EU's New Entry-Exit System Causes Travel Delays of Up to Three Hours

The EU's new entry-exit system (EES) has caused travel delays of up to three hours at some European…
The EU's new entry-exit system (EES) has caused significant delays at several European airports, with travellers waiting up to three hours at border checks. The system, which came into effect on Friday in the Schengen countries, requires passengers from non-EU countries to register their personal information and biometrics at the border.Passengers in airports in countries such as France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Greece are experiencing several hours of waiting at border checks, according to the Airports Council International (ACI) body. Olivier Jankovec, the director of the ACI European division, warned that the situation will be "simply unmanageable" in the coming weeks and peak summer months. The EES has been gradually introduced since October and has already caused long delays at some airports. On Sunday, the BBC reported that more than 100 passengers were unable to board an easyJet flight from Milan to Manchester before it took off due to delays at passport desks.Airport representatives and the European Commission held a meeting to discuss problems with the system on Tuesday. The ACI has asked to extend existing exemptions and the power to fully suspend the new checks. Jankovec told the FT that the ACI needed the ability to "fully suspend EES registration whenever there are excessive waiting times at border control that are just unmanageable".A spokesperson for the European Commission said that the system is working well, with an average registration time of 70 seconds per passenger. However, the ACI has claimed that it can take up to five minutes. The commission said that there were a "few member states where technical issues have been detected" but that they "are being addressed".The EES has registered more than 52m entries and exits, as well as more than 27,000 refusals of entry, since its introduction in October. Almost 700 people were identified as posing a security threat.

Harry Maguire Faces Extended Ban After 'Joke' Comment to Officials

Manchester United's Harry Maguire has been handed an additional one-match ban by the Football Assoc…
Manchester United's Harry Maguire will miss his team's upcoming match against Chelsea due to an additional one-match ban imposed by the Football Association. The ban comes as a result of Maguire's reaction to being sent off during a match against Bournemouth last month. The 33-year-old defender was shown a red card at the Vitality Stadium for a foul in the area on Evanilson, which led to Bournemouth sealing a 2-2 draw. Following the incident, Maguire allegedly made a comment towards the officials, stating they were 'a joke.'The FA's written reasons confirmed that the fourth official, Matthew Donohue, submitted an Extraordinary Incident Report Form, claiming Maguire shouted: 'You're a joke. You're all a fucking joke.' Maguire, however, claimed he said 'something along the lines of 'it is a fucking joke.''As a result, Maguire has been imposed a one-match suspension and a £30,000 fine by an independent Regulatory Commission. This suspension adds to the absence of fellow centre-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez, potentially leading to young players Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro lining up at the heart of defence against Chelsea.

Why April Dominates the Sporting Calendar: Masters Drama, Premier League Clashes and Grand National Thrills

A look at how April’s packed schedule – from the drama of the Masters and Champions League quarter‑…
While travelling back from Aintree, a spotty Wi‑Fi connection caused the live stream of The Masters to freeze, prompting a moment of reflection: after witnessing the Grand National, a Champions League showdown between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, and the Premier League’s decisive fixtures, could any other month rival April’s sporting intensity? April consistently delivers a perfect storm of marquee events. Augusta National showcases world‑class golf, club football reaches a crescendo of tension, and the historic Grand National provides its own brand of drama. Meanwhile, the cobbled classic Paris‑Roubaix, the opening of the County Championship cricket season, the World Snooker Championship, and the iconic London Marathon all add layers to the month’s appeal. Some may argue for July, citing the Wimbledon‑US Open double‑header and the Tour de France, or point to quadrennial spectacles such as the World Cup and the Olympics. Yet those events are infrequent; April offers high‑octane action every year. The Masters alone epitomised April’s unpredictability. Rory McIlroy entered the final round with a six‑shot lead, only to slip back before rallying with four birdies in seven holes to clinch a historic repeat. Justin Rose surged with four birdies to seize a two‑shot advantage, then dramatically faltered with a bogey, a mis‑played chip and a five‑stroke hole that erased his lead. These swings underscore the razor‑thin margins that define Augusta’s final day – a single mis‑step on the 17th or 18th could rewrite the leaderboard. Club football’s April drama is equally compelling. The Champions League quarter‑final first leg between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich produced a staggering 40 shots, 16 on target, turning a seemingly routine tie into a nail‑biter. Similar fireworks unfolded in past Aprils, from Aston Villa’s epic battle with Paris Saint‑Germain to Inter’s 7‑6 semi‑final thriller against Barcelona, and the 2024 knockout drama that saw Manchester City survive penalties against Real Madrid while PSG outscored Barcelona 6‑4. In the Premier League, April often decides the title race. The 2024 season saw Arsenal toppled 2‑0 by Aston Villa, a loss that ultimately left them two points behind Manchester City. Earlier years featured similar turning points, such as City’s 2‑2 stalemate with Liverpool in 2022 that effectively secured their championship. The Grand National added its own chapter, with I Am Maximus clawing back from ten lengths behind to claim a second victory. Safety reforms have reduced fatalities – the 2024 race recorded seven fallers and seven unseated riders but, crucially, no deaths. On the roads, Wout van Aert edged out Tadej Pogacar in a heart‑stopping sprint finish at Paris‑Roubaix**, after five grueling hours of cobbles, punctures and relentless attacks. Van Aert’s emotional tears highlighted the race’s brutal beauty. All these narratives converge to make April a uniquely packed month of sport, offering a blend of historic tradition, high‑stakes competition, and unforgettable moments that keep fans glued to their screens.

Southampton Close Gap to Ipswich with 3-0 Win Over Blackburn

Southampton moved just three points off automatic promotion in the Championship after a 3-0 victory…
Southampton have moved just three points off automatic promotion after a 3-0 victory over Blackburn, coupled with Ipswich’s 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth. The hosts extended their unbeaten run to 18 games in all competitions with a comprehensive victory at St Mary’s, secured by first-half goals from Cyle Larin and Ryan Manning and a late strike from Cameron Archer. The Southampton manager, Tonda Eckert, made five changes to the team which beat Derby 2-1 on Saturday but there was no disruption to the relentless rhythm which has catapulted the club up the Championship table and earned an FA Cup semi-final spot. Saints made the breakthrough in the 24th minute when Kuryu Matsuki set Archer free down the left, and he squared the ball perfectly for Larin to slot home. Shea Charles then went close with a rampaging run and shot, before Manning’s low shot deflected in past Blackburn keeper Balazs Toth two minutes from half-time. Matsuki missed a glorious chance to add a third after brilliant work from Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Larin left him with the goal at his mercy, and substitute Leo Scienza went close at the near post before Blackburn finally threatened. Daniel Peretz beat away Yuki Ohashi’s shot before Ryoya Morishita struck the post on the rebound. Archer completed the scoring late on to secure Southampton’s seventh win in a row, moving them up to fourth with a home fixture against second-placed Ipswich to come, after they head to Wembley and face Manchester City in the FA Cup. “I think no matter who we put on at the moment, they’re all ready to perform. It’s quite an easy decision at the moment to pick a team, because they’re all ready to go,” Eckert said after the game. Ipswich missed the chance to tighten their grip on second place as they slipped to defeat at Fratton Park. Conor Shaughnessy and Colby Bishop claimed quickfire goals as Portsmouth boosted their survival hopes with a crucial victory.

UK Clears Axel Springer's £575m Takeover of Telegraph Titles

The UK's culture secretary, Lisa Nandy, has approved Axel Springer's £575m takeover of the Telegrap…
The UK's culture secretary, Lisa Nandy, has cleared Axel Springer's £575m takeover of the Telegraph titles, paving the way for the end of almost three years of uncertainty over the ownership of the newspapers. Nandy stated that she does not believe there are grounds to intervene and refer the deal to the media regulator, Ofcom, for an in-depth regulatory investigation. The culture secretary has the power to call in mergers for further scrutiny on public interest grounds, as well as the new foreign state influence regime. Axel Springer, a German media group, had tabled a significantly superior offer to Lord Rothermere's Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT), prompting the United Arab Emirates-backed group that controls the Telegraph to seek UK government approval to switch the permission to sell the right-to-buy option to Axel Springer. The Telegraph titles will add to Axel Springer's media portfolio, which includes Europe's biggest newspaper, Bild, Politico, and Business Insider. Axel Springer CEO, Mathias Döpfner, has promised to invest in the Telegraph to make it the “leading centre-right media outlet in the English-speaking world”, with a rapid expansion planned for the US supported by the expertise of Politico and Business Insider. The sale of the newspapers was kicked off in 2023 when the Barclay family lost control of the group over £1.16bn of unpaid debts owed to Lloyds bank. RedBird IMI, which is 75% controlled by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the vice-president of the UAE and the owner of Manchester City, took control of the publishing group after agreeing to pay the Barclays' debts.

Gary Neville’s Overlap acquires Mark Goldbridge’s 3.7 million‑subscriber football YouTube channels in seven‑figure deal

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville’s media venture, The Overlap, has purchased Mark Gol…
Gary Neville’s sports‑media outfit, The Overlap, has secured ownership of two of the United Kingdom’s most followed football YouTube channels, a transaction estimated at a seven‑figure sum.The channels—The United Stand and That’s Football—bring together approximately 3.7 million subscribers, bolstering The Overlap’s audience to around 6 million across all its platforms. While the partnership may appear surprising given past on‑air sparring, Neville acknowledged his former criticism of “those bloody YouTubers” and Goldbridge’s frequent jabs at his own Manchester United opinions. He emphasized that no grudges remain and that the collaboration is driven by business logic, not personal rivalry.Speaking to the press, Neville said the deal is designed to tap the “noise segment” of football coverage—fans’ appetite for constant debate, opinion, and analysis when live matches are not on. He described the goal as delivering “direct, personality‑led content” that keeps supporters engaged around the clock. The United Stand, with 2.26 million subscribers, is the largest Manchester United fan channel on the platform, while That’s Football reaches 1.46 million viewers with broader Premier League coverage. Under the new ownership, The United Stand will debut formats such as “Stick to United” (featuring ex‑players and journalists) and a daily news show titled “The Daily United.” That’s Football is slated for a rebrand and the launch of a daily football‑news podcast channel. The Overlap, founded in 2021, already produces flagship shows like “Stick to Football,” “Fan Debate” with Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes, and a cricket‑focused series launched last year. This acquisition follows its earlier move in January, when Global took a majority stake in the company, underscoring YouTube’s rising influence in sports broadcasting.Neville framed the purchase as the first of “hopefully a few more” aimed at building premium channels for major clubs across the UK and Europe. He assured fans that any new content will complement Goldbridge’s existing style, adding “value and intelligence” through contributions from former players and journalists.Goldbridge, whose real name is Brent Di Cesare, expressed enthusiasm for the next phase, noting that a decade of building The United Stand and That’s Football has prepared him for the resources and credibility The Overlap can provide to elevate his platforms.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remains optimistic about his team's chances despite mounting injury concerns, particularly with star player Bukayo Saka sidelined with an achilles issue.Arteta insists he has 'zero fear' that Arsenal could end the season without silverware, but admits there are significant doubts over Saka's return. Saka has not played since the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City last month and Arteta is uncertain when he will be back.'Hopefully it's going to be a matter of days and not weeks,' Arteta said. 'But he has to see when he's loading more, how he responds to that kind of progression.'Arsenal are also facing doubts over Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori and captain Martin Ødegaard for their Champions League match against Sporting. Additionally, Arteta will make a late call on Declan Rice's fitness after the England midfielder missed training on Tuesday.Despite recent setbacks, including a home defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League, Arteta remains positive. 'Fire. I'm on fire. I'm on fire,' he said. 'Nothing else. I'm dreaming so much. I've done so much to be in this position because I know how this club was.
