US Judge Questions Trump's Decision to Bar Venezuelan Funds for Maduro's Defense

A US judge has declined to dismiss charges against former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and h…
A United States judge has ruled that he will not dismiss the drug-trafficking and weapons possession charges brought against former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. In a Thursday court hearing, Judge Alvin Hellerstein questioned whether the US government has the right to bar Venezuela from funding Maduro's legal expenses. The hearing was the first for Maduro and his wife since a brief January arraignment, where they pleaded not guilty.Maduro and Flores have sought to have the charges against them thrown out. Hellerstein declined to do so, but he pressed the prosecution on some of the issues Maduro's legal team raised in its petition to dismiss the case. Among them was a decision by the administration of US President Donald Trump to prevent the Venezuelan government from financing Maduro's defence.Federal prosecutors argued that national security reasons prevented the US from allowing such payments. They also pointed to ongoing sanctions against the Venezuelan government. But Hellerstein pushed back against that argument, noting that Trump had eased sanctions against Venezuela since Maduro's abduction on January 3. He also questioned how Maduro might pose a security threat while imprisoned in New York.“The defendant is here. Flores is here. They present no further national security threat,” said Hellerstein. “I see no abiding interest of national security on the right to defend themselves.”Hellerstein emphasised that, in the US, all criminal defendants have the right to a vigorous defence, as part of the US Constitution's Sixth Amendment. Maduro, who led Venezuela from 2013 to 2026, has been charged with four criminal counts, including “narco-terrorism” conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, the possession of machine guns and the conspiracy to possess machine guns and other destructive devices. He and his wife were taken into US custody on January 3, after Trump launched an attack on Venezuela. The Trump administration has framed the military operation as a “law enforcement function”, but experts say it was widely considered illegal under international law, which protects local sovereignty.Trump himself weighed in on the proceedings during a Thursday US Cabinet meeting, hinting that further charges could be brought against Maduro. “He emptied his prisons in Venezuela, emptied his prisons into our country,” Trump said of Maduro, reiterating an unsubstantiated claim. “And I hope that charge will be brought at some point. Because that was a big charge that hasn’t been brought yet. It should be brought.”

Five Guys CEO Gives $1.5m Bonus to Employees After Chaotic Promotion

Five Guys CEO Jerry Murrell gave a $1.5m bonus to employees after a chaotic buy-one-get-one-free pr…
Five Guys' chief executive officer, Jerry Murrell, revealed that he gave a $1.5m bonus to employees of his US-based burger restaurant chain to make up for the chaos caused by a recent promotion. The buy-one-get-one-free offer, which was intended to celebrate the company's 40th anniversary, proved to be much more popular than expected, causing the chain's app to crash and many locations to become overwhelmed.Murrell stated that he gave the bonus because "I didn't want anybody shooting me in the back or anything … because we really screwed it up." The comment was made in an interview with Fortune, where he also joked that he preferred the employees receiving the bonus over his wife getting "a new fur coat."The promotion, which was launched in February, was initially met with intense criticism on social media, prompting Five Guys to apologize and restart the offer for four days. Murrell attributed the chaos to the company's underestimation of the promotion's popularity, stating that "we had no idea that we were going to get that kind of response."Five Guys currently operates 1,900 locations and employs 30,000 people in 28 countries worldwide. The company's CEO since its founding in 1986, Murrell has taken steps to address the backlash and improve customer satisfaction.

Beyond the Brushstrokes: A Musical Explores Monet's Hidden Struggles

"A Mirrored Monet" is a musical that explores Claude Monet's personal struggles beyond his artistic…
As its title suggests, this musical about Claude Monet is full of reflections – fittingly so given the artist's preoccupation with light. In 1916, while struggling to complete The Water Lilies with cataracts, the ageing painter (Jeff Shankley) retreats into memories of his early career. His single-minded younger self (Dean John-Wilson) may be about to change art forever, but looking back, all Monet sees is the personal cost of his drive, particularly his mistreatment of his first wife, muse and mother of his children, Camille (Brooke Bazarian). For a man usually defined by his success, this alternative reflection is refreshing. Also bouncing back at Monet are his peers' struggles, the artistic establishment's dismissal of impressionism, and art's relationship to war and women. So abundant are these reflections, in fact, that Carmel Owen's ambitious book at times becomes a house of mirrors – enticing but with a distractingly split focus. There are certainly strengths, though, not least Libby Todd's set: a floor-to-ceiling jumble of empty canvases, which fill with huge impressionist paintings, vivid washes of coloured light and animated backdrops rendered in flickering brushstrokes. It's an invitation to step inside the artistic movement that favoured feeling over realism.Director Christian Durham has an accomplished cast on his hands. Shankley brings moving introspection (and a brilliant turn as a sniffy Paris salon clerk), while Bazarian and John-Wilson deliver standout singing on a stage full of mighty voices. Their connection, however, is outshone by those between young Monet and his fellow impressionist upstarts Bazille (a lovable Ritesh Manugula) and Renoir (a breezy Sam Peggs), whose moments together are the show's strongest. They fizz with the impatience of young rebellion, and their bickering, which provides much-needed moments of gentle humour, gives way to genuine devotion. An excellent eight-piece orchestra takes on Owen's songs, which lead us aptly through the story's tonal beats – lush strings for young love; jaunty woodwind for bantering artists. But none are distinctive enough to reach the heights of "hum it all the way home".Like Monet's, this musical's ambition sometimes comes at a cost, but it still lands in a place of beauty and deep feeling.

Rapper Jay-Z recently spoke out about a sexual assault lawsuit filed against him and Sean 'Diddy' Combs' in 2024. The lawsuit alleged that both men raped a 13-year-old girl at a party in 2000, which both Jay-Z and Combs vehemently denied. In a recent interview with GQ, Jay-Z explained why he chose to fight the lawsuit rather than settle. He stated, 'I can’t take a settlement – it ain’t in my DNA.' He further emphasized that settling would have been difficult for him and his family, particularly his wife Beyoncé.Jay-Z expressed that he was 'heartbroken' and 'angry' when the allegations first emerged. He described the experience as 'really hard' and mentioned that he hadn't felt 'uncontrollable anger' in a long time. The rapper emphasized the importance of being certain before making such serious accusations against someone. The lawsuit was voluntarily dismissed in February 2025. Jay-Z's attorney, Alex Spiro, previously described the claims as 'provably, demonstrably false' and highlighted an 'impossible timeline.'In addition to discussing the lawsuit, Jay-Z touched on other topics, including the beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake and what he described as a 'right-wing agenda to silence voices in the hip-hop community.' He expressed concern about the negative impact of such conflicts on social media and the involvement of people's families.Jay-Z also reflected on 30 years since the release of his debut album Reasonable Doubt, which he will celebrate with two shows at New York's Yankee Stadium in July.

Football Star Jorginho Sparks Social Media Firestorm Against Singer Chappell Roan

Footballer Jorginho publicly criticized singer Chappell Roan after claiming her security guard spok…
In an unexpected turn of events that captured social media attention over the weekend, footballer Jorginho found himself in a public dispute with American pop singer Chappell Roan. The former Chelsea and current Flamengo midfielder took to social media to accuse Roan's security guard of speaking "in an extremely aggressive manner" to his stepdaughter and wife at a São Paulo hotel.Jorginho, whose stepdaughter happens to be actress Jude Law's daughter, claimed that his stepdaughter had merely smiled at Roan while walking past the singer's table during breakfast. Without his fans, "you would be nothing," Jorginho stated in a departure from his typically less confrontational public persona. In response, Roan posted a video denying the allegations and clarifying that the security guard in question was not her personal security. The singer explained she was simply sitting at breakfast when the incident allegedly occurred and expressed regret if the mother and child felt uncomfortable. "I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children – that is crazy," Roan stated in the video, which was recorded while she was lying in bed.The controversy quickly escalated when Eduardo Cavaliere, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, announced a ban on Roan performing at the city's annual Todo Mundo festival. "As long as I'm in charge of our city – this young lady @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo no Rio!" he declared, while simultaneously inviting Jorginho's stepdaughter as a guest of honor.Quote of the Day came from Pep Guardiola following Manchester City's recent triumph: "I wanted another yellow card, that was the target. If I cannot celebrate against that team with the way we are playing, then when? Emotions are related to the way we are playing. Give me another yellow card, I'm not yet artificial intelligence. I'm a human being and I want to celebrate."

The Last Blossom: A Poignant Anime Exploring Redemption and Human Conscience

The Last Blossom is a contemplative anime film that tells the story of an elderly former yakuza, Ak…
The Last Blossom, directed by Baku Kinoshita and written by Kazuya Konomoto, is a quiet, contemplative anime feature that rarely gets a theatrical release. The film opens in a lonely prison cell, where the elderly former yakuza Akutsu finds an unexpected confidant in a talking balsam flower.Over the course of one sleepless night, Akutsu's life story unfolds in bursts. Thirty years prior, another balsam flower grows in the back yard of Akutsu's humble house, which he shares with Nana and her baby son, Kensuke. The relationship between the taciturn man and the bubbly young woman is seemingly platonic; Kensuke is not his son. Yet there are hints of romantic attraction; they share bowls of piping hot ramen noodles, play endless rounds of Reversi, and join in harmonising the Ben E King classic Stand By Me.In contrast to this alternative nuclear family, the yakuza world is still strictly traditional, revolving around machismo and codes of brotherhood. When Kensuke is diagnosed with a heart condition, Akutsu is lured into a criminal plot, which leads to his incarceration. Though encompassing much bloodshed and even a hidden treasure subplot, The Last Blossom is most moving as an exploration of human conscience, where a capacity for violence and kindness coexist. The paradox is reminiscent of Shōhei Imamura’s Palme d’Or winner The Eel, starring Koji Yakusho as a wife-murderer who shelters a pregnant woman after his prison release. With his unassuming buzzcut, in stark contrast to his flamboyant yakuza peers, Akutsu bears a striking resemblance to Yakusho’s protagonist. Though a minor work compared to Imamura’s, The Last Blossom similarly questions conventional notions of justice, and the impossibility of weighing one’s good and bad deeds. The Last Blossom is in UK and Irish cinemas from 27 March, and in Australian cinemas from 23 April.

American musician Chappell Roan has responded to criticism from former Chelsea footballer Jorginho after he accused her security guard of being aggressive towards his stepdaughter and wife at a hotel in Brazil.Jorginho, 34, claimed that his 11-year-old stepdaughter was left crying after Roan's security guard spoke to her and his wife in an aggressive manner when they encountered Roan at a hotel in São Paulo. He accused Roan of not appreciating her fans, stating that they had been staying in the same hotel and his stepdaughter had simply smiled at Roan before walking back to her mother. In response, Roan posted a video on Instagram, explaining that she had not instructed her security guard to approach Jorginho's stepdaughter and wife. She expressed sadness over the incident, saying that the stepdaughter "did not deserve that" and emphasized that she values her fans and does not hate children or people who admire her music. The incident sparked online criticism of Roan, including from the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere, who suggested that Roan was not welcome to perform at the city's annual Todo Mundo no Rio music festival. This criticism comes after Roan previously spoke out against "entitled" fans and their "creepy" behavior in a series of TikToks.
