Trump Says He Doesn’t Think About Americans’ Finances Amid Iran Talks

Former President Donald Trump told reporters he does not consider the financial strain on Americans…
Executive Lead: Trump Dismisses Domestic Economic Pain While Pursuing Iran DealDonald Trump asserted that the growing financial pressure on Americans from the Iran war does not influence his drive for a peace settlement, emphasizing instead the goal of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.White House Remarks Highlight Iran‑Centric StrategySpeaking to reporters at the White House before boarding a plane to China, Trump said, “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.” The statement was made on Tuesday, 13 May 2026, just days before the U.S. midterm campaign intensifies.Economic Data Pointing to Rising Cost‑of‑Living PressuresU.S. inflation rose 3.8% in April, the fastest pace since 2023.Average gasoline price topped $4.50 per gallon, the highest in four years.Food prices up nearly 4% month‑over‑month.Airline fares increased by more than 20%.Energy‑related costs have surged following the U.S. and Israel attacks on Iran in late February.Political and Economic Impact Ahead of the MidtermsThe remarks arrive as the 2026 midterm election narrative is increasingly dominated by affordability concerns. While Trump downplays the domestic fallout, rivals such as Marco Rubio frame the U.S. as “very fortunate” compared with other nations facing sharper price spikes. Consumer confidence, according to a University of Michigan survey, has slipped to 2022‑level lows, echoing past inflation spikes.Outlook: Trump’s Optimistic Forecast vs. Market RealitiesTrump predicted that a resolution to the war would trigger a “massive drop in the price of oil” and propel the stock market “through the roof,” heralding a new “golden age.” Energy Secretary Chris Wright has cautioned that fuel prices may not fall below $3 per gallon until next year, and analysts note that inflationary pressures remain entrenched. The divergence between Trump’s bullish outlook and prevailing economic indicators will likely shape voter sentiment as the election approaches.

The Incident Details The Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) said on Wednesday that the 66-year-old Australian violated their ethics and disciplinary regulations during a Japan Under-23 team tour of Australia from April 1 to 15. "These measures relate to incidences of verbal abuse directed at local match officials," the JRFU said in a statement. Xi Jinping Expected to Press Trump on Taiwan, Tariffs Amid Regional Tensions

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to seek concessions on Taiwan and US tariffs during his su…
The Lead: A High-Stakes Diplomatic Encounter Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to seek concessions on Taiwan and US tariffs when he meets United States President Donald Trump for a critical summit taking place in the shadow of the war on Iran. Trump's arrival in China marks the first trip by a US leader to the country since 2017, setting the stage for what could be a pivotal moment in US-China relations. The Taiwan Confrontation: Core Interest and Red Lines Unlike Trump's mercurial policymaking approach, Xi is widely seen as predictable in his goals for the summit, particularly concerning Beijing's "core interests" related to national security and territorial integrity. At the top of that list is Taiwan, which Beijing views as an inalienable part of its territory despite Taiwan's self-governing status. China has named Taiwan as the first of "four red lines" that "must not be challenged." In a call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio last month, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described Taiwan as "the biggest risk in the China-US relationship." While analysts say it's unlikely the US will change its position on Taiwan due to Chinese pressure, Trump has indicated the summit will include discussions about the $14bn arms package approved by Congress for Taiwan. The Trade War Dynamics: Economic Uncertainty and Strategic Maneuvering Xi is also eager to smooth over US-China relations after a tumultuous 18 months that saw Trump launch a second trade war with the world's second-largest economy. The standoff saw both countries implement escalating tariffs and punitive measures, including export controls, before hitting pause in May. During their last meeting in South Korea in October, Xi and Trump agreed to a one-year reprieve in their trade war, though some trade measures remain in place. China is likely to agree to increase purchases of US agricultural exports and Boeing planes during the summit, but is unlikely to make concessions on rare earths—a sector it dominates—without major political trade-offs from the US. The Geopolitical Chessboard: Iran Conflict and Global Implications The US-Israel war on Iran will loom large over the summit. Although not a direct participant, China has been significantly impacted by the economic fallout of the conflict and the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of global oil and natural gas supplies typically pass. Beijing has consistently called for negotiations and a comprehensive ceasefire since the conflict began, a message Xi is likely to reiterate. Despite Trump stating he doesn't need China's "help" resolving the war, the White House has pressured Beijing to influence Iran to reopen the strait. China has maintained a "comprehensive strategic partnership" with Iran since 2016 and purchases more than 80% of its oil, though Xi is expected to limit China's role to mediation, consistent with its non-intervention foreign policy principle. The Future of US-China Relations: Strategic Adjustments and Long-term Planning For Beijing, the stakes are particularly high as its view of Trump has shifted from a "predictable transactional counterpart" to a "more action-oriented and harder-to-restrain opponent." Rather than securing immediate concessions, China's priority is "trying to adjust the current strategic position and negotiating pace that are unfavorable to it, and bring US-China interactions back into a framework that it can better control." Xi may also support Trump's plan to create a "Board of Trade" and "Board of Investment" to oversee US-China economic ties, as Beijing seeks predictability and certainty for the remainder of Trump's term through January 2029. This stability would allow China to plan its own economic policies with greater confidence, particularly regarding tariff levels and trade relationships.

Uprising by Tahmima Anam: A Fiery Novel of Female Rebellion

Tahmima Anam's 'Uprising' is a powerful novel of female rebellion set on an isolated Bangladeshi is…
A Novel of Female Defiance"Yes, you will leave this place," the chorus of child protagonists in a community of sex workers say at the start of Tahmima Anam's incantatory and fiery new novel of female defiance, Uprising. "This story will save your life," we were told three times in Deepa Anappara's 2020 debut, also featuring precarious children dwelling in the margins. What is the distance between imagination and action, lived realities and dreams? How can solidarities be forged in such circumstances? Uprising holds within its pages some answers and a deep conviction – for a better life, a more just world – and then reaches out and fights for it.The Island Community and Its OppressionAs a journalist, Anam visited the infamous "floating brothel" Banishanta in Bangladesh; her new novel, set on an isolated island "at the end of the country, in the middle of a river that emptied into the sea", fictionalises the island's community and ecological precarity. Here, a generation of daughters grow up watching their mothers trapped in sex work – "we knew that the work was something that was paid for in money, and also in bodies" – and wish a different life for themselves. The women are controlled by the cruel Amma, who was once herself sold into sex trafficking. The victim becomes the perpetrator – and the children are discerning enough to know that their mothers are "not here because they had done something bad, but because something bad had been done to them". The first lesson of the island? No one is coming to save you – and living here changes you, as inexorably as the rising tides. The island is a prison. The mothers are ghosts of their former selves. The children, witnessing the "sexing", are all too grown up, stripped of their innocence. By the time they are born, their mothers' memories have faded "like paint in the sun"; they live on the island "tied to" their daughters. What, or who, will it take to break free from these chains?Feminism and Climate Crisis in LiteratureWhen the waters rise, customers stay away. The mothers speculate: "the swirling river was keeping the smaller boats from making the journey"; "the land was cursed". In a last-ditch attempt to lure men back for business, Amma sends for a new girl. Little does she know that Kusum Khan's arrival will signal the beginning of the end. A girl from the city with a history of participating in protests against the Dictator, she doesn't acquiesce to the island's rules, as the others have been conditioned to; instead, she sows the seeds for what will grow into a life-altering act of resistance. The children start to believe that she is their saviour – maybe even Bon Bibi, a legendary guardian of the forest. A different life seems graspable, just beyond the island's shore. When the titular uprising at last arrives, it summons an all-consuming storm, washing over the island. And the reader, too, is ready to join the revolution – their fist in the open air.Uprising is a feminist novel ("here they were: a wall of women") and a protest novel ("The moment Kusum entered the protest, she felt as if she was becoming a small organ in a living, breathing thing"). It is a coming-of-age novel, and a response to the climate crisis; a story of sisterhood protecting, and failing to protect; of structural inequality and the rotten core of patriarchal corruption; of unlucky women in an unfair world. "When the men came to reclaim the island, we stood rooted in place with our eyes closed, unable to watch. We stood rooted in place with our eyes open, unable to stop watching." While the mothers and daughters in Anam's fictional world are victims of specific generational violence, this observation can be applied to humanity at large: we are all watching – frozen, complicit – as injustices rise the world over. The Power of Rage and Radical HopeThrough her unwaveringly political and unflinchingly forthright novel, Anam shows the power of rage and radical hope. A new world can burn bright from the fires of injustice – and here, it's the mothers that hold the match.

Google adds Gemini-powered Dictation to Gboard, which could be bad news for dictation startups

Google has launched Rambler, an AI-powered voice dictation feature for its Gboard Android keyboard …
The Lead: Google Enters Dictation Market with RamblerGoogle has announced Rambler, a new AI-powered voice dictation feature for Gboard, its widely used Android keyboard app. The launch puts Google in direct competition with a growing crop of AI-powered dictation apps like Wispr Flow and Typeless, most of which have yet to establish a strong foothold on Android. The Technical Breakthrough: Gemini-Powered Multilingual DictationRambler removes filler words like "ums" and "ahs" and understands mid-sentence corrections. The feature uses Gemini-based multilingual models that support code switching, allowing users to move between languages mid-sentence without losing context. This capability reflects how many multilingual speakers actually communicate, addressing a gap that most Western dictation apps have been slow to support.Privacy and Distribution StrategyGoogle has emphasized that Gboard will clearly indicate when Rambler is in use and doesn't store any voice recordings, using audio only for transcription. The company uses a combination of on-device and cloud-based processing to ensure features are "safe and private." The core advantage for Google is distribution: Gboard is the default keyboard for the vast majority of Android users worldwide, meaning Rambler arrives pre-installed for hundreds of millions of people.Market Disruption for Dictation StartupsUntil now, most dictation app development has focused on desktop and iOS, leaving Android relatively underserved. Google's move to close this gap with Rambler puts pressure on standalone apps like Wispr Flow, Willow, SuperWhisper, Monoglogue, Handy, and Typeless. When a platform player enters a market at the operating-system level, standalone apps need a compelling reason—better accuracy, deeper features, or stronger privacy guarantees—to justify a separate download.Future Outlook: The Dictation App ChallengeFor dictation startups, the question is no longer whether they can build something good—it's whether they can build something good enough that users actively go looking for it. With Rambler being limited initially to Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones before expanding to other Android devices, standalone dictation apps will need to differentiate themselves significantly to survive in an increasingly competitive market.

Stephen A Smith's Criticism of Black Athletes Sparks Debate About Race and Politics

Former NBA player Etan Thomas explains why many Black people criticize ESPN's Stephen A Smith, high…
The LeadFormer NBA player Etan Thomas addresses ESPN commentator Stephen A Smith, explaining why many Black people feel he has "betrayed his race" despite his support for HBCUs. The letter outlines specific criticisms of Smith's commentary on Black athletes and his political positions. The Critique of Black AthletesThomas points out that Smith frequently criticizes Black male athletes with "passion and vitriol" that he doesn't reserve for white athletes and executives. He cites examples of Smith attacking figures like Kyrie Irving, Kwame Brown, LeBron James, Terrell Owens, and Kevin Durant while being less critical of white league officials and owners.Political InconsistenciesThe article highlights Smith's adoption of right-wing talking points, including his claim that racism isn't as prevalent in the US as some on the "left" claim. Thomas also notes Smith's controversial positions on ICE actions, his characterization of Democrats' legal efforts against Trump as "lawfare," and his criticism of Black politicians like Jasmine Crockett for not being respectful enough to Trump. The Voting Rights DebateThomas takes issue with Smith's suggestion that Black people should vote Republican to make Democrats work for their votes. He points out that while Democrats may not do enough for Black people, Republicans actively work against their interests, particularly citing the Trump administration's celebration of the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act.Economic Impact on Black CommunitiesThe article details the tangible consequences of political alignment, noting that under the current administration, the Black unemployment rate has risen to 8.2%, the highest since its pandemic peak. Thomas also highlights targeted federal workplace policies, cuts to Medicaid, and reduced opportunities in housing, lending, and education that disproportionately affect Black Americans. The Future of Sports CommentaryThomas acknowledges Smith's intelligence and effectiveness as a commentator but suggests he should reconsider the agenda he's promoting. The letter concludes by questioning whether Smith's criticism of Black athletes and his political positions serve the best interests of the Black community he claims to support.

Why Moneyball Stands Out as a Feel-Good Movie

The article discusses why 'Moneyball' is considered a feel-good movie, highlighting its realistic p…
The Enduring Appeal of Moneyball The film 'Moneyball' has aged well since its release in 2011, offering a refreshing take on the sports genre by focusing on character-driven storytelling and intelligent dialogue. A Refreshing Take on Sports Movies 'Moneyball' treats its audience like adults, presenting a story that doesn't rely on over-the-top action sequences or melodrama. Instead, it explores the world of baseball through the lens of data analysis and the challenges faced by the Oakland Athletics, the poorest team in baseball. The Strength of the Cast The film boasts career-best performances from Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics, and Jonah Hill as Peter Brand, a character based on Beane's former assistant Paul DePodesta. Their on-screen chemistry and nuanced portrayals add depth to the story. Balancing Science and Humanity The movie strikes a balance between explaining complex data analysis and maintaining a human-centered narrative. This approach sets it apart from other sports films, such as 'The Big Short,' which focuses more on the science and less on character development. A Satisfying Conclusion The film's ending, which does not follow the typical Hollywood happy ending formula, leaves viewers with a lasting impression. The Oakland Athletics do not win the World Series, and Beane's decision to turn down a job offer raises questions about his motivations and loyalty. 'Moneyball' is available to rent digitally in the US, on Now TV in the UK, and on Amazon Prime and Binge in Australia.

Super Furry Animals' Stirring Reunion Showcases Immaculate Songcraft

After a decade-long hiatus, Super Furry Animals return to the stage with a stirring performance tha…
The Triumphant ReturnIn the gloom of an underlit Barrowlands stage, a man in black is holding a large inflatable phone to his ear and chanting these words: "SFA OK. SFA OK." The man is Gruff Rhys. The band is Super Furry Animals. And the song, Wherever I Lay My Phone (That's My Home), allows them to reintroduce themselves at this, their second gig after 10 years away. Not that they need much introducing. This Glasgow date sold out fast, mostly thanks to fans – going by the age of the crowd – who loved them first time around. Signed to Creation, the label flush with Oasis money, they came to prominence in the mid-90s goldrush. The Britpop OutsidersAlan McGee thought he had found his own version of Blur, but their Welshness and weirdness put them at odds with Britpop orthodoxy. That madcap reputation has tended to obscure what they really are: a formidable songwriting force.Confirmation of their immense skill and range comes when they perform Run! Christian, Run! followed by Juxtapozed with U. The former is 70s-style country rock, the latter an immaculately crafted soul tune. Both are wonderful. The Vocal MasteryIt doesn't get said enough that Rhys is a beautiful singer. Live performance makes this clear. His voice is essentially mournful, but the songs are so sweet with melody that the impression is of Eeyore transcendent – becoming Tigger through the transforming power of pop. He's not much of a showman. Likewise the rest of the band. Mostly they let the songs sell themselves. Yet they have their moments. At the noisy climax of Receptacle for the Respectable, Rhys, Huw Bunford and Guto Pryce gather centre stage, guitars aloft, and press the necks together. It's a bit Status Quo, a bit rutting giraffe, more than a bit thrilling. The Epic PerformanceAs the two-hour show builds to its peak, they lean into epics: Mountain People, Slow Life and, of course, traditional set-closer The Man Don't Give A Fuck, extended tonight to 12 minutes. A singalong protest song against whatever evils of the world you want it to be about, it has lost none of its cathartic anger and vulgar cheer. The Road AheadThe Super Furry Animals have announced additional dates following their successful Glasgow return. Fans can catch them at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, 14 and 15 May; before they continue touring the UK. This reunion not only satisfies longtime fans but also introduces a new generation to their unique musical blend that defies easy categorization.
