Turkey is in mourning after a deadly school shooting in the southern province of Kahramanmaras left nine people dead, including eight students and a teacher. The attacker, identified as 14-year-old Isa Aras Mersinli, opened fire on two classrooms at the Ayser Calik School on Wednesday before being found dead.Funerals were held on Thursday for the victims, including maths teacher Ayla Kara, 55. A 10th victim died while being treated in hospital on Thursday, and six of those wounded in the attack were in critical condition. The interior minister, Mustafa Ciftci, said the attacker is believed to have used guns that belonged to his father, a former police officer. The attack was the country's second school shooting in two days, following an attack on Tuesday at a high school in Sanliurfa province that wounded 16 people. At a funeral for four of the victims held near Kahramanmaras city's main mosque on Thursday, one father sat motionless beside the coffin of his daughter, 10-year-old Zeynep. "Our grief is endless. These children were like our own. They were all innocent," said Vezir Yucel, father of a student named Yusuf, who lost his close friend, 10-year-old Bayram, in the shooting. The interior and education ministries held a joint school security meeting in the capital, Ankara, on Thursday, which was attended by both ministers and all 81 of Turkey's provincial governors, as well as police chiefs and provincial education directors. Dozens of students were arrested on Thursday over alleged social media posts implying they might stage similar attacks.Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that 67 social media users were detained over posts targeting 54 different schools. The incident has raised concerns about school safety and the rise of gun violence in Turkey.

Christian Petzold's 'Miroirs No 3' - A Haunting Exploration of Grief and Family Dysfunction

German director Christian Petzold, known for his elegant and disquieting films, presents 'Miroirs No 3', a psychological mystery that delves into the complexities of grief and family dysfunction. The film, starring Paula Beer as Laura, a talented pianist struggling with depression, navigates the aftermath of a sudden violent trauma. The story takes a fascinating turn when Laura, who survives a catastrophic car crash, meets Betty, an intense and enigmatic woman, played by Barbara Auer. Betty's character is shrouded in mystery, and her relationship with Laura becomes increasingly complex. As Laura becomes entangled in Betty's family dynamics, the film masterfully crafts an atmosphere of tension and unease.Petzold's direction weaves a narrative that eschews macabre twists and instead, steers towards a redemptive conclusion. The film's use of Maurice Ravel's Miroirs, particularly the third movement 'A Boat on the Ocean', adds a dreamlike quality to the proceedings. This subtle touch showcases Petzold's skill in creating an elegantly contrived study of an unhappy family group. The performances, particularly from Beer and Auer, bring depth to the film's exploration of emotional trauma and the complexities of human relationships. As the story unfolds, the audience is left questioning the characters' motivations and the true nature of their interactions. 'Miroirs No 3' is a thought-provoking and hauntingly beautiful film that solidifies Petzold's reputation as a master of modern European cinema.

Haiti Fires Culture Ministry Workers After Deadly Citadel Stampede

Haiti's Ministry of Culture and Communication has fired two workers following a deadly stampede at …
Haiti has entered a period of national mourning following a tragic stampede at the historic Citadelle Laferriere in the northern part of the country. At least 25 people lost their lives in the chaos that erupted at the entrance of the citadel on Saturday, as a mix of visitors attempted to exit and enter the site. The Ministry of Culture and Communication has taken swift action, firing two government officials in the aftermath of the disaster. One, a director at the Institute for the Preservation of National Heritage, was accused of 'serious negligence,' while the other, a Ministry employee, was criticized for 'biased passivity.'The government has stated that it believes the tragedy was the result of administrative negligence and has vowed to 'fully assume its responsibilities.' The event has sparked widespread outrage and highlights the multiple crises facing the Haitian government ahead of its general elections later this year. The stampede was exacerbated by stormy weather conditions, with heavy rain battering northern Haiti and prompting event participants to seek shelter. The inclement weather also caused flooding in other parts of the country, resulting in approximately 12 additional deaths and 900 homes being inundated. This tragedy is the latest challenge for Haiti, which has been grappling with gang violence and political instability, particularly since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. The situation has led to 16,000 deaths and 1.5 million displaced since 2022, according to UN reports.

Atlético Madrid clinches Bigger Cup semi‑final spot with Lookman's winner as Simeone celebrates and Raphinha vows to appeal refereeing

Atlético Madrid advanced to the Bigger Cup semi‑finals after Ademola Lookman's late goal eliminated…
At the Metropolitano, Barcelona appeared to be in control early on, with Lamine Yamal delivering a pinpoint cross that set up a near‑certain goal for Fermín López. The strike was thwarted by a spectacular save from Juan Musso, leaving López drenched in claret. Had the ball found the net, Barcelona would have taken a 3‑0 lead and an advantage in the tie after already scoring through Yamal and Ferran Torres in the opening half‑hour. The deadlock was broken when Charlton‑trained forward Ademola Lookman netted the decisive goal, sending Atlético Madrid into the Bigger Cup semi‑finals. The victory sparked an exuberant reaction from coach Diego Simeone, who praised his side’s enthusiasm and readiness for the next challenge, hinting at a possible showdown with Arsenal or Sporting. In the aftermath, Barcelona winger Raphinha launched a scathing critique of referee Clément Turpin, alleging that the officiating had robbed his team not only in the second leg but also in the first. The Brazilian warned that his comments could land him on UEFA’s disciplinary “naughty step,” with precedent suggesting a suspension of at least three matches for such language. The controversy deepened as Turpin refrained from issuing any bookings to Atlético players and denied Barcelona what they believed were two clear penalty opportunities across both legs. Musso, who had earlier saved López’s chance, dismissed the accusations, emphasizing that the match was decided on the pitch and that disciplinary actions are part of the game’s reality.Further coverage of the European fixtures, including live updates from the Bigger Cup quarter‑finals and analysis from Guardian experts, is available on the publication’s football portal.

IMF Warns of Soaring Global Debt Levels Amid Escalating Iran Conflict

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the escalating conflict in Iran could lead to…
The IMF has cautioned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly the escalation of tensions between Iran and Israel, poses a substantial risk to global economic stability. The fund's half-yearly fiscal monitor report highlights that global debt levels are on track to increase due to the war's impact on energy and food prices, higher government borrowing costs, and slower economic growth.Against this volatile backdrop, the IMF has warned that governments may be forced to choose between cushioning the cost of living shock and maintaining sound public finances. The fund's report notes that global debt levels have already risen to almost 94% of GDP and are projected to reach 100% by 2029, a level not seen since the aftermath of World War II.The IMF emphasizes that any energy support schemes to shield households and businesses from the impact of higher energy prices should be targeted and temporary, focusing on those most exposed and least able to absorb price increases. The fund also cautions against using further borrowing to cushion the blow, suggesting that governments should instead reallocate spending within existing limits and prioritize crisis-related spending. The report highlights the risks associated with higher debt and interest costs, which could eventually force governments to make tougher choices or destabilize debt markets. The IMF points to the UK's experience with Liz Truss's 2022 mini-budget as an example of how market confidence can be lost when fiscal policies are perceived as unsustainable.
