US Aggression in Iran Sparks Global Economic Chaos and Exposes Shift in US Role

The US conflict with Iran has triggered significant economic disruption worldwide, particularly in …
The ongoing conflict in Iran has sent shockwaves through global energy markets, with economies in Asia being hit particularly hard. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for oil and gas shipments, has led to a 90% collapse in traffic through its waters. This has resulted in energy prices surging, affecting countries such as India, Nepal, and the Philippines.India has redirected liquefied gas supplies to households, limiting them to the plastics industry, while Nepal has rationed gas and the Philippines has trimmed the government workweek to four days. Bangladesh has closed universities and rationed fuel, highlighting the widespread impact of the conflict. The US economy has shown relative resilience, with the S&P; 500 index losing only 5% since the start of the conflict. This is attributed to the country's abundance of domestic natural gas, which satisfies about 36% of its energy needs and insulates it from international price fluctuations. However, this has led to accusations that the US is recklessly spreading havoc globally while suffering relatively little harm itself. The tariffs imposed by the US have also had far-reaching consequences, with economists concluding that US consumers and businesses are paying the majority of the costs. The International Monetary Fund has revised its growth forecasts, noting that the US economy has emerged largely unscathed, while prospects for economic growth in other countries have weakened. The World Trade Organization has warned that persistently high energy prices will slow merchandise trade growth and have a lopsided impact on growth, with North America potentially seeing a boost, while Europe and Asia are likely to be negatively affected. The conflict has also disrupted the oil and gas economy, with countries like Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan facing a drop in remittances from their citizens working in Gulf countries. Furthermore, the environmental impact of the conflict has been significant, with interest in coal being reinvigorated in Asia as a result of the energy crisis. The US's actions have raised concerns about its reliability as a partner in maintaining international stability, with erstwhile allies forced to accept that Trump's America is now a source of global uncertainty. The US's belligerence is unlikely to end soon, with tens of millions of Americans motivated by contempt for the rest of the world and a desire to assert US dominance.

Small Lifestyle Changes Found to Significantly Reduce Heart Attack Risk

A recent study has found that making small changes to daily habits, such as sleeping 11 minutes mor…
A recent study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology has revealed that small changes to daily habits can have a significant impact on cardiovascular health. The research, conducted by experts from Australia, Chile, and Brazil, examined data on more than 53,000 middle-aged UK adults taking part in the Biobank study. The study found that sleeping for 11 minutes more each night, doing 4.5 additional minutes of brisk walking, and eating an extra 50g of vegetables each day can reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes, by about 10%. These small behavior changes were found to be more "achievable and sustainable" compared to attempting major changes in a single behavior.According to the study, the "optimal" way to avoid cardiovascular incidents includes getting eight to nine hours of sleep each night, a good diet, and a minimum of 42 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. Combining these measures leads to a 57% lower risk of heart attacks and strokes.Dr. Nicholas Koemel, the study's lead author, noted that "making a few small, combined changes is likely more achievable and sustainable for most people when compared with attempting major changes in a single behavior." He encouraged people to make small changes to their daily routine, as they can have a surprisingly large positive impact on cardiovascular health.Prof Emmanuel Stamatakis, a senior author of the study, plans to build on these findings to develop new digital tools that support people in making positive lifestyle changes and establishing sustained healthy habits.Commenting on the study, Emily McGrath, a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said that "small tweaks – like getting a little more sleep, adding a few extra minutes of activity to your day or eating a bit more veg – can work together to have a meaningful positive impact on your heart health."

England Coach McCullum Ordered to Mend County Ties After Ashes Review

Brendon McCullum has been told to improve relations with counties to continue as England coach afte…
England coach Brendon McCullum has been given the green light to continue his role despite the team's dismal 4-1 Ashes defeat. However, he has been urged to strengthen ties with county teams to enhance collaboration and communication. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will confirm McCullum's continuation on Monday, following a comprehensive review of the Ashes series. As part of the review, McCullum has agreed to adopt a more rigorous approach to training and preparation, which includes measures like a midnight curfew during the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.A key area of focus for McCullum is to build better relationships with counties, many of which feel marginalized by his selection approach. The ECB's managing director of men's cricket, Rob Key, has taken initial steps by inviting county directors of cricket to a meeting at Lord's to discuss selection strategies. The appointment of a new national selector to replace Luke Wright, who stepped down for personal reasons, is also underway. One potential solution being considered is the introduction of liaison officers from counties to facilitate regular discussions on selection with Key, McCullum, and the new selector.Surrey head coach Gareth Batty recently highlighted concerns that the pathway between county and international cricket had become 'misted over', despite several Surrey players being part of the Ashes tour and England's T20 World Cup squad.

Pygmalion's Johannes-Passion: A Theatrical Masterpiece

A review of Pygmalion's new recording of Bach's St John Passion, highlighting the ensemble's razor-…
Bach's St John Passion is a masterpiece that comes close to being an opera, and this new recording by Pygmalion, conducted by Raphaël Pichon, brings out its theatrical qualities in spades. The ensemble's performance is razor-sharp throughout, with a vigorous engagement with the reflective chorale texts. The St John Passion relies on the Evangelist to narrate the bulk of the story, and Pichon is fortunate in having Julien Prégardien on tenor vocals. Prégardien's voice rises to an outraged shriek as he declares Barrabas a murderer, and his achingly florid recall of Peter's bitter tears is noteworthy. The soloists are also impressive, with Huw Montague Rendall bringing tonal richness and unswerving gravitas to the role of Jesus, and Christian Immler's agitated Pilate swinging back and forth like a tormented weathervane. Ying Fang's purity and Lucile Richardot's otherworldliness round off one of the most theatrical St Johns in the catalogue.
