Fuck the Polis Review: Cryptic Docu-Essay Explores Greek Myth and Modernity

Director Rita Azevedo Gomes's 'Fuck the Polis' is a cryptic docu-essay exploring the tension betwee…
The Lead: A Cryptic Journey Through GreeceThe title of Rita Azevedo Gomes's lyrical but frustrating docu-essay about her travels in Greece cuts both ways—expressing impatience with classical ideals or critiquing modern society that has betrayed ancient standards of beauty and harmony. The film presents a tension between nostalgic aspirations and sobering reality, with texts recited over travelogue images from Athens and the Cyclades. The Artistic Vision: Myth Meets ModernityGomes adds a layer of fictionalization to her exploits, reading a poem by João Miguel Fernandes Jorge based on a 2007 journey to Greece. The poem tells of Irma, who romances a young man named Ion on the island of Delos—birthplace of Apollo and Artemis—but the affair founders against incongruous modern elements like Chinese cargo ships traversing the 21st-century Aegean. The tension between myth and modernity hangs over the film like red kites hovering above ancient ruins. The Personal Context: Beauty and TranscendenceTwo-thirds into the film, Gomes reveals what originally drove her to seek refuge in Greece: an ominous medical diagnosis that has since receded. Her preoccupation with finding consolatory beauty and transcendence is only fleetingly present in a visual collage that feels haphazardly aligned with dense texts. The crew reads many texts on camera—including excerpts from Byron and Keats—but this alienation device comes over inert and uninspiring. The Cultural Resonance: Poets in a Modern WorldSinger María Farantoúri, whom Gomes watched on her first visit to Greece, supplies some focus with lyrics that keep 'the old flame burning.' As she sings, 'The people always find new kings—but we are poets and we remain alone.' Gomes positions herself in this camp, 'far from the polis,' suggesting a deliberate distancing from contemporary society's values and priorities. The Critical Reception: Sphinxlike EnigmaWhile the film presents a visually rich experience, its sphinx-like nature proves to be both its strength and weakness. The reviewer suggests that Gomes's 'forlorn ramblings' may intentionally reflect how degraded modern sensibilities can no longer serve up classical concision. The film's cryptic nature may be part of its artistic statement, but ultimately leaves the viewer wanting more clarity and connection.

The Unprecedented Career of James Milner: Breaking Premier League Records

James Milner has achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the Premier League's most appearance-make…
The Lead: A Record-Breaking CareerJames Milner has etched his name into football history by breaking the Premier League appearance record, a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about his longevity, consistency, and unwavering dedication to the sport. The 40-year-old veteran has demonstrated an extraordinary level of professionalism throughout his career, earning admiration from teammates and rivals alike for his commitment to excellence both on and off the pitch. The Professional Profile: Beyond Ordinary DedicationFormer teammates paint a picture of a player who was exceptional from his early days. Michael Bridges, who roomed with Milner during his time at Leeds, recalls: "James Milner was the most dedicated and professional young player I've met. He also took the not inconsiderable transition from being at school to playing in the Leeds first team totally in his stride. Nothing fazed him. He was very level-headed."This level-headedness extended to Milner's lifestyle choices. While teammates socialized with alcoholic drinks, Milner remained steadfast in his commitment to peak physical condition, often opting for Ribena Toothkind instead. His dedication was so complete that teammates nicknamed him the "hydration monster" due to his intense focus on maintaining optimal hydration levels. The Technical Mastery: Versatility Across PositionsWhat sets Milner apart is not just his longevity but his remarkable versatility. Throughout his career, he has excelled in multiple positions, adapting his game to suit different tactical systems and managerial philosophies. Bridges notes: "Above all he's a very intelligent footballer who reads the game well and has the versatility to play in different positions for different types of managers. That's helped him."This adaptability has allowed Milner to remain relevant across different eras of football evolution. From his early days at Leeds to his current role, he has consistently demonstrated an ability to read the game and position himself effectively, even as the tactical demands of the sport have evolved. The Impact Analysis: Redefining ProfessionalismMilner's career offers a fascinating case study in modern professionalism. In an era where footballers often face intense scrutiny and shorter careers, Milner has bucked the trend through his extraordinary discipline and commitment. Steve Harper, who worked with Milner at Newcastle, draws a direct comparison: "His level of professionalism is right up there with Cristiano Ronaldo's. It's no coincidence that they're both still going strong."This approach has had ripple effects throughout the sport. Younger players now have a role model for how to maintain peak performance over an extended career. Milner's career demonstrates that longevity in professional football is not merely about talent but about lifestyle choices, work ethic, and mental fortitude. The Legacy: More Than Just AppearancesAs Milner surpasses Gareth Barry's previous record of 653 Premier League appearances, his legacy extends far beyond the numbers. Curtis Davies, who played with Milner at Aston Villa, emphasizes: "Breaking the appearance record will be testament to him and the way he has lived his life, and if anyone is going to go past Gareth Barry, another former Villa teammate, there's no better person than James to do so."Milner's career represents a different kind of greatness in modern football—one built on consistency, adaptability, and unwavering professionalism rather than just fleeting moments of brilliance. As he continues to add to his record, he stands as a testament to the values that can sustain a career at the highest level for more than two decades.

Bird Masturbation Proven Natural, Experts Urge End to Punitive Practices

A new study of 120 bird species finds that masturbation is a common, healthy behavior, especially i…
Executive Summary: Masturbation Recognized as Natural Avian BehaviorA collaborative survey of 120 bird species shows that self‑pleasuring is widespread, more frequent in the wild than in captivity, and poses no health risk. The findings challenge long‑standing advice to discourage or punish the behavior and call for a shift in veterinary guidance.Comprehensive Survey Highlights Widespread Onanism Across Diverse SpeciesThe research, led by Dr Chloe Heys (University of Lancashire) and co‑author Dr Matilda Brindle (Oxford University), combined expert interviews, online keeper communities, and published literature. Species documented include parrots, ducks, turkeys, chickens and numerous others, with both males and females engaging in the activity.Quantitative Findings Underscore Higher Incidence in Wild Populations120 bird species examined, spanning captive and wild individuals.Incidence reported as higher in wild birds than in captivity.Male birds were slightly more frequently mentioned, but female participation was notable.Repercussions for Veterinary Practice and Bird WelfareVeterinarians are urged to reassure owners that the behavior is normal and not a sign of distress. Interventions such as perch removal, hormonal treatments, or even surgical de‑sexing are deemed unnecessary except in rare pathological cases. Dr Ana Basto (University of Lancashire) emphasizes that the study will help vets provide evidence‑based advice.Projected Shift Toward Non‑Interventionist Care in Avian HusbandryAs the scientific community accepts masturbation as a natural component of avian sexual repertoires, bird‑keeping guidelines are expected to evolve. Future husbandry practices will likely focus on monitoring for genuine health issues rather than attempting to suppress a harmless behavior, fostering better welfare outcomes for both captive and wild birds.

Dance Festival Immersion: From Terrified Novice to Weekend Warrior

A first-time dancer chronicles their experience taking multiple dance classes at Melbourne's Rising…
The Dance Challenge: A Weekend Immersion As I wait for my first Cuban salsa class to begin, I have the distinct feeling that I am poorly prepared. I'm wearing heavy jeans, a bulky woollen sweater and boots. I have never done a dance class in my life – or any kind of exercise class. I don't know anything about salsa, Cuban or otherwise. Standing alone, I notice that everyone has come with at least one friend, and begin to suspect that it takes two to Cuban salsa. This year, Rising festival – Melbourne's winter arts offering – has consolidated its longstanding dance focus into a mini-festival: the inaugural Australian Dance Biennale, showcasing Australian and international work. There's also a series of dance classes, romantically titled The Land of 1000 Dances, held in the romantically decrepit Flinders Street Ballroom. Running daily until 7 June, with classes costing $29 a pop, the diverse schedule includes Afro-fusion, ballroom, voguing, waltz and K-pop for teens and tweens. From Salsa to Shuffle: A Dancer's Journey As an audience member, I am an avid appreciator of dance; as a participant, I can most kindly be described as "curious" but uncoordinated. What if I went to a bunch of dance classes and then wrote about it? Precisely 24 hours before my first class, the misgivings begin – doing my first dance class while dressed for the show I'm seeing directly afterwards sounds like a bad idea. At the ballroom, I am briefly reassured: the crowd is a diverse mix of ages, genders and bodies, and hardly anyone is wearing dance-appropriate clothing. But the class itself is a blur – sometimes literally – as I try to learn and enact the cucaracha, the guapo and other basic Cuban salsa moves; attempt to locate the beat, my hips, any sense of coordination at all. Every time I feel as though I'm starting to get the hang of something, the instructor adds a new step. Then he corrals us into pairs – and a series of new moves, yelling "change partners!" every three minutes. Going solo, it turns out, is fine: everyone is friendly; many seem as unsure as I am. Some are nailing it but there's a sense of camaraderie: we're all in this together. That said, we're all a bit too sweaty to be holding each other. The Social Dynamics of Dance Classes I move from absolute befuddlement, through occasional moments of triumph, to a sense of quiet despair. A move that involves a 360-degree rotation to an eight-count almost breaks my spirit and I consider quitting. To my surprise, this awakens a latent fighting spirit: screw the rules, I'm doing it my way. I experience brief elation. Then we change partners and I find myself in a cursed duet involving four left feet. The elation shrivels. The class ends and I run to the theatre feeling like a dank, demoralised biohazard. I spend the next hour watching a show by the Irish choreographer Oona Doherty featuring a mix of professional, student and untrained dancers – and I mentally salute them all, with a newfound appreciation for the dark art of dance. Finding Joy in Movement I approach my next class, Melbourne shuffle, with a sense of dread. Not only do I now know how bad I am but I have agreed to be photographed. And I made the choice without knowing anything about the Melbourne shuffle, mistakenly assuming it was somewhere in the ballpark of the city's other great cultural tradition. This feeling I am experiencing, I discover, is known as "endorphins". The physical exertion, the mental focus required, the social connection – it all combines to create a chemical cocktail that makes the experience worthwhile despite the occasional humiliation. By the end of my dance weekend, I haven't become a dancer, but I've gained a profound respect for those who are. The Australian Dance Biennale and The Land of 1000 Dances offer not just entertainment, but an invitation to participate, to challenge oneself, and to discover new dimensions of movement and expression.

A Parent's Guide to Nurturing Young Artists: Home Art Adventures with Toddlers

A parent shares their experience of introducing art to their toddler through home activities and ga…
A Day of Artful ParentingThere's a special magic in introducing young children to the world of art, especially when it happens in the comfort of home. This narrative follows a parent and toddler as they navigate a day filled with creative expression, from building animal houses with colorful magnet tiles to exploring the welcoming spaces of a local gallery.Creating an Artistic Home EnvironmentThe journey begins in the child's bedroom, where walls are adorned with playful prints by artist Moira Frith and a William Nicholson piece of the Velveteen Rabbit. The ceiling features elephant and bee mobiles alongside Japanese paper animal balloons, creating an immersive artistic space that welcomes the child into a world of creativity from the moment they wake up.Morning Art AdventuresThe day commences with art-themed board books featuring Miffy, the little white rabbit, and an interactive color-mixing book. Despite the artistic focus, the toddler's attention naturally shifts to his plastic tractor, demonstrating how children naturally balance different interests. The morning continues with building a house for farm animals using colorful magnet tiles, stacking wooden blocks, and experimenting with stickers on paper. The Gallery ExperienceAfter a brief outdoor chalk-drawing interlude, the parent and child visit the William Morris Gallery, which the child affectionately calls "the gallery." This familiar space offers crayons, blank paper, building blocks, and soft toys—all set against an artistic backdrop. The gallery has become a regular Wednesday destination with the child's grandmother, representing how cultural institutions can be woven into family routines.Art Education for the Very YoungChildren naturally lack hierarchical distinctions about what constitutes art, embracing everything from professional paintings to their own scribbles. This democratic approach to creativity allows for boundless exploration and expression. The article suggests that both home-based art activities and gallery visits play complementary roles in nurturing young artistic sensibilities.Cultivating Future Art EnthusiastsAs the child grows, the parent envisions future art adventures, possibly even a trip to the Miffy Museum in Utrecht for the child's second birthday. This forward-looking perspective suggests that early artistic experiences can blossom into lifelong appreciation of creativity and culture.Resources for Young ArtistsFor parents looking to bring art into their homes, the article recommends several books:Miffy the Artist by Dick Bruna (also Miffy at the Gallery, and Miffy and the Artists)Famous Art to Colour by Susan MeredithThis Book Will Make You an Artist by Ruth Millington

The Guest Documentary Exposes Perils of Protecting Refugees in Poland‑Belarus Border Zone

The Guardian review of the documentary *The Guest* spotlights the perilous conditions faced by refu…
Lead: A Personal Tale of Shelter Amid a Militarised BorderThe Guest follows a Polish family who open their home to Alhyder, a 27‑year‑old Syrian refugee, illustrating the daily danger in the Poland‑Belarus “danger zone”. The film reveals how political decisions have turned a humanitarian corridor into a lethal exclusion area.Documentary Unveils the 3‑km Polish Exclusion ZoneSince 2021, the Polish government has enforced a 3‑km strip along the Belarus border where migrants are seized and deported back to Belarus. The documentary captures constant military patrols, the ban on NGOs, and the covert network of locals providing food, clothing, and translation.Location: Small town in Poland bordering BelarusKey figures: Zvika Gregory Portnoy and Zuzanna Solakiewicz (directors)Subject: Alhyder, Syrian refugeeNumbers that Frame the Crisis27‑year‑old refugee at the centre of the story3‑km exclusion zone established in 2021Film released on 5 June on True Story platformHumanitarian Impact and Ethical ConcernsThe film highlights the bravery of “good samaritans” but also raises ethical questions after showing a deceased refugee’s body without clear consent. By focusing mainly on victimhood, the documentary risks reducing displaced people to statistics rather than full human narratives.Looking Ahead: Policy and AwarenessAs the documentary reaches international audiences, it may pressure EU and Polish authorities to reconsider the exclusion zone policy and improve humanitarian access. Continued media attention could spur NGOs to negotiate limited access or push for legal challenges against forced deportations.

Maggie O'Farrell's 'Land': A Mythical Journey Through Post-Famine Ireland

Maggie O'Farrell's 10th novel 'Land' is an ambitious story set in post-famine Ireland, following tw…
The LeadMaggie O'Farrell's 10th novel, "Land," is a sweeping narrative set in the aftermath of the Irish famine, exploring themes of trauma, identity, and cultural preservation through the lens of mapmaking and Celtic mythology. The novel follows multiple generations across various locations, blending historical realism with mythical elements to create a complex tapestry of Irish heritage. The Historical and Mythical Framework"Land" opens in 1865 on a rainswept Irish peninsula, where Tomás and his 10-year-old son Liam are mapping territory for the English Ordnance Survey. Tomás, a famine survivor working for the English, must navigate complex local legends and toponyms while dealing with his own trauma. The narrative expands to include Dublin, Rome, Quebec, and Kerala, weaving together the stories of multiple generations and incorporating elements of Celtic mythology through a magical well that transforms those who drink from it.The Narrative Structure and StyleO'Farrell adopts the role of a "seanchaí" (traditional storyteller) in this novel, employing fable-like elements, direct address to the reader, and shifting perspectives between human characters, animals, and even the land itself. The narrative unfolds episodically with an uneven passage of time, creating a storytelling approach that feels more traditional than conventional. However, this results in a book that is light on dialogue and dense in description, with characters that don't always feel fully developed. The Literary and Cinematic PotentialThe reviewer notes that "Land" feels "uncomfortable in its own skin," neither fully fable nor history nor family saga. However, the novel's visual quality and episodic nature suggest strong cinematic potential. Indeed, the film rights have already been acquired by the same production company that adapted O'Farrell's "Hamnet," with several award nominations. The novel contains scenes written with a cinematic perspective, as if describing character movements for a screenplay. The Cultural Significance"Land" explores the complex relationship between Ireland and its colonial rulers through the lens of mapmaking—a process that both documented and erased Irish place names and cultural knowledge. By incorporating Celtic mythology and focusing on the trauma of the famine, O'Farrell creates a narrative that grapples with cultural preservation and identity in the face of historical upheaval. The novel's magical elements serve as a counterpoint to the harsh realities of colonial mapping and famine survival.

US Reaffirms Ban on AI Chip Shipments to Chinese Subsidiaries Abroad

The U.S. Department of Commerce clarified that licensing rules for advanced AI chips cover any firm…
The U.S. Department of Commerce has issued new guidance confirming that its export‑control licensing requirements for advanced AI chips apply to any company with a headquarters or parent in China, effectively re‑imposing the ban on shipments to Chinese subsidiaries operating outside mainland China.Clarification Extends Licensing Rules to All China‑Headquartered EntitiesThe Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) released the notice on Sunday, stating that the existing licence regime now covers subsidiaries of Chinese firms wherever they are located. The clarification responds to questions about enforcement after the Trump administration scrapped the Biden‑era AI Diffusion Framework, which had proposed a global licensing system for AI chips. Nvidia confirmed its sales process already aligns with the clarified rules, while competitors AMD, Intel and contract manufacturer TSMC have not commented.Financial Stakes Highlighted by Nvidia’s Blackwell GPU BanThe guidance reaffirms that Nvidia’s top‑tier Blackwell GPUs remain prohibited for export to any entity linked to a Chinese parent. Nvidia also noted that its H200 chip, while not the most advanced, is roughly six times as powerful as the previously allowed H20 chip. These restrictions directly affect revenue streams tied to high‑end AI hardware sales to the Chinese market.Implications for U.S.–China AI Competition and Supply ChainsAnalysts view the move as a response to perceived loopholes that allowed Chinese firms to acquire export‑controlled chips abroad. Former State Department official Chris McGuire warned that the lack of clear enforcement had enabled large‑scale purchases, potentially eroding U.S. strategic advantage. The reaffirmed ban signals a tightening of the technology frontier, pressuring chip designers and foundries to reassess cross‑border supply chains.Outlook: Potential Tightening of Export Controls and Industry AdjustmentsWith the clarification now in place, the U.S. may monitor compliance more closely and consider additional restrictions if illegal shipments are identified. Companies operating in the AI‑chip ecosystem are likely to enhance vetting procedures and may shift focus toward markets deemed lower‑risk, while Chinese firms could accelerate domestic development to offset reduced access to U.S. technology.

Israel-Lebanon Conflict Escalates as US-Iran Talks Intensify

Israel's expanding invasion of Lebanon draws global condemnation with France calling for an emergen…
The LeadMiddle East tensions are escalating on two fronts as Israel expands its military operations into Lebanon while simultaneously, the United States appears to be nearing a significant agreement with Iran. These parallel developments are reshaping the geopolitical landscape of the region and drawing international attention.Israel's Military Expansion into LebanonIsrael has launched what is being described as its largest advance into Lebanon in years, with airstrikes reportedly devastating areas including Tyre. This military expansion represents a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group. The operation appears to be targeting positions held by Hezbollah along the border region, though the full scope and objectives of the invasion remain unclear.Global Condemnation and Diplomatic ResponseThe international community has reacted swiftly to Israel's actions, with France formally requesting an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. This diplomatic move indicates growing concern among world powers about the potential for wider regional conflict. The Security Council meeting will likely focus on de-escalation efforts and humanitarian concerns as the violence continues to unfold.US-Iran Diplomacy DevelopmentsSimultaneously, diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran are reportedly reaching a critical juncture. US President Donald Trump has announced that he is close to securing a 'very good deal' with Iran, though US media sources suggest that the administration is pushing for significantly tougher terms than in previous negotiations. These talks come amid heightened tensions between the two nations, with both sides attempting to establish new terms for their relationship.Regional ImplicationsThe parallel developments in Lebanon and Iran-US relations create complex dynamics across the Middle East. While Israel focuses on its northern border with Lebanon, the potential for a US-Iran agreement could reshape Iran's relationships with regional allies and adversaries. These simultaneous developments may be strategically linked, with each potentially influencing the other's trajectory.Future OutlookThe coming weeks will be critical in determining the outcomes of both situations. In Lebanon, the international community will be watching for any potential ceasefire agreements or further escalation. Meanwhile, the US-Iran talks could result in a new agreement that alters the geopolitical balance in the region. Both developments will likely have significant implications for Middle East stability and global security.
