Hyper Games’ “Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth” Brings Moomin’s Melancholy to Play

Norwegian indie studio Hyper Games releases its second Moomin‑inspired title, Moomintroll: Winter’s…
Hyper Games launches a second Moomin‑inspired adventureBuilding on the modest success of Snufkin: Melody of Moomin Valley, the Oslo‑based studio Hyper Games has released Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth. The title places the titular Moomin in a solitary winter night, confronting mortality, grief and the need to adapt to harsh weather – core motifs of Tove Jansson’s 1957 novel Moominland Midwinter.Platforms, pricing and early market reachAvailable on PC, Mac and Nintendo Switch from launch day.Priced at $24.99 on most storefronts, with a discounted bundle for owners of the previous Snufkin game.Initial Steam and Switch download numbers reported at 15,000 copies in the first week, driven by family‑friendly marketing. Why the Moomin ethos matters for modern gamingThe games capture Jansson’s “happy‑sad” tone, offering players gentle gameplay – snowball throwing, shovelling, and exploratory wandering – while embedding philosophical moments about death and change. By preserving the hand‑illustrated style of the original books, Hyper Games differentiates itself from the glossy, CGI‑heavy titles dominating the market, appealing to parents seeking low‑stress experiences for young children.Potential ripple effects for literary adaptationsHyper’s rigorous approval process with Moomin Characters Ltd demonstrates that faithful adaptations can coexist with creative freedom, as seen in the addition of a new character drawn from Jansson’s lesser‑known comics. Success could encourage other indie studios to explore classic literature, especially works with strong visual identities and thematic depth.Looking ahead: indie storytelling in the next wave of gamesIndustry observers predict a rise in “remix” projects that translate beloved books into interactive formats, leveraging modest budgets and niche audiences. If Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth maintains steady sales and positive word‑of‑mouth, it may pave the way for further collaborations between literary estates and Scandinavian developers, reinforcing the region’s reputation for nature‑centric, emotionally resonant games.

The Eight Greatest Medical Video Games

The article lists eight of the best hospital games spanning more than 40 years of gruesome interact…
The LeadLike the rest of the western world, our household is currently binging medical drama The Pitt, revelling in its visceral depiction of life in a modern emergency department. So far the series has yet to inspire a video game tie-in (though there has been an amusing parody), but fans wishing to try their hand at tense medical (mal)practice, should not despair. Here are eight of the best hospital games spanning more than 40 years of gruesome interactive surgery. Microsurgeon (1982, Mattel Intellivision) Created by lone developer Rick Levine, this early oddity shrank players down and put them into the bloodstream of a sick patient where they had to blast diseased cells and unclog arteries. Clearly inspired by the movie Fantastic Voyage, the title features strange, colourful, almost psychedelic depictions of human anatomy. Life & Death (1988, PC, Mac, Atari ST, Amiga etc) This point-and-click abdominal surgery simulation was groundbreaking in its realism. Players had to diagnose a variety of conditions (kidney stones! aortic aneurysm!), before ordering tests and scans and finally operating while an ECG display showed your victim’s – sorry, patient’s – heart rate. Sanitarium (1998, PC, smartphones from 2015) The asylum has always been a popular trope for horror games, from the imaginatively titled 1981 adventure Asylum to the Silent Hill series. I’m going for this disturbing psychological thriller in which a patient wakes up in a seemingly abandoned sanatorium, his memory gone, his face completely bandaged. Emergency Call Ambulance (1999, arcade) You’ve no doubt heard of Crazy Taxi, Sega’s hectic arcade game about careering around a city picking up annoying passengers. But did you ever play its stablemate, Emergency Call Ambulance, about driving around a city picking up desperately ill passengers? Trauma Center: Under the Knife (2005, Nintendo DS) If you thought the Nintendo DS was all about cosy puzzle games, you were wrong. Developed by veteran publisher Atlus, this fascinating game was part surgery sim, using the handheld’s touchscreen and stylus for realistic operations, and part visual novel as lead character Dr Derek Stiles navigated life in a futuristic hospital. Surgeon Simulator (2013, PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox) Surgeon Simulator is a game where you play as a surgeon with a goal to perform operations. The game became famous for its challenging gameplay and realistic physics.

Bullyache: A Good Man Is Hard to Find – A Grim Reckoning for the Banking Elite

Bullyache's latest production, *A Good Man Is Hard to Find*, offers a visceral, darkly surreal crit…
The Bleakest Office Party: A New Critique of Financial PowerBullyache's new piece, A Good Man Is Hard to Find, opens with a scene that feels like the aftermath of the bleakest office party imaginable. The stage is dominated by a giant boardroom table, featuring a naked man on the floor, another with trousers around his ankles, and someone urinating into a whisky glass. This visceral imagery sets the tone for a production that uses dance theatre to deconstruct the toxic masculinity and arrogance of the financial elite. The show is not merely a performance; it is a commentary on the 2008 global economic crisis. The set design, featuring a wall of broken glass, symbolizes the shattered economy and the people who drove the truck through it. The narrative follows these 'wasted cretins' as they face a surreal, less glossy version of the TV show Industry, turning their fate into a menacing game of power and domination. From Bohemian Club Rituals to Gameshow DominationWhile the opening is chaotic, the piece takes a sharp narrative turn halfway through, transforming into a gameshow that explicitly identifies the characters as the bankers responsible for the financial meltdown. The creative duo, Courtney Deyn and Jacob Samuel, draw inspiration from the secretive Bohemian Club, a gathering of rich and powerful men known for rituals like the 'cremation of care,' which the show interprets as an absolution of guilt.Setting: Sadler's Wells East, London (until 9 May)Music: Original scores by Bullyache, featuring Shostakovich's chamber symphony in C minorThemes: Power, domination, and the 'cremation of care'The Atmosphere of Guilt and LonelinessThe atmosphere-making in the production is described as masterful, if depressing. The soundscapes are cranium-shaking, blending classical leaps with Latin American swivel and punchy folk dance. The inclusion of quasi-religious imagery and a cleaner singing Ave Maria amidst the body fluids adds a layer of dark irony and spiritual desolation. However, the review notes that the piece is reaching for something bigger. While the critique of the 'banking bro' archetype is clear, the show lacks specific personal stories. The political message is somewhat generic ('big bankers bad') and would benefit from more concrete details about the characters' lives and the long-term ramifications of their actions.Future of Political Dance TheatreBullyache has demonstrated brilliant ambition with this production, successfully creating a world that is unpredictable and intense. However, the lack of specific narrative depth suggests that for this genre of political dance theatre to truly resonate, creators must move beyond archetypes and provide the 'sting' necessary to make the audience feel the consequences of the financial crisis on a human level.

The Questions I'd Ask the Enhanced Games

The author was denied media credentials for the Enhanced Games, an event allowing athletes to use p…
The Rejected Media Credential The plan to fly to Las Vegas to cover what the Enhanced Games claims is the “next frontier of human performance” ended with a short email sent at 7.02pm on Friday. “After careful consideration, we are unable to approve your media credential request for this year’s event,” it said. “Due to the high volume of applications and limited media capacity, we could not accommodate all requests … thank you again for your interest and understanding.” The Concerns About the Enhanced Games Admittedly, the rejection didn’t come entirely out of the blue. Unlike most sports organisations, the Enhanced Games had a pre-screening process which led to a nice PR man calling me a few days beforehand. His opening gambit? To point out the Guardian’s negativity towards the event. The Questions I'd Ask Why, he then asked, weren’t we criticising others in the longevity space? Er, because they aren’t running an event dubbed the Steroid Olympics? What about the basics? Are the tracks legal, the timing devices reputable, the officials pulled off the streets? You claim that the athletes are leaving “the old system behind for a new era of honesty and science”. But do you really believe that steroids, human growth hormone and EPO are safe? Can athletes sue the Enhanced Games? Many of you have stressed the benefits of taking banned drugs. But have you experienced any side-effects? What is your response to former athletes who say you are a dangerous influence on kids? The Future of the Enhanced Games Personally, I believe such talk is nonsense. But I don’t dismiss the Enhanced Games out of hand. I spoke to one person in the health-tech space, who has dealt with its founders, and he pointed out they are smart people and billionaires who tend to get what they want.

Celebrity Traitors Attracts High-Profile Cast for Second Season

The second season of Celebrity Traitors has attracted a high-profile cast, including actors, comedi…
The Allure of Celebrity Traitors If it were any other show, the sight of comedian Alan Carr sobbing under the burden of his dishonesty may have been enough to put off any celebrity thinking about accepting a place in the perilous Traitors' castle. Yet the second season of Celebrity Traitors, being filmed at its now famous Highlands retreat, has managed to attract one of the most high-profile casts ever assembled for a reality TV show. A Star-Studded Lineup Actors who open West End shows and others with Oscar nominations to their name will be plotting alongside the nation's most in-demand comedians and writers – and the odd fashion icon. The starry lineup was announced as filming began, amid speculation it would have been too hard to keep under wraps. The likes of Richard E Grant, Michael Sheen, and Jerry Hall will compete alongside Miranda Hart, Romesh Ranganathan, and James Acaster. The Appeal of the Game According to Stephen Lambert, the chief executive of the show's producer, Studio Lambert, the reason most celebrities gave for signing up to Celebrity Traitors was their love for the game itself. "Almost without exception, the first reason is that they're fans of the show," he said. "Beyond that, the answers are surprisingly personal: people who feel they've spent their careers in a particular public lane and want to show a different side of themselves; people whose children or grandchildren have effectively dared them into it; people who are fascinated by the psychology of the game and want to see how they'd hold up under pressure." The Casting Process TV insiders pointed to the show's other in-built advantages, including its intense but not too long filming schedule, and lack of embarrassment factor. "It's got everything going for it and I think that's why it's attracted an amazing cast," said Peter Fincham, a former BBC One controller. "However big the celebrity, to say 'I'm going on the Celebrity Traitors', there's no embarrassment." The Future of Reality TV The fact that so many big names have signed up to be faithfuls and traitors should not take away the skill of the show's casting. "The perfect cast isn't the most famous one, it's the one where everyone brings something different to the table," said Lambert. With a cast made up of actors, comedians, and fashion icons, the second season of Celebrity Traitors is set to be just as compelling as the first.

Pakistan Athletes Allowed in India for Multilateral Sports Events

India's sports ministry has announced that Pakistani athletes can participate in multilateral sport…
The New Sports Policy Pakistani players and teams will be able to participate in multilateral events hosted by India, but bilateral events remain off the table, India's sport ministry said on Wednesday. Simplified Visa Process India also said the visa process for sportspersons and officials will be simplified while office bearers of international sport governing bodies will be granted multi-entry visas. The Impact on Bilateral Sports “In so far as bilateral sports events in each other’s country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India,” the ministry added. There has been a long freeze in bilateral cricket between the nuclear-armed neighbours, who have not played a full series since 2012-13 and now meet largely at neutral venues. India's Sports Hosting Ambitions India is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, and they have also bid for the 2036 Olympics and the 2038 Asian Games in Ahmedabad. The Future of Sports Diplomacy “With regard to international and multilateral events, in India or abroad, we are guided by the practices of international sports bodies and the interest of our own sportspersons,” the ministry said in a memorandum. “It is also relevant to take into account India’s emergence as a credible venue to host international sports events.”
