The Gamification of Payphones: How Fans Are Rediscovering Australia's Orange Boxes

A game called PayphoneGo has been created to encourage people to explore and interact with payphone…
The Rise of PayphoneGo A game called PayphoneGo has been created to encourage people to explore and interact with payphones across Australia. The game, developed by 19-year-old Kris Norris, assigns players a nine-digit ID, which they enter after calling the website's number from a payphone, allowing them to accrue points and leave voicemails. The Details of PayphoneGo Players can earn points by visiting payphones, with the first person to call from a payphone receiving 20 points and the ability to leave a voicemail. The game has attracted a cult following online, with over 1,000 users registered to play Payphone Tag, a 'real-world territory capture game'. The Impact of Free Calls on Payphone Usage Since mid-2021, calls on Telstra payphones have been free, leading to a significant increase in usage. Telstra's payphone product owner, Pete Manwaring, reports that more than 100m calls have been made since fees were scrapped, with usage tripling. In Sydney alone, 4m calls were made from 1,918 payphones in the past year. The Continued Importance of Payphones Despite the rise of smartphones, payphones remain an essential service in Australia. About 37% of calls are to emergency services, helplines, and government support numbers, while another 33% go to utilities. Associate Prof Mark Gregory from RMIT's school of engineering argues that payphones should be reinstalled in 'black spots' and all payphones should offer free wifi. The Future of Payphones As payphones continue to decline, games like PayphoneGo are helping to preserve their relevance. With 14,000 payphones remaining across Australia, it's clear that they still hold a special place in the country's culture and infrastructure.

Nike Advises Federations to Steam World Cup Jerseys to Fix Shoulder Seam Issue

Nike has instructed federations to steam World Cup jerseys to fix a shoulder seam issue that caused…
The Shoulder Seam Issue Nike's World Cup kits, which debuted in March 2026, featured an unsightly bulge along the shoulder seam, noticeable on players like France's Kylian Mbappé. The issue was acknowledged by Nike, which stated that "the overall aesthetic is not where it needs to be." Nike's Solution: Steam the Jerseys Instead of altering the shirts, Nike provided instructions to member federations on how to care for the jerseys: wash them before wearing and steam the shoulder seams. This solution appears to have partially addressed the issue, as the problem was less noticeable during May and June friendlies. The Design Process Nike boasted about the advanced design process used to create the shirts, including "computational design" and a "highly specialized, stitch-specific knitting process" to help athletes stay cool. The process was driven by performance data and incorporated elements of AI. The Impact on Fans While the issue has been partially resolved for players, fans in the stands may still be affected until they purchase a steamer. The kits have been popular among fans, particularly those of the United States, who will wear a red-and-white, flag-themed top against Paraguay. The Future Outlook This rare miss for Nike highlights the challenges of balancing design innovation with practical considerations. As the World Cup begins, it remains to be seen how the jerseys will perform and whether Nike will need to revisit their design process in the future.

US Soccer’s Quest for World Cup Glory: Pochettino’s Challenge and What Success Means

Mauricio Pochettino, on a record $6 million‑a‑year deal, addressed fans at an open training session…
Mauricio Pochettino paused before a crowd of 5,500 at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, California, to remind everyone that the United States is hosting a World Cup that demands more than just participation. The opening training session set the tone for a tournament where the question "what is enough?" looms over players, coaches and a nation eager to rewrite its soccer narrative. The Opening Training Session in Irvine Highlights US AmbitionsThe Argentine coach, speaking in a Rioplatense‑accented English, joked about faulty microphones before rallying fans with a chant of "USA!" The event, attended by thousands who won a lottery for tickets, showcased a blend of optimism and nervous energy as the team prepared to face a challenging group featuring Paraguay, Australia and Turkey.Financial Stakes: $6 million Annual Contract and Commercial ExpectationsPochettino arrived on a $6 million‑per‑year contract—the largest outlay for a coach in US Soccer history—signaling the federation’s willingness to invest heavily in a historic World Cup run. Over his 22‑month tenure the team has recorded 15 wins, 10 losses and one draw, a mixed ledger that underscores the high‑risk, high‑reward nature of the financial commitment.Broader Impact: Shaping American Soccer Culture and Market PotentialSuccess on the world stage could trigger a cascade of benefits: increased television viewership, a surge in grassroots participation, and a flood of commercial dollars that might finally rival baseball, basketball and American football. With a population of nearly 400 million, including 80 million Latino fans who already possess a "football DNA," the tournament offers a rare chance to embed soccer into the mainstream American sports fabric.Looking Ahead: Scenarios for the US Team in 2026 and BeyondAnalysts warn that the US could exit at the group stage or bow out in the first knockout round, yet Pochettino and star Christian Pulisic maintain that the squad can compete with elite nations. A quarter‑final run—matching the 2002 achievement—would likely boost the sport’s credibility, while a deeper run could cement soccer as a permanent fixture in the national consciousness. The next weeks will reveal whether the team can translate ambition into results that satisfy both fans and the broader cultural expectations.

Pool App Transforms Screenshots into Organized Digital Content

The new app Pool helps users organize their screenshots into categories and uses AI to link them to…
The Problem with Digital Clutter For years, smartphone users have struggled with digital clutter in their Camera Rolls. Saved screenshots of recipes, fashion inspiration, travel ideas, and more often get lost in the sea of photos. A new app called Pool aims to change that by turning screenshots into organized, actionable content. How Pool Works Users grant Pool access to their photos, which are then categorized into 'pools' based on the content. Pool uses AI to track down the original link associated with a screenshot, such as a product link or recipe. The app also treats screenshots like memories, prioritizing some over others based on relevance and time. The Founders' Vision Co-founders Maxime Junique and Piet Terheyden created Pool to solve their own problem of losing track of screenshots. They believe that AI can help make sense of personal, unstructured datasets like screenshots. The Future of Pool The founders plan to expand Pool into a second app that operates as a personal assistant, leveraging agentic AI. Pool is currently available as a free download on iOS. The Funding Pool previously raised a pre-seed round of just over $2 million from investors including General Catalyst, Kima Ventures, and Source Ventures.

The Guardian has published a ranked list of Kathleen Turner’s 20 most memorable films, spanning fro…
The Guardian’s latest feature ranks Kathleen Turner’s filmography from 1984 to 2022, presenting a curated top‑20 that showcases the actress’s shifting on‑screen personas and the industry’s changing appetite for her talent. The Guardian’s Curated Countdown of Turner’s Career Highlights20 titles evaluated, ranging from early comedies to recent indie dramas.Rankings are based on a mix of critical reception, cultural impact, and Turner’s performance nuances.Films include Marley & Me (2008), The Estate (2022), Monster House (2006), and The Virgin Suicides (1999).Box‑Office and Critical Reception of the Top PicksWhile many of Turner’s early blockbusters such as Romancing the Stone (not listed) earned multi‑million dollar grosses, the Guardian’s list leans toward titles that earned critical acclaim or cult status. For example, Marley & Me grossed over $140 million worldwide, whereas The Virgin Suicides garnered a modest $10 million but secured a lasting auteur reputation.Turner’s Evolving On‑Screen Persona Across the DecadesThe rankings illustrate a clear trajectory: early roles emphasized sharp wit and physical comedy, mid‑career choices highlighted darker, more complex characters, and later entries show Turner embracing meta‑commentary and voice work. Notable shifts include the “drill‑sergeant” dog‑trainer in Marley & Me and the melancholic mother in The Virgin Suicides. What the List Reveals About Late‑Career Opportunities for Veteran ActorsEntries such as The Estate (2022) and Switching Channels (1988) demonstrate that seasoned performers can still secure roles that blend humor with pathos, often in ensemble casts that benefit from their experience. The Guardian’s commentary suggests a growing industry respect for veteran talent in both lead and supporting capacities.Future Re‑Assessments and Potential RediscoveriesAs streaming platforms revive older titles, several lower‑ranked films—like A Breed Apart (1984) and Switching Channels (1988)—may experience renewed viewership, prompting critics to re‑evaluate Turner’s contributions beyond the marquee hits. The list therefore serves as both a retrospective and a guide for upcoming retrospectives.

Meet Archie McParland: The New Saints and England Rugby Star

Archie McParland, the 21-year-old Northampton scrum-half, is on the verge of a full England debut. …
The Rise of Archie McParland Plenty of aspiring young players will relate to how Archie McParland once felt. Northampton’s fast-emerging scrum-half, on the verge of a full England debut this summer, possessed the requisite talent but not always the freedom of expression to maximise it. Perfectionists can often be like that, so averse to making the slightest mistake they end up holding themselves back. Breaking Through Self-Doubt Eventually there is a choice to be made: abandon all inner doubt and trust in his ability or stay frustratingly trapped in never never land. The turning point for McParland arrived just after Christmas in Bath when he starred for Saints in a pivotal league fixture at the Recreation Ground having been specifically encouraged by his coaches to follow his gut instinct. “That was the moment,” he says now. “I’d been training well but struggling to put it on to the pitch. In that game we felt quite free to play our game and it all worked out. Since then I’ve been able to show my game more and more.” A Standout Performance In what has been an eye-catching personal season for the 21-year-old there was another prime example at Bath in the sixth minute of the Champions Cup quarter-final in April. Clean off-the-top ball, a deft lob by Rory Hutchinson, a glorious one-handed flick on by McParland to Fin Smith and great support from Tommy Freeman and Fraser Dingwall made for the slickest of first-phase strike plays. Saints lost a thrilling contest 43-41 but for a while their attacking game was untouchable. McParland's Ambitions and Influences McParland also comes from a family accustomed to operating under pressure. His mother Emma is a maxillofacial surgeon at Glan Clwyd hospital near Rhyl specialising in skin cancer of the face and neck and jaw deformities. But despite growing up in north Wales – he first played rugby at Ruthin RFC at the age of five – it was always an England cap he craved. “As soon as I knew what England rugby was I wanted to play for them. To get the call up (to England’s training squad) was an amazing feeling ... I rang my parents straight afterwards and they were over the moon for me.” Future Outlook On the contrary, the evidence strongly points to a deceptively smart operator with a constant thirst for self-improvement. Among other opponents he has been closely studying Bordeaux’s scrum-half and captain, Maxime Lucu, keen to emulate the way the French international artfully controls the tempo of a game and contributes even when he does not have the ball. “Watching Lucu the thing that shouts out to me is his defensive leadership. It’s crazy how much he’s involved in the defensive system and he also leads through his actions. I’d love to put that in my game but equally I want to show my own strengths.

DoorDash Launches AI Chatbot for Conversational Food and Grocery Ordering

DoorDash has introduced 'Ask DoorDash,' an AI-powered chatbot that enables users to order food and …
DoorDash's AI-Powered Ordering Revolution DoorDash announced on Thursday the launch of "Ask DoorDash," an innovative AI chatbot that transforms how users interact with the platform. The new feature allows customers to order food and groceries using natural language prompts and photos, moving away from traditional menu scrolling to a more conversational shopping experience. How Ask DoorDash Works The AI chatbot enables users to search for what they're looking for in their own words. Whether you're in the mood for something specific, have a recipe link to match, or need help finding a reservation, Ask DoorDash understands natural language queries. For grocery shopping, users can simply share a photo from a cookbook, a picture of their grocery list, or describe a recipe, and the app will build a complete cart with appropriate quantities. The system even prompts users to check if they already have staples like sugar and butter to prevent duplicate purchases. For food ordering, users can request "a filling dinner for a family of 4," and the app will recommend suitable restaurants with personalized explanations. The results can be further refined with specific criteria like "kid-friendly vegetarian spots with mild options." Once a restaurant is selected, the chatbot can build a cart based on dietary preferences, budget, group size, or past order history. The chatbot also handles reservations, allowing users to request "a table for two downtown for a date-night dinner around 8 PM" and then refine the search for something more intimate if needed. Industry-Wide AI Integration DoorDash's new feature reflects a broader trend in the food delivery and grocery sectors, where companies are leveraging AI to create more personalized and conversational shopping experiences. This move positions DoorDash in direct competition with other tech giants investing in AI assistants for everyday tasks. Earlier this year, Uber Eats launched an AI-powered "Cart Assistant," while Instacart has implemented an AI shopping assistant that grocers can offer to their customers. These developments indicate that AI is becoming a standard component of the digital shopping landscape, with companies racing to make their interfaces more intuitive and user-friendly. Future of AI in Food Delivery As AI technology continues to advance, we can expect food delivery platforms to become even more sophisticated in understanding user preferences and needs. The introduction of conversational AI like Ask DoorDash represents just the beginning of how machine learning will transform the food and grocery ordering experience. DoorDash's chatbot is currently rolling out on iOS in select regions for restaurant search and grocery shopping, as well as within DoorDash Reservations. The company plans to expand the feature to more users across the U.S. in the coming weeks, suggesting that this AI-powered approach will become a central part of the DoorDash experience in the near future.
