The Radical Tax Overhaul to Solve London's Housing Crisis The Centre for London has proposed a radical overhaul of London's property taxation, suggesting the scrapping of Stamp Duty and Council Tax in favor of a Proportional Property Tax (PPT). This proposal aims to address widening inequality, release housing stock, and fund the construction of 106,000 new social homes over the next decade. A Radical Shift in London's Taxation Model The core of the proposal involves replacing the current Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) and the outdated Council Tax system with a new annual property wealth tax. The new Proportional Property Tax (PPT) would be calculated as a percentage of a home's value, with rates increasing for higher-value properties. Base Rate: 0.39% on properties up to £800,000. Incremental Charges: Additional 0.01% for homes up to £999,999, and 0.02% for every £200,000 over £1m (capped at 0.82% for properties worth £5m). Under this model, a £500,000 home in Greenwich would pay £1,950 annually, saving the owner over £15,000 in the first 10 years compared to current taxes. Conversely, a £5m home in Westminster would pay £41,000 annually, saving £86,792 over a decade. Quantifying the Housing Inequality Gap The report highlights a stark disparity in space utilization and affordability. Despite London having more housing per person than 20 years ago, inequality has widened significantly. Floor Space Growth: Average floor space rose by 30% between 2004 and 2023. Income Disparity: Top 20% of homeowners saw a 27% rise in space, while the bottom 40% saw only a 6% rise. Price-to-Earnings: House prices are now 12 times earnings, up from 7 times in the early 2000s. The crisis is further evidenced by the fact that homelessness costs £5.5m daily and a third of children live in poverty after housing costs. Economic Implications for Renters and First-Time Buyers The proposed tax shift aims to alleviate the crushing financial burden on younger generations and renters. By removing Stamp Duty on primary residences, the thinktank estimates an extra 79,000 homes could be released annually as owners move. Renter Savings: Private renters would no longer pay Council Tax, saving more than £1,890 per year. First-Time Buyer Savings: Buyers would save £8,593 across five years of ownership. Deposit Support: The policy aims to help renters save for a deposit, which currently averages £150,000 without family assistance. The Future of London's Housing Market Rob Anderson, the director of research at the Centre for London, argues that the crisis cannot be solved by simply "building more homes." He emphasizes that the current system incentivizes holding onto property rather than downsizing or releasing stock. The proposal suggests that by removing the disincentives of Stamp Duty and Council Tax, the city can unlock existing housing stock and generate the necessary revenue to build 106,000 social and affordable homes, fundamentally altering the trajectory of London's housing affordability.

Bryson DeChambeau appeared on Katie Miller’s podcast and mixed golf talk with speculation about moon‑landing video authenticity and the existence of interdimensional beings, while also flagging uncertainty over his future amid LIV Golf’s financial turmoil.DeChambeau’s Podcast Remarks on Moon Landing FootageThe two‑time major champion was asked whether astronaut Alan Shepard really hit a golf ball on the Moon during Apollo 14. DeChambeau replied that he believes the missions occurred but is skeptical of the released footage, citing Elon Musk’s statements as a reference point. He added, “I do think that there are interdimensional beings out there, for sure,” and expressed belief in UAPs.Performance and Financial ContextDeChambeau has missed the cut at the last two majors (the Masters and the U.S. PGA Championship).LIV Golf is confronting an uncertain future after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced plans to withdraw its backing.DeChambeau hinted he may shift focus to YouTube content creation if the tour collapses.Implications for LIV Golf and Athlete BrandingThe golfer’s public doubts about a historic scientific event, combined with his openness to non‑golf media, illustrate a broader trend where high‑profile athletes leverage personal brands beyond sport. Kylie Minogue Reveals Second Cancer Diagnosis in 2021

Kylie Minogue has revealed that she was diagnosed with cancer for a second time in early 2021. The …
The Revelation of a Second Cancer Diagnosis Kylie Minogue has revealed that in early 2021 she was diagnosed with cancer for a second time, after diagnosis and successful treatment for breast cancer in 2005. Details of the Diagnosis and Treatment The pop star discussed the previously unannounced diagnosis in a new Netflix documentary entitled Kylie, available from today. “My second cancer diagnosis was in early 2021. I was able to keep that to myself … Not like the first time,” she said, referring to her highly publicised first treatment. 2005: Diagnosed with breast cancer, treated and given the all-clear. 2021: Diagnosed with cancer for a second time, kept private. The Impact on Her Life and Music Minogue said that after her treatment, she struggled “to find the right time” to announce it publicly, including after the huge success of her Grammy-winning 2023 single Padam Padam. “I don’t feel obliged to tell the world, and actually I just couldn’t at the time because I was just a shell of a person,” she said. “I didn’t want to leave the house again at one point. Padam Padam opened so many doors for me but on the inside I knew that cancer wasn’t just a blip in my life. And I really just wanted to say what happened so I can let go of it. I’d sit through interviews and every opportunity I thought, ‘now’s the time’, but I kept it to myself.” The Netflix Documentary The new Netflix documentary is in three parts, and directed by Michael Harte, who edited Netflix’s successful four-part documentary on David Beckham. As well as Minogue, it features interviews with her sister Dannii, and former duet partners Jason Donovan and Nick Cave, among others. The Importance of Check-Ups Minogue added in the promotional materials accompanying the launch: “There are so many people for whom cancer is part of their life and, I get it; you just want to move on and put it in the past or park it to the side. But, check-ups are incredibly important. It can be daunting and triggering but please be mindful of just how vital they are - and reach out for help if you need it, you’re not alone.”

Samsung Union Workers Threaten 18-Day Strike Over Bonus Dispute

Samsung Electronics faces its worst-ever strike with nearly 48,000 workers threatening to walk off …
The Lead: Samsung's Union Dispute Samsung Electronics is facing its worst-ever strike, with nearly 48,000 workers threatening to walk off production lines on Thursday for 18 days over a dispute about bonus payouts. What Does Samsung's Union Want? Samsung's union has asked the company to abolish a cap that limits bonuses to 50% of annual salaries and to allocate 15% of annual operating profit to a bonus pool that would be distributed to workers. It also wants Samsung to make the changes binding beyond this year. Samsung made a very different offer. Transcripts of negotiations between the union and Samsung showed that in March, Samsung cited estimates that some staff at a smaller rival, SK Hynix, could receive bonuses equivalent to 607% of their annual salary and proposed that its memory chip workers would gain a bonus exceeding levels that SK Hynix workers receive. Samsung also proposed bonuses of 50% to 100% for staff in its logic chip businesses. These bonuses, however, would be a one-off payment for this year. In principle, it does not want to abolish the cap on bonuses at 50% of annual salaries. Why Are Workers Fighting for More Pay Now? Samsung and SK Hynix have seen profits balloon to record highs thanks to a global shortage of memory chips amid the boom in artificial intelligence. The two companies account for the majority of global memory production. Last year, SK Hynix abolished its cap on bonus pay for 10 years, media reports said. This resulted in bonuses more than three times higher than those offered to Samsung workers, prompting many to jump ship for SK Hynix and sparking a surge in union membership, according to Samsung's union. How Might the Strike Play Out? The strike promises to be far larger and more damaging than the last walkout to affect Samsung in 2024, when about 6,000 workers took part. Samsung's union says that nearly 48,000 employees, the majority of them chip workers, have signed up to participate. That represents 38% of Samsung Electronics' domestic work force. A court on Monday partially granted Samsung's request for an injunction, ruling that essential staffing levels at some production facilities must be maintained during any industrial action. Samsung has notified the union that this will require 7,087 workers to report for work even if the strike goes ahead. Why Is the Strike Causing Such Concern? The strike threatens to dent the supply of memory chips at a time of severe shortages. Samsung is the world's largest maker of DRAM chips, commanding 36% of the market as of the end of last year, according to research firm TrendForce. Memory chips, key components in laptops and smartphones, have become essential building blocks for AI datacenters. Jeff Kim, a KB Securities analyst, has estimated that an 18-day strike could disrupt global supplies of DRAM memory by 3% to 4% and NAND memory by 2% to 3%, which would probably fuel further price increases.

Few of the delirious fans in attendance that day would have believed another 22 years would pass before their team would win it again.White Hart Lane has been bulldozed and rebuilt while Highbury is now a block of flats, with the Emirates Stadium overseeing a painful period of decline under Arsène Wenger, before Unai Emery's brief tenure. The landscape of English football has changed dramatically in those two decades, with financial power shifting and new competitors emerging. The Manager's ImpactMikel Arteta, an Arsenal player from 2011 to 2016, took charge in 2019 and has made the team title contenders again. With a solid foundation in place, Arteta will look to build a dynasty that can compete consistently for domestic and European honors. The club's financial position, coupled with their on-field success, positions them to strengthen further in the transfer market. For the first time in over two decades, Arsenal can approach the future with confidence, knowing they have proven themselves as champions once again.

Billie Jean King Completes College Degree at 82 After 61-Year Tennis Career

Tennis legend Billie Jean King graduated from college at age 82, completing the history degree she …
A Tennis Legend's Academic JourneyWhen Billie Jean King left college in 1964, she had a clear purpose. Within a few years, she had become the top-ranked tennis professional in the world. Over a trailblazing career, she won 39 championships, a Presidential Medal of Freedom and a congressional Gold Medal – all while pushing publicly for gender and pay equality.Last year, she finally returned to finish the degree in history she started more than six decades ago. On Monday, she graduated at 82 years old.The Commencement Celebration"It is a privilege for me to be here as a member of your graduating class," King said at her commencement. "Yeah baby, only 61 years!"King recalled growing up in a working-class family, the daughter of a firefighter father and homemaker mother."Like so many of my fellow graduates, I am the first member of my immediate family to graduate college, like many of you," King said.Early Life and Tennis BeginningsShe chose Cal State Los Angeles, then known as Los Angeles State College, because the tennis coach, Scotty Deeds, trained men and women together. He said it would help give her the level of competition she needed to excel."Their approach to winning in tennis was revolutionary at the time," King said of Deeds and the women's coach Dr Joan Johnson. "Even today most collegiate D-1 and D-2 tennis teams do not have the women and men practice together. Scotty and Dr Johnson had it right and they took the extra step for their student athletes."King distinguished herself as a tennis champ in college, winning Wimbledon doubles while enrolled. King was 18 and her partner, Karen Hantze, was 17, making them the youngest team to win at the time.A Lifelong Commitment to EqualityBut King told the crowd that her true motivation since childhood had been to fight discrimination, a calling she first remembered feeling at age 12, when she realized that virtually everyone at the tennis clubs where she trained was white."I asked myself, where is everybody else?" King said. "From that day forward, I committed my life to equality and inclusion for all. Tennis is a global sport and it became my platform, but equality was my dream – to make the world a better place."She added: "We can never understand inclusion unless we've been excluded."King, one of the first openly gay professional athletes, founded the Women's Tennis Association in 1973 and successfully campaigned to get the US Open to pay equal purses at the US Open. That same year, she defeated Bobby Riggs in a historic match billed "The Battle of the Sexes" – a feat later dramatized in a Hollywood film staring Emma Stone and Steve Carell.Legacy and Final WordsKing ended her speech with words of advice for her fellow graduates."Have fun," King said. "Be fearless. And make history."

Meta Mandates Over 7,000 Workers to Move to New AI Teams

The Meta AI Reorganization Meta is recenter itself around artificial intelligence, the tech giant is mandating more than 7,000 workers to move to new teams, and it’s radically changing some employees’ jobs. The Guardian has learned that some of these reassigned employees will shift to two new teams: one building AI cloud infrastructure and another that’s building an internal AI agent codenamed Hatch. The Details of the Reassignment Late last week, Meta employees received a notice that engineers had been “selected” for reassignment and would begin reporting to the cloud infrastructure and Hatch teams by the end of this week. Meta made a similar move last month when it reshuffled at least 1,000 engineers onto a new data labelling team called Applied AI, or AAI – at first giving them the option to volunteer, but later telling workers, “transfers aren’t optional.” The Impact on Employees This rapid-fire reorganization is stirring up discontent within Meta during an already volatile era. “The new orgs showcase a shift in top level management strategy towards micro-authoritarianism,” said a Meta engineer, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the press. Instead of empowering employees, it feels like Meta’s attitude has shifted to, “‘No, we tell you what to do, and command and order is the way forward,’” this employee told the Guardian. The Future of Meta's AI Ambitions OpenAI, Google and Anthropic’s consumer AI products are already in the lead, so Meta has been playing catch-up in the AI race. In January, Mark Zuckerberg said in an earnings call that the company will spend up to $135bn on AI infrastructure this year “to train leading models and deliver personal super intelligence to billions of people and businesses around the world”.
