Zoh Amba’s ‘Eyes Full’: A Rugged Country‑Rock Debut Laced with Tenderness

Zoh Amba, celebrated for avant‑jazz saxophone work, releases ‘Eyes Full’, a rugged country‑rock alb…
Lead: A Raw, Rugged Country‑Rock Debut from Jazz Saxophonist Zoh AmbaVeteran free‑jazz saxophonist Zoh Amba steps out of the improvisational realm with ‘Eyes Full’, a country‑rock record that feels both bruised and beautiful. The album opens with the track “OCD”, where a twinkling guitar riff gives way to a chaotic, blustering strum that mirrors the lyrical theme of a boy “diagnosed with ‘dreamin’ all the time’”.From Free Jazz to Country Rock: The Musical PivotAmba’s hometown of Kingsport, Tennessee informs the record’s lyrical landscape, with cryptic postcards recalling childhood memories. While Amba is best known for saxophone virtuosity, the new material showcases a vocal approach as daring as their instrumental work—pushing past breaking points, cracking, whinnying, and squeaking to convey raw emotion.Tracks like “Southern Soil” echo the intensity of indie folk acts such as Bright Eyes and Big Thief, while “Weed Eating” balances feral humour with despair, and “Blueberry Thorn” offers a dusty fiddle that feels as piercing as literal thorns. Why “Eyes Full” Reshapes the Indie Country LandscapeThe album’s blend of gritty guitar work and tender lyricism challenges the conventional boundaries of indie country, suggesting that genre‑fluidity can thrive when an artist brings the same fearless improvisation from jazz to a new sonic field. By marrying experimental aggression with heartfelt storytelling, Amba creates a template for future cross‑genre explorations.Looking Ahead: What This Shift Means for Amba’s Future and the GenreIf “Eyes Full” resonates with listeners, it could open doors for Amba to oscillate between jazz and country‑rock, perhaps even spawning collaborations that further blur genre lines. For the broader indie‑country scene, the record signals that authenticity rooted in personal history can coexist with avant‑garde experimentation, encouraging other artists to take similar bold detours.

Kushner‑Linked Luxury Resort Sparks Massive Protests on Albania’s Sazan Island

A $1.6 bn luxury resort proposed by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump on Albania’s protected Sazan Isl…
Executive Summary: Kushner‑linked Resort Triggers Nationwide Protests Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner announced a $1.6 bn luxury development on Albania’s uninhabited Sazan Island. Within days, thousands of Albanians took to the streets, demanding the project be halted amid environmental, legal and political concerns. The Kushner Vision for Sazan Island The plan envisions a sprawling seaside complex of hotels, apartments and villas within the protected Vjosa‑Narta delta. It also includes converting a former communist‑era military base into a resort. The development is being promoted by Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, with strategic investor status granted to Atlantic Incubation Partners, a firm linked to Kushner’s Affinity Partners fund. Financial Scale and Government Promises Project valuation: $1.6 bn (approximately €1.4 bn). Prime Minister Edi Rama has cited a broader €4 bn ($4.6 bn) investment package covering the Vlora region. Government claims the resort will create jobs, boost tourism revenue and help Albania meet its EU accession target for 2030. Environmental and Social Backlash Thousands protested in Tirana and coastal towns over three consecutive evenings. More than 60,000 signatures on a petition demanding a halt to construction. Over 40 environmental NGOs, led by the Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA), warned the project would damage a biodiverse wetland and migratory bird habitats. Demonstrators displayed signs such as “Nation is not for sale” and “I don’t want Albania like Dubai”. Governance, Transparency and Corruption Probes Albania’s special anti‑corruption prosecutor has opened an investigation into: Changes to the protected status of the Vjosa‑Narta area. Bypassing of public tender procedures for land contracts. The source of funds used to acquire coastal land titles. Critics note the lack of public announcements when fencing and excavators appeared on the beach, raising doubts about compliance with national property laws. Political Stakes for Prime Minister Rama Rama frames the resort as a flagship project to attract foreign investment and accelerate EU integration. He has dismissed the protests as exaggerated and warned that halting the investment would signal hostility to investors. At the same time, EU Council President Antonio Costa reminded Albania that accession depends on meeting EU environmental standards. Outlook: What Comes Next? The anti‑corruption investigation and sustained street mobilisations suggest the project faces an uncertain timeline. If legal challenges succeed, the development could be delayed or re‑scaled, forcing the government to seek alternative tourism strategies that balance economic goals with environmental protection.

Leeds Rhinos End Decade-Long Wait for Home Win Against St Helens

Leeds Rhinos secured a crucial win against St Helens, ending their decade-long wait for a home vict…
The Decade-Long Wait Ends Leeds Rhinos finally ended their decade-long wait for a home victory over their great rivals St Helens to solidify their position at the Super League summit. Match Highlights and Details Incredibly, Leeds had lost nine consecutive home games against the Saints dating back to 2017. This victory was crucial for Leeds, who are now two points clear at the top of the league. The match was thrilling and not decided until the final moments when Maika Sivo scored his 20th league try of the campaign before the outstanding Jake Connor nervelessly converted from the sideline to open up a two-score lead. Key Performances Connor was once again the undisputed star for Leeds. Criminally overlooked for England in last year’s Ashes series, the odds of him featuring in this year’s World Cup must be shortening by the week, with his latest performance hugely influential in everything Leeds did well. The Impact on the League The Saints knew extending their incredible winning run at Headingley would have seen them usurp Leeds at the top, and they may well look back on this as a missed opportunity. They were not at their best but had enough moments of promise to arguably put away a Leeds side somewhat below their best. The Future Outlook This victory not only ended Leeds’ long wait for a home win against St Helens but also reinforced their position at the top of the Super League. With key players like Jake Connor in form, Leeds look strong contenders for the league title.

Marjane Satrapi, Creator of Persepolis, Dies at 56

French-Iranian artist and filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, renowned for her graphic novel Persepolis, has…
The Passing of a Literary IconMarjane Satrapi, the French-Iranian artist, film-maker and graphic novelist whose acclaimed memoir Persepolis helped reshape international perceptions of Iran, has died at the age of 56. In a statement provided to French news agency AFP, relatives said she had "died of sadness" after the death of her husband, the Swedish producer Mattias Ripa, who passed away on 8 April last year.A Life of Art and ResistanceBorn in 1969 in Rasht, Iran, near the Caspian Sea, Satrapi was raised in Tehran by her father, an engineer, and her mother, a dress designer. As a teenager, she left Iran after her parents sent her to Europe to continue her education, hoping to spare her from the restrictions imposed under the Islamic Republic. She eventually settled in France, arriving in 1994 and later becoming a French citizen in 2006.Throughout her life, Satrapi was a vocal opponent of Iran's clerical establishment. In 2000 she published Persepolis, a comic book memoir that became an international publishing phenomenon. It told the story of a rebellious and outspoken young girl navigating the upheaval in Iran after the shah is overthrown in 1979 and the establishment of the Islamic Republic. The Impact of PersepolisThe memoir sold millions of copies, established Satrapi as one of the most widely read Iranian authors in the world, and its success challenged many western assumptions about Iranian society and culture. Satrapi later co-directed the animated film adaptation of Persepolis, which became an international hit and earned her a place in Oscar history as the first woman nominated for the Academy award for best animated feature.Satrapi has described how she initially had little expectation that Persepolis would reach publication. At the time, she was still an arts student in Strasbourg and had relatively limited professional experience in comics. "With Persepolis, I didn't even think I'd find a publisher," she said in a 2020 interview. "I thought I'd make 50 photocopies for my friends to read."A Voice for Iranian WomenSatrapi went on to direct five feature films, including Radioactive (2019), starring Rosamund Pike as the pioneering scientist Marie Curie. After leaving comics for years, in 2024, she returned to the medium, coordinating Woman, Life, Freedom, a collaborative graphic work bringing together 17 Iranian and international comic artists alongside academics and researchers. The book examined the protest movement that emerged after the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman detained in 2022 for allegedly failing to comply with Iran's mandatory headscarf rules.Discussing the book, Satrapi said: "The only thing I can do is cultural work ... This book is a message to the Iranian people to say, listen, you are not alone."A Legacy of Freedom and ExpressionTributes have been paid to Satrapi from across French politics and culture following news of her death. President Emmanuel Macron said Satrapi was "a great artist who turned her Iranian childhood into a universal tale," adding: "With her childlike perspective, her irony, her tenderness, her inner demons, the author created a moving world with which readers identified."French journalist Tristane Banon paid tribute to Satrapi on X, writing: "Marjane ... you won't call me to wish me a happy birthday and 'celebrate those little cheeks that I adore'... and I can't get over it. You were freedom and determination. Courage too. One day, the Iranian people will be free, with you and as much as you."

Lise Davidsen Unleashes Inner Valkyrie in Schubert Masterpiece at Wigmore Hall

Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen delivers a powerful Schubert recital at Wigmore Hall's 125th annive…
The Standout PerformanceWigmore Hall is turning 125, its director John Gilhooly was being granted honorary membership of the Royal Philharmonic Society, and everyone in the audience was shouted a free drink, but there was another cause for celebration on Sunday night. With Lise Davidsen, the world's most in-demand opera singer, giving an all-Schubert recital it was a case of standing room only.Vocal Mastery and Dramatic InterpretationThe Norwegian soprano has a Rolls-Royce instrument, more than capable of filling a house the size of the Metropolitan Opera, but up close she brought other qualities to the table. Her disarming warmth in seemingly off-the-cuff spoken introductions put the audience entirely at ease. Her ability to inhabit a character, as she does on stage, ensured songs such as Gretchen am Spinnrade and Die Junge Nonne were dramatic highlights. The former opened with a throbbing intensity and built to an eruption of volcanic proportions. Her fledgling nun seethed with a scared rapture that verged on the dangerously corporeal.Technical Brilliance and Wagnerian ElementsThe big beasts – Ganymed, for example, with its sly, priapic crescendo, or a turbulent Erlkönig, taken at an RSI-inducing lick by supportive pianist James Baillieu – hit their mark. Her voice has an extraordinary amplitude and a focused core of steel, although when pressed hard in the burgeoning upper register, the odd consonant was inclined to go astray. It was impossible to find fault, however, with Die Allmacht, surely Schubert's most Wagnerian utterance. Nailing her operatic colours to the mast, Davidsen threw caution to the wind, and unleashed her inner Valkyrie.Intimate Moments and Rare GemsIt was the more intimate songs, however, several of them welcome rarities, that brought the greatest pleasure. Du Bist die Ruh, with an imposing final diminuendo, was a masterclass in breath control; the singer's unassuming honesty tapped hidden depths in Mignon's So Lasst Mich Scheinen. Baillieu, her rock throughout, brought a tender flexibility to Goethe's heart-wrenching Nur Wer die Sehnsucht Kennt. Saving the best until last, the recital concluded with a spellbinding account of the quasi-religious Am Tage Aller Seelen. Davidsen's seamless soprano barely rose above a whisper as the voice dispensed balm to the broken-hearted, every word and emotion crystal clear.
