for young love; jaunty woodwind for bantering artists. But none are distinctive enough to reach the heights of "hum it all the way home".Like Monet's, this musical's ambition sometimes comes at a cost, but it still lands in a place of beauty and deep feeling.

Van der Velden developed Tilly Norwood to spark conversation about the role of AI in the entertainment industry.Van der Velden's AI creation, Tilly Norwood, gained significant attention last year when she announced that talent agents were interested in signing the AI actor. Martin Clunes Delivers Chilling Performance in Huw Edwards Abuse Drama

The review examines Channel 5's drama about disgraced BBC newsreader Huw Edwards, highlighting Mart…
When future generations examine television trends, they might be surprised by the glut of dramatisations about famous men caught in sex scandals. Jimmy Savile and Prince Andrew have both received multiple treatments, and now, with almost crushing inevitability, comes Channel 5's Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards.Edwards, the high-profile BBC newsreader who resigned in 2024 before being charged with three counts of making indecent images of children, remains defensive. Prior to the broadcast, he released a statement claiming the drama is unlikely to convey reality while asserting: I am repelled by the idea that some people enjoy viewing indecent images of children. The drama earns its title by portraying a powerful man utilizing a queasy power dynamic to manipulate a teenage boy into fulfilling his sexual desires. While not the pinnacle of drama, the film succeeds in capturing a sickening feeling in the pit of your stomach. The main draw comes from its casting. Martin Clunes, known for roles that rely on his innate likability, creates an impressively accurate Edwards. He captures the fascinating mix of swagger and vulnerability, along with Edwards' distinctive accent and diction. Even during disturbing scenes, his performance never wavers. For much of the film, Edwards remains a figure of distant menace. Instead, this is really the story of Ryan (Osian Morgan), a teenage boy who finds himself being groomed by Edwards. The drama is constructed around first-hand interviews with Ryan (using a pseudonym to protect his identity), showing how Edwards validated his desire for connection before making the relationship transactional. Most powerfully, the film depicts the effect on Ryan's parents, as their dismay at his increasing waywardness first becomes anger directed at Edwards and then fear that they had become the bad guys.Still, the producers face challenges with a story that isn't visually interesting. Much of the relationship happened over text, meaning excessive time is spent watching people type or narrate messages. The film makes odd stylistic choices, including framing everything around the Queen's death and ending with Edwards reporting on his own charges.Edwards has promised to tell his side of the story, but as the reviewer notes, few will have the stomach to hear it when that day arrives.

Manchester United Women Face Crucial Week in Champions League and WSL

Manchester United Women are set for a significant week, playing in their first European quarter-fin…
Manchester United Women are on the brink of a monumental week in their history, marked by two high-stakes matches that could define their season. The team, led by coach Marc Skinner, will first face Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday. This comes on the heels of a crucial WSL derby against league leaders Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Red Devils will then travel to Munich's Allianz Arena for the second leg against Bayern next Wednesday, seeking to make history by reaching a European semi-final. A successful week could see them establish themselves among Europe's elite, while a disappointing outcome might leave them questioning their progress. Manchester United's journey in the Champions League has been impressive, with their defense standing out as one of the best in the competition. Captain Maya Le Tissier has been a key player, recovering the ball more times than any other player in the Champions League this season. However, they face a formidable Bayern Munich side, which boasts highly skilled players like Klara Bühl and Pernille Harder. Despite injury challenges, including the absence of left-back Anna Sandberg and midfielder Ella Toone, the team received a boost with the return of Jayde Riviere. Skinner emphasized the importance of maximizing this moment, stating, “We’ve got two fantastic games against a brilliant opponent, and we’ve got to maximise the moment.”
