Bangladesh Bus Accident: 24 Dead as Vehicle Plunges into Padma River

A bus carrying 40 passengers lost control and plunged into the Padma River in central Bangladesh, r…
A devastating bus accident occurred in central Bangladesh on Wednesday, resulting in at least 24 fatalities. The bus, which was carrying 40 passengers, lost control while approaching a ferry at Daulatdia in Rajbari district, about 100km from Dhaka. The bus sank nearly 9 metres into the river, making rescue efforts challenging. Rescuers recovered 22 bodies from inside the submerged bus, including five children, 11 women, and six men. Two more women died later after being rescued.Search and rescue efforts were led by four fire service units and 10 divers, supported by the army, police, coastguard, and local authorities. Officials fear that more passengers may still be missing. The accident highlights the poor road safety record in Bangladesh, where hundreds of people die each year in road and ferry accidents. The World Health Organization estimates that over 31,500 traffic-related deaths occur annually, translating to more than 85 deaths per day in the country of 170 million people.Deadly crashes are relatively common in Bangladesh due to poor roads, badly maintained vehicles, and reckless driving. The country's Road Safety Foundation reported over 200 deaths during the recent Eid holidays, including a train-bus collision that killed 12 people.

Russia and US Hold Talks Amidst Tensions Over Ukraine and Iran

A Russian delegation has met with US counterparts in a bid to revive bilateral engagement, despite …
A high-stakes diplomatic effort is underway as a delegation of Russian officials has arrived in the United States for meetings with their American counterparts. This visit, which began on Thursday, marks a significant development in the strained relations between Moscow and Washington, particularly over Moscow's ongoing war in Ukraine.Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed optimism about the talks, stating, 'We hope that these first tentative steps will, of course, make their contribution to the further revival of our bilateral engagement.' President Vladimir Putin has set the main directives for the trip and will be thoroughly briefed on the meeting. The visit occurs against the backdrop of US-brokered talks to end the war in Ukraine, which are currently in a state of limbo. Despite several rounds of negotiations since US President Joe Biden's administration took office, a deadlock persists, with the Kremlin ruling out compromises to halt its military campaign.Russia, a key ally of Iran, has been accused by Western intelligence officials of supporting the Iranian government as it faces a war launched by the US and Israel. A recent report alleged that Russia was close to completing a shipment of drones to Iran, which Moscow has vehemently denied, calling such claims 'lies being spread by the media.'In a related development, Russia has intensified its military actions in Ukraine, carrying out one of the largest aerial attacks since the start of the war, launching 948 drones in 24 hours. This escalation has prompted Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to appeal for air defence munitions from allies, warning of a potential deficit in missiles while Washington focuses on the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

US Markets Plummet as US-Israel Conflict with Iran Sparks Economic Concerns

US markets experienced their largest slump since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran, with the…
US markets witnessed a significant downturn on Thursday, marking their biggest slump since the onset of the US-Israel war with Iran. The Dow closed 450 points down, while the S&P 500 dipped 1.7%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 2.3%, plunging into correction territory, which occurs when an index falls at least 10% below its most recent peak. The conflict has led to a surge in oil prices, reaching levels not seen since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. At the end of the day on Thursday, Brent crude oil, the global benchmark, was about $107 a barrel, while US crude hit $93 a barrel. Average US gas prices at the pump reached $3.98 a gallon, according to AAA. Despite the soaring prices, Donald Trump said that oil prices “have not gone up as much as I thought” during a cabinet meeting on Thursday. He predicted that prices would “come back down to where it was, and probably lower,” and that the impact on the stock market would reverse once the conflict ends. Markets have been growing weary of Trump's mixed signals on the US's stance in negotiations with Iran. Stocks dipped on Thursday morning after Trump posted a warning to Iranian negotiators that they “better get serious, before it’s too late.” However, later in the morning, Trump said that there were “very substantial talks” happening with Iran and that the country allowed 10 oil tankers to pass the blocked strait of Hormuz. The White House announced it will extend a pause on Iranian energy infrastructure strikes by 10 days, until 6 April. A new report estimates US inflation will average 4.2% this year, compared with an average of about 2.6% in 2025, according to the Organization for Economic and Cooperation and Development (OECD). The increase in inflation reverses what was expected to be strong growth for the global economy before the conflict began.

Google Warns of Quantum Computer Threat to Encrypted Systems by 2029

Google has issued a warning that quantum computers could potentially break most existing encryption systems by 2029, posing a significant threat to current cryptographic standards. The tech giant is urging banks, governments, and technology providers to prepare for this emerging threat. In a blog post, Google stated that the encryption currently used to keep information confidential and secure could easily be broken by a large-scale quantum computer in the coming years. The company, owned by Alphabet, emphasized the need for post-quantum cryptography migration to protect sensitive data. While quantum computers are still a nascent technology, Google, Microsoft, and universities across the UK and the US are actively building systems that harness the physics of quantum mechanics to perform extremely sophisticated mathematical calculations. However, constructing a powerful quantum computer with hundreds of thousands or even millions of stable qubits remains a significant technological challenge.Leonie Mueck, formerly the chief product officer of Riverlane, a Cambridge-based quantum startup, noted that Google's statement does not necessarily mean a working quantum computer capable of breaking encryption will definitely exist by 2029. Most timelines for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer range from the 2030s to the 2050s.Despite this, governments and organizations are already preparing for the eventuality that data stored to today's encryption standards would be exposed when the technology sufficiently advances. The UK's cybersecurity agency, the National Cyber Security Centre, has urged organizations to guard their systems against quantum hackers by 2035.Google's timeline suggests that engineering teams across the technology industry should consider measures to protect sensitive data by migrating to more advanced encryption systems now. Certain kinds of attacks predicated on the future availability of quantum decryption – “store now, decrypt later” – may currently be being deployed across the field.

PSG's Ligue 1 Match Against Lens Postponed to Aid Champions League Preparation

Paris Saint-Germain's highly anticipated visit to Lens in Ligue 1 has been postponed to May 13, allowing the team more time to focus on their upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool. The match, initially scheduled for April 11, could have significant implications for the Ligue 1 title race, with PSG currently leading Lens by a single point. The decision to reschedule the match has been met with some resistance from Lens, who expressed concerns that the French league is being treated as an adjustment variable to accommodate the European imperatives of certain teams. The Ligue de Football Professionnel justified the move by citing the strategic goal of helping France maintain its fifth place in the UEFA coefficient rankings, which would secure four places in the Champions League.PSG is set to face Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-final on April 8 at the Parc de Princes, with the second leg taking place at Anfield six days later. This extra time could prove crucial for PSG as they look to advance in the competition. In addition to the PSG-Lens match, Strasbourg's visit to Brest on April 12 has also been rescheduled to May 13, as Strasbourg prepares for their Europa Conference League last-eight games against Mainz.

HBO Max Unveils Gripping British True-Crime Docudrama 'Boom Box: Beats and Betrayal'

The UK launch of HBO Max brings a British true-crime docudrama 'Boom Box: Beats and Betrayal', expl…
The UK launch of HBO Max has introduced a distinctly British true-crime docudrama, 'Boom Box: Beats and Betrayal', which tells the astonishing tale of a record shop and recording studio in Edmonton, north London. The studio, known as Boom Box, was initially set up to provide a safe space for teenagers involved in petty crime, but it unbeknownstingly became a hotbed of gang-related activity. The series reveals that the people these teenagers were getting involved with were not criminals, but undercover police officers who had targeted the area after a spate of murders in 2008. As the four episodes unfold, the ethics of the police operation are questioned by those who feel they were ensnared and manipulated to commit serious crimes they would never have thought about otherwise. The documentary uses dramatic reconstructions contrasted with interviews, and even features the actors who play the Boom Box teens talking to the actors who portray them. The studio was equipped with top-of-the-range equipment, which kids could use for just £15 an hour, giving it a 'Dr Dre vibe' according to one of the teens, Junior. The operation, which cost several hundred thousand pounds, raises questions about the fairness and impact of the police actions. While some officers argue they were making the operation look legitimate while pushing for information on existing criminal activity, others, including a lawyer for two of the men, argue that there was an abuse of process by the police.A judge later deemed the police actions lawful, but the series leaves viewers questioning the morality and effectiveness of the operation. The documentary is co-produced by Rogan Productions, known for diverse and ambitious documentaries, and is centered around the kids whose lives were forever altered by their time at Boom Box.The series is now available on HBO Max, offering a thought-provoking look into the complexities of the situation and the lasting impact on the individuals involved.

Church Leaders Criticize GB News Owner Sir Paul Marshall Over Climate Stance

Sir Paul Marshall, the co-owner of GB News and a self-described 'committed' Christian, has been criticized by a group of 100 church leaders over the TV channel's attacks on climate science and action. The leaders, including former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, argue that Marshall's statements on climate change are misleading and that his hedge fund's £1.8bn investments in fossil fuels present a conflict of interest.Marshall has stated that the UK has been infected by 'climate derangement syndrome' and that efforts to cut planet-heating emissions are 'impoverishing people.' In response, the church leaders emphasized that 100% of global heating since 1950 has been caused by human emissions and activities, according to the world's climate scientists. They also noted that decarbonization is a huge growth opportunity that will save trillions of dollars in the long term. The leaders, in an open letter, urged Marshall to be transparent about any personal conflicts of interest and to declare his financial interests in fossil fuels. They cited research that found GB News broadcast 953 attacks on climate science and climate action in the period immediately before and after the 2024 general election.Marshall responded that 'the Gospel entreats us to look after the vulnerable' but argued that pursuing an 'ideological' net zero policy was 'a path of unilateral economic disarmament and self-harm.' He also stated that he was not involved in the editorial decisions of GB News, which has lost £131m since its launch in 2021.The Christian leaders' criticism of Marshall and GB News highlights the ongoing debate over climate change and the role of media outlets in shaping public discourse on the issue. As more than 100 countries have net zero policies and the UK's net zero economy grew by 10% in 2024, the pressure on media outlets to provide accurate and responsible reporting on climate issues continues to grow.

OpenAI Scraps AI Video App Sora Amid Deepfake Concerns and Partnership Fallout

OpenAI is discontinuing its AI video app Sora due to concerns over deepfakes and nonconsensual cont…
OpenAI has announced the shutdown of its social media app Sora, which allowed users to share short-form videos generated by artificial intelligence. The decision comes amid growing concerns over the potential for deepfakes and nonconsensual content. The app, launched in September, aimed to capture the attention and advertising dollars of short-form video platforms like TikTok and Instagram. However, advocacy groups, academics, and experts raised alarms about the dangers of AI-generated videos, leading to proliferation of realistic deepfakes and "AI slop".OpenAI was forced to crack down on AI creations of public figures, including Michael Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr, and Mister Rogers, doing outlandish things, after an outcry from family estates and an actors' union. The shutdown affects a $1 billion deal between OpenAI and Disney, which was announced three months ago. The deal included Disney investing $1 billion in OpenAI and lending over 200 of its iconic characters for use in short, AI-generated videos. However, the transaction never closed, and no money changed hands.Disney stated that it respects OpenAI's decision to exit the video generation business and shift priorities elsewhere. The abrupt cancellation of Sora illustrates the messy process of streamlining as OpenAI prepares for a potential stock market debut later this year.

NASA Shifts Focus to Lunar Surface Base and Nuclear-Powered Mars Spacecraft

NASA has announced a major overhaul of its moon and Mars strategy, committing $20bn to build a base…
NASA has unveiled a significant shift in its moon and Mars strategy, allocating $20bn over the next seven years to construct a base on the moon's surface. This move comes as part of a broader overhaul of NASA's long-term Moon-to-Mars strategy, aimed at supporting long-term human presence on the lunar surface.NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman outlined the changes, which include increasing robotic missions to the moon and laying the groundwork for nuclear power on the lunar surface. The agency plans to repurpose some components of the Lunar Gateway station for use on the moon's surface instead of building the station in lunar orbit. The planned moon base will be supported by robotic missions that will help prepare the site, test technologies, and begin building infrastructure before astronauts return later this decade. Additionally, NASA disclosed plans to launch a spacecraft called Space Reactor 1 Freedom before the end of 2028, a mission designed to demonstrate nuclear electric propulsion in deep space on the way to Mars. The spacecraft will deliver helicopters on Mars, similar to the Ingenuity robotic test helicopter that flew with NASA's Perseverance rover. This step aims to move nuclear propulsion technology from laboratory testing to operational space missions. The changes to NASA's flagship Artemis programme are reshaping billions of dollars' worth of contracts and come as the United States faces growing competition from China, which is aiming to land astronauts on the moon by 2030.
