Iran's Drone Attacks Spark Fires in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Kill One in UAE

Iran's drone attacks have caused fires in Kuwait and Bahrain, and killed a man in the UAE, escalati…
Iran's aggressive actions have led to a series of incidents across the Gulf region. Kuwait's international airport was hit by drones from Iran, causing a large fire at its fuel tanks. The airport's spokesman, Abdullah al-Rajhi, confirmed that the attacks were 'brazen' and resulted in material damage but no human injuries. In Bahrain, a fire broke out at an undisclosed company facility due to Iranian aggression, with civil defence crews working to extinguish the blaze. The incident has heightened concerns about the stability of the region. The United Arab Emirates also reported a fatality, with shrapnel from a drone interception killing a Bangladeshi national on a farm in Fujairah city. Authorities are investigating the incident. These attacks are part of a broader conflict between Iran and a US-Israeli coalition. Iran has claimed to target US assets, but Gulf nations assert that Tehran's actions have targeted civilian infrastructure. The economic impact of the conflict is significant, with a UN report estimating that the Arab world's GDP could decline by 3.7 to 6 percent, equivalent to a contraction of $120bn to $194bn, after just one month of war.Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have been complicated by contradictory statements from US President Donald Trump about the potential for a quick exit. Iran has dismissed a US ceasefire proposal as 'maximalist' and 'unreasonable', demanding compensation for damages and a permanent end to hostilities.

American Journalist Kidnapped in Baghdad by Suspected Iranian-Backed Militia

An American journalist, Shelly Kittleson, has been kidnapped in Baghdad by a suspected Iranian-back…
An American journalist has been kidnapped in Baghdad by a suspected Iranian-backed Iraqi armed group, the US said, as regional security deteriorates after the US-Israeli attack on Iran. The state department said it was working to ensure the American’s release 'as soon as possible'. “An individual with ties to the Iranian-aligned militia group Kataib Hezballah believed to be involved in the kidnapping has been taken into custody by Iraqi authorities,” Dylan Johnson, the assistant secretary of state for global public affairs, wrote on X. Iraq said that authorities intercepted a vehicle that overturned as they tried to flee. “Security forces were able to arrest one of the suspects and seize one of the vehicles used in the crime,” the Iraqi interior ministry said in a statement. The journalist was identified as Shelly Kittleson, a freelancer, by media advocacy groups as well as Al-Monitor, one of the news outlets for which she worked. Kittleson is a longtime freelancer in the region, reporting extensively from Syria and Iraq. Al-Monitor in a statement said it was “deeply alarmed” by Kittleson’s kidnapping and called for her “safe and immediate release”. “We stand by her vital reporting from the region and call for her swift return to continue her important work,” the news organisation said. The US has warned Americans of rising risks in Iraq, where Iran has sway over several Shia armed groups, after the US and Israel attacked Iran on 28 February. Johnson said that the state department had “fulfilled our duty” to warn the journalist about threats and reiterated a warning for Americans to leave Iraq.

Israel Escalates Lebanon Invasion, Four Soldiers Killed in Combat

The Israeli military has launched a deeper invasion into southern Lebanon, clashing with Hezbollah …
The Israeli military has confirmed that four soldiers were killed in combat in southern Lebanon, where its forces are engaged in clashes with Hezbollah fighters following a ground invasion. In a statement, the army named three soldiers from the same battalion who 'fell during combat'. A separate statement confirmed another soldier's death in the same incident, with two others wounded. This brings the total number of Israeli soldiers reported killed since fighting began on March 2 to ten, following a US-Israeli joint attack on Iran. The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reports that over 1,200 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon, with more than a million displaced. The escalation comes after the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that two peacekeepers were killed in an explosion near the southern Lebanese village of Bani Haiyyan. Another peacekeeper was killed by a projectile on Sunday.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to expand its invasion in southern Lebanon, aiming to extend a 'buffer zone' to the Litani River. Israel's far-right ministers have urged Netanyahu to annex southern Lebanon, as the military destroys infrastructure to isolate the area.Al Jazeera's Lebanon correspondent, Zeina Khodr, reported that Monday night marked a new escalation as Israel opened a new front in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, targeting strategic supply lines for Hezbollah. Khodr noted that Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem acknowledged the imbalance of power but vowed to make the war 'costly' for Israel. The conflict in Lebanon is part of the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran, which has resulted in over 1,340 deaths since February 28. Netanyahu has reportedly told US officials that any future agreement between the US and Tehran will not stop Israel's actions in Lebanon.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has assured that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen after the ongoing conflict with Iran. In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Rubio emphasized that the strait will be reopened either with Iran's consent or through an international coalition including the US.The conflict began on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Despite US President Donald Trump stating that the US is pursuing diplomacy, Rubio mentioned ongoing direct talks between the US and Iran, primarily through intermediaries. Iran has denied these talks are happening.Rubio called on Iran to take concrete steps to end its nuclear programme and cease manufacturing drones and missiles. He accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons to threaten and blackmail the world, which Tehran denies. The situation remains volatile, with speculation about a possible US troop deployment in Iran. Rubio warned of severe consequences if Iran keeps the strait closed after the conflict ends. The White House has considered various military options, including a special forces operation to seize enriched uranium stored in Iran.

US Threatens to Seize Iranian Oil: What It Means for Global Markets

US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in seizing Iran's oil, which could have significan…
US President Donald Trump has stated that his 'preference would be to take the oil' in Iran, sparking concerns about the potential for a US invasion or occupation of the country. Iran is one of the world's biggest oil producers, holding around 24 percent of the Middle East's and 12 percent of the world's proven oil reserves, with about 157 billion barrels of proven crude oil.The Trump administration has threatened to target Iran's energy infrastructure, including oil wells, if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been under a de facto Iranian blockade for weeks, triggering a global energy crisis. The US has also unveiled plans to prepare for limited ground operations in Iran, potentially including raids on Kharg Island and coastal sites near the Strait of Hormuz.Seizing Iranian oil would not be easy, as the US would have to occupy Iran's oil production sites and refineries, essentially occupying mainland Iran. However, if the US were to lift sanctions on Iranian oil after seizing it, it could lead to a flow of more Iranian oil into global markets, bringing down oil prices. The US-Israeli war on Iran has already sent global oil prices soaring, with benchmark Brent crude rising to more than 3 percent on Monday to $116 a barrel – the highest level in nearly two weeks. The oil price was about $65 per barrel before the war.In 2023, Iran's gross domestic product (GDP) was around $457.5bn, according to World Bank data. Iran's net oil export revenues were estimated at $53bn, equivalent to roughly 12 percent of Iran's GDP.This is not the first time the US has shown an interest in Iranian oil. In 1953, the government of Mohammad Mossadegh, Iran's first democratically elected prime minister, was toppled in a CIA-orchestrated coup after he nationalised the British-controlled firm Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC), the predecessor of modern-day BP.

Iranian Attack on Kuwait Power Plant Kills One, Heightens Regional Tensions

An Iranian attack on a Kuwaiti power and water desalination plant has killed an Indian worker and d…
Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity confirmed that an Iranian attack on a power and water desalination plant resulted in the death of an Indian worker and significant material damage to a service building. The attack is part of Iranian aggression against Kuwait, according to the ministry.Emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to the site to manage the aftermath and ensure continued operations. The incident occurred as regional tensions spike following the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran over a month ago.Iranian forces have retaliated against Israel and countries hosting US military assets with drone and missile strikes, causing casualties and infrastructure damage. The conflict has also led to Iran effectively blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas, driving up energy prices and unsettling financial markets. The vulnerability of critical water infrastructure in one of the world's most water-scarce regions has been exposed by the war. Kuwait has faced repeated attacks since the conflict began, including the detection of 14 missiles and 12 drones in its airspace, with several targeting a military camp and injuring 10 servicemen. The US and Israeli attacks on Iran have killed over 2,000 people, including high-ranking officials and children, and destroyed critical infrastructure. The situation remains volatile, with US President Donald Trump pausing threatened attacks on Iranian energy plants until April 6, and Iran vowing to respond to any attacks on its facilities with strikes on energy sites across the Gulf region.

Israeli Police Block Catholic Cardinal from Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday

Israeli police have taken unprecedented action by blocking Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday. This move marks a significant escalation in tensions, as it is the first time in centuries that the Heads of the Church have been prevented from celebrating the Palm Sunday Mass at this sacred site. The Catholic Church strongly condemned the decision, describing it as a 'manifestly unreasonable and grossly disproportionate measure' that disregards the sensibilities of billions of people worldwide. The Church emphasized that this incident represents an extreme departure from basic principles of reasonableness, freedom of worship, and respect for the status quo.Israeli police cited safety concerns due to the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran as the reason for closing all holy sites in Jerusalem. However, this explanation has been met with criticism from various countries, including Italy and France. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the incident as 'an offence not only to the faithful, but to any community that respects religious freedom.'The incident has sparked international condemnation, with French President Emmanuel Macron emphasizing that worship 'for all religions' must be guaranteed in Jerusalem. The Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also summoned Israel's ambassador over the incident, highlighting the growing diplomatic fallout.
