The Growing Resistance Against AI Datacenters: A Fight for Democracy

A growing movement to resist the construction of AI datacenters is gaining momentum across the US, …
The Rise of the Anti-Datacenter Movement Since the 2024 presidential inauguration, the Trump administration has been rolling out the red carpet for Silicon Valley's AI ambitions, doling out billions in federal subsidies and contracts to the cash-rich sector. However, an unlikely coalition has emerged to resist the AI takeover by targeting the industry's core infrastructure: datacenters. Local Opposition to Datacenters In 2025, about 48 datacenter projects worth an estimated $156bn were blocked or stalled by local opposition. The movement is growing, with communities across the US coming together to protest the construction of datacenters. From rural North Carolina to suburban Virginia, and from the foothills of New Mexico to the farmlands of Oregon, ordinary people are organizing to say no to a status quo that allows tech lobbyists to push through datacenter deals at a breathtaking clip. The Data Behind the Resistance 48 datacenter projects worth $156bn were blocked or stalled in 2025 10 counties in Indiana have enacted moratoriums or temporary bans on new AI datacenters The Seminole Nation in Oklahoma recently passed a moratorium for their territory Project after project has been cancelled in New Jersey due to local fury The Impact of the Anti-Datacenter Movement The fight against datacenters is not just about limiting local development; it represents a critical new front in the fight against tech-enabled authoritarianism. Datacenters provide a physical place and focal point where people can show up and directly confront out-of-control and otherwise impossible-to-reach tech billionaires. The movement is also bringing people together across partisan divides, with a shared concern for the environmental and social impacts of datacenters. The Future of AI Regulation The anti-datacenter movement is essential to amassing the political leverage required to implement popular and sensible safety measures. A national moratorium bill has been introduced by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which would force AI regulation. Maine has become the first state to pass a statewide moratorium on hyperscale datacenters. As the movement continues to grow, it's clear that AI is shaping up to be a key fault line in this year's midterms and the 2028 presidential race.

The Rise of the Influencer: Redefining the Cannes Spectacle

The Cannes Film Festival has evolved beyond cinema, becoming a global stage for fashion and social …
The Evolution of the Croisette: From Cinema to SpectacleThe Cannes Film Festival has transcended its original purpose as a cinematic showcase to become a premier global stage for fashion, luxury, and social status. For ten days, the Croisette transforms into a high-stakes runway where the pursuit of exclusivity outweighs the actual film screenings. The event is no longer just about watching movies; it is about gaining entry to an exclusive club where the 'jet set' culture reigns supreme. The New Celebrity Class: Influencers and the Digital GatekeepersA significant shift in the festival's demographic is the rise of a new type of celebrity: the influencer. Unlike traditional actors or directors, these individuals often start from unconventional paths and gain entry through digital clout rather than acting credits. From dawn to dusk, the streets are filled with 'flashy, jazzy, and tacky' displays of wealth, creating a fashion show minus the red carpet. This influx has blurred the lines between traditional media and social platforms, as magazines and digital influencers collaborate to promote brands and showcase the celebrities who wear them.Digital Fame vs. Traditional Credentials: Figures like Yingying A-tupho, a model and classical Thai dancer, represent the new wave of attendees who may not have access to the official red carpet but are still central to the festival's visual economy.Brand Endorsement: The presence of influencers has solidified the festival's role as a marketing hub for luxury houses, turning every outfit into a potential advertisement.Brand Power and the Economics of DesireThe festival operates on an 'image-driven economy' where luxury is embodied right down to the skin. Whether it is Chanel jewellery or a Louis Vuitton leather bag, genuine or otherwise, logos have become synonymous with glamour and power. The media plays a central role in creating desire, curating the narrative that these brands are essential for social acceptance at the festival.Visual Consumption: The festival serves as a laboratory for luxury brands to test new products and styling concepts in a high-pressure, high-visibility environment. The 'Tacky' Aesthetic: The text notes a trend towards 'excessive Botox' and dazzling jewellery, suggesting a culture where the pursuit of perfection and visibility is paramount.Strict Codes and Social StratificationThe atmosphere on the Croisette is defined by rigid social codes and strict dress requirements that reinforce the festival's exclusivity. At the Grand Théâtre Lumière, strict evening wear rules apply: women must wear a 'long dress or little black dress,' while men require a 'black or navy blue tuxedo with a bow tie or dark tie.' Trainers are strictly prohibited, and entry may be refused for those who fail to adhere to these sartorial standards.Physical Barriers: The separation of entrances for film crews, official guests, and the public creates a tangible barrier between the elite and the general public.Performance of Status: The requirement to change outfits multiple times a day and the jostling for position at the exit of screenings highlight the performative nature of the festival experience. The Future of the Festival: A Hybrid Entertainment HubAs the festival continues to prioritize fashion and social spectacle over pure cinema, it will likely evolve into a hybrid entertainment hub. The line between the red carpet and the streets will continue to blur, with influencers playing an increasingly central role in defining the festival's cultural impact. The 'society of the spectacle' is not just a backdrop; it is becoming the primary product being sold to the world.

Is xAI a Neocloud Now?

xAI has partnered with Anthropic to sell its compute capacity, marking a shift towards becoming a n…
The Unexpected Partnership On Wednesday, xAI and Anthropic announced a surprise partnership that has the Claude-maker buying out "all of the compute capacity at [xAI's] Colossus 1 data center," roughly 300MW that allowed Anthropic to immediately raise its usage limits. It's a huge deal for xAI, likely worth billions of dollars. More importantly, it immediately monetized one of the company's most impressive accomplishments, turning xAI from a consumer to a provider of compute. The Strategic Implications It's tempting to see the arrangement as a shot at OpenAI amid the ongoing lawsuit. But Musk's explanation on X was that xAI had already moved training to a newer data center, Colossus 2, and xAI simply didn't need them both. In the short term, there's an obvious logic at work. xAI's existing products are mostly focused on Grok, which has seen plummeting usage since the image generation debacles earlier this year. The Financial Impact xAI's partnership with Anthropic is likely worth billions of dollars. xAI was valued at $230 billion in its January funding round. CoreWeave, which oversees a comparable quantity of computing power, is worth less than a third of that. The Industry Context But beyond the short-term benefit, the Anthropic partnership sends an unusual message about where Elon Musk's priorities really lie. It suggests the company's real business may be more about building data centers than training AI models. It's rare to see a major tech company treat compute resources this way when companies like Google and Meta, which are also training models, are building more data centers. The Future Outlook By focusing on data centers (earthbound and otherwise), xAI is positioning itself more like a neocloud business: buying GPUs from Nvidia and renting them out to model developers like Anthropic. It's a far more difficult business, squeezed by both chip suppliers and the shifting cycles of demand. Musk's version of a neocloud is more ambitious, as you might expect. Some of the data centers might be in space — at least by 2035, if things go according to plan.

A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare's Globe: A Joyful, Interactive Revival

Director Emily Lim's production of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' at the Globe Theatre o…
The Joyful Revival of a ClassicDirector Emily Lim's production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Globe Theatre offers a rare treat - a Shakespearean comedy that genuinely makes the audience laugh while maintaining heartfelt elements. The production is described as generous, creative, and clever, with an eye toward making the audience feel included in the theatrical experience.Extravagant Design ElementsThe production features gloriously extravagant costumes designed by Fly Davis, a set that spontaneously blooms from designer Aldo Vázquez, and hearty folk music by Jim Fortune. These visual and auditory elements combine to create a vibrant, immersive experience that appeals to all ages, though parents may want to cover children's eyes during slightly naughtier moments.Revolutionary Audience IntegrationWhat sets this production apart is its innovative audience interaction. Lim, who has spent her career folding drama and community together, particularly through the National Theatre's Public Acts project, has integrated the audience directly into the action. In the closing scenes, a spectator even joins Puck on stage for a hand-tying ceremony, creating spontaneous cheers and a sense of shared experience.Standout PerformancesMichael Grady-Hall's inspired portrayal of Puck, reimagined as more court jester than fairy, spends much of the show joking with the crowd and pelting everyone with bubbles. As Bottom, the pretentious am-dram actor who transforms into a sparkly ass, Adrian Richards demonstrates comic flair in every movement. Romaya Weaver's fiery performance as Helena adds spunk to the otherwise less impactful love story.Minor Flaws in an Otherwise Stellar ProductionThe review notes a few shortcomings: the crisscrossing love story fails to make much impact, the constant musical skits don't always work, and Audrey Brisson, while talented, strains too hard for an air of mystery and magic as the Fairy Queen. However, these issues are forgiven in a show that clearly prioritizes audience enjoyment and accessibility of Shakespeare's work. The Globe Theatre: Perfect Setting for InnovationThe Globe Theatre provides the ideal setting for Lim's innovative approach. The production runs until August 29, offering London audiences and tourists the opportunity to experience this fresh take on a classic play in its original performance space. The combination of historical authenticity with contemporary theatrical innovation creates a unique cultural experience.

Producer Accused Rebel Wilson of ‘Fudging’ Story in Defamation Trial

In a federal court hearing, a producer claims Rebel Wilson suggested actress Charlotte MacInnes was…
Lead: Allegations of Story‑Fudging Surface in CourtA producer who worked on Rebel Wilson's directorial debut The Deb testified that Wilson accused actress Charlotte MacInnes of retracting a sexual‑harassment complaint to advance her career, describing the claim as "fudging". The court heard conflicting narratives about a post‑medical‑episode bath shared with co‑producer Amanda Ghost, and the producer's role in removing MacInnes from shared accommodation. The Bath Incident and Social‑Media Defamation ClaimsMacInnes alleges Wilson defamed her on social media, labeling her a liar and a sell‑out for allegedly withdrawing a complaint. The disputed incident involved Ghost suffering a medical episode on 5 September 2023 at Bondi Beach, after which she and MacInnes shared a warm‑up bath in swimwear. Neither the actress nor a witness reported any misconduct, but Wilson’s posts suggested otherwise. No Monetary Damages DisclosedThe filing does not specify any claimed financial loss or damages; the focus remains on reputational harm and the veracity of the alleged complaint.Impact on Australian Film Industry and Defamation LawThe testimony underscores the delicate balance producers and talent must maintain when handling harassment allegations on set. It also highlights the heightened scrutiny of defamation claims in Australia, where public figures face stricter standards for proving false statements that damage reputation. Industry observers warn that such high‑profile disputes could prompt tighter internal reporting protocols and more cautious public commentary.Potential Outcomes and Next StepsThe court will need to assess whether Wilson’s statements constitute actionable defamation or are protected opinion. A ruling in favor of MacInnes could set a precedent for how social‑media accusations are treated in entertainment‑law contexts, while a dismissal may reinforce the current threshold for proving reputational injury. Both parties are expected to present further evidence in the coming weeks.

Trump Backs FIFA Decision to Allow Iran to Play at World Cup in US

Trump's Unexpected Support for Iranian World Cup Participation Former US President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed FIFA's controversial decision to permit Iran's national team to compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This unexpected stance comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with Trump's support potentially influencing the broader discourse around international sports and politics. FIFA's Controversial Decision on Iranian Team Eligibility FIFA, world football's governing body, faced significant pressure regarding Iran's participation in the upcoming tournament. The decision to allow Iran to compete was made despite political objections from various groups concerned about Iran's human rights record and its government's stance toward Israel. Trump's endorsement adds weight to FIFA's position, suggesting that sporting events should remain separate from political disputes. Economic Implications of Iranian Participation The inclusion of Iran in the World Cup presents substantial economic considerations. The tournament is expected to generate billions of dollars in revenue through tourism, merchandise sales, and broadcasting rights. Iranian participation would likely draw significant fan support, potentially boosting ticket sales and viewership numbers. Additionally, American businesses could benefit from increased tourism if Iranian supporters are able to travel to the United States for matches. Geopolitical Ramifications for US-Iran Relations Trump's support for Iran's World Cup participation reflects a complex approach to international relations. While maintaining his hardline stance on many issues, Trump appears to recognize the potential of sports as a diplomatic tool. This position contrasts with some of his earlier policies toward Iran and could signal a recalibration in how the US approaches engagement with the country. The decision may also influence how other nations navigate the intersection of sports and politics in future international competitions. Future of Sports Diplomacy in International Relations The Trump endorsement of Iran's World Cup participation may set a precedent for future sporting events as venues for diplomatic engagement. As global tensions continue to fluctuate, sports competitions like the World Cup could increasingly serve as platforms for dialogue between nations with otherwise strained relations. This development suggests that despite political differences, the universal appeal of sports continues to offer pathways for international connection and understanding.

Salesforce Crowdsources AI Roadmap with Customers

Salesforce is crowdsourcing its AI roadmap in real-time with its customers, meeting with some as of…
Salesforce's AI Roadmap Strategy Artificial intelligence continues to advance at a dizzying clip, forcing enterprises to develop and release new products quicker than ever or risk becoming irrelevant to a faster-moving competitor. Salesforce believes it has found a strategy that allows it to keep up even if it isn’t clear where AI is headed next. The customer management software giant is crowdsourcing its AI roadmap in real time. Crowdsourcing AI Development Salesforce is certainly not the only company to work intimately with its customers for feedback on its products. However, it’s notable considering the sheer size of the company, the pace of new product launches or fixes to existing ones, and the granular level of these relationships. These aren’t annual or even quarterly discussions. Salesforce is meeting with some customers as often as once a week. The Role of Customer Feedback “The 18,000 customers are a wellspring of information and a wealth of information that is really needed to get to customer success,” Jayesh Govindarajan, executive vice president at Salesforce AI, told TechCrunch in a recent interview. “The stack that we’ve built has resonated with these customers. Over time we can get context to be better, and as it gets better, and LLMs get better, agent systems do more and more fully autonomous behaviors. That’s a long-running innovation track and we’re going to invest in that.” Rapid Product Releases Salesforce credits its customers for the rate of its product releases. The company told TechCrunch that by letting its customers lead the way, it is able to build an AI product roadmap that can quickly react to where AI technology is headed. Real-World Impact Engine, a travel management platform, is one of the companies within Salesforce’s customer feedback loop. And it’s not a casual relationship. The company’s operations team meets with Salesforce weekly, according to Engine founder and CEO Elia Wallen. Through the partnership, Engine gets access to AI tools before they’re released. Wallen said the access helps Engine stay competitive and get more value out of these tools than it would otherwise. The Future of AI Development This strategy also allows the company to roll out solutions and workflows built by users to its broader customer base too. Federal credit union PenFed has been able to slim down its tech stack by working closely with Salesforce, Shree Reddy, the company’s chief innovation officer and executive vice president, told TechCrunch.

John Terry’s Far‑Right Turn: From Captain to Controversial Figure

Former England captain John Terry has sparked a fresh backlash after endorsing a far‑right Instagra…
The Controversial Instagram EndorsementIn early April, John Terry liked an Instagram post by former MP Rupert Lowe that urged a ban on foreign‑born benefit claimants and the deportation of “migrants who are incapable of financially supporting themselves”. Terry responded with a simple “100% yes”, prompting an immediate, scathing reaction from former teammate Denis Wise, who replied “200%”.Political Fallout and Public ReactionThe endorsement reignited accusations that Terry has long harboured far‑right sympathies, echoing earlier instances where he praised Lowe’s anti‑immigration pamphlet “Mass Deportations”. Critics argue the former captain is normalising extremist rhetoric that was once considered beyond the pale in mainstream sport.Terry’s Coaching Ambitions Amidst the StormWhile the controversy rages, Terry continues to chase a managerial role at Chelsea FC. After being passed over for the head‑coach vacancy in January, he remains on a consultancy contract, mentoring academy sides two days a month. The club’s reluctance to appoint him has been cited as a possible factor in his turn to high‑visibility political commentary.Broader Trend of Radicalisation in Retired FootballersMatt Le Tissier resurfaced in Southampton’s advisory board after promoting conspiracy theories about Ukraine.Rickie Lambert and Joey Barton have also embraced fringe narratives on social media. The pattern suggests a post‑retirement vacuum where former players seek relevance through provocative platforms. What Lies Ahead for Terry and the SportIf the backlash persists, Terry may pivot further into media work, podcasts, and right‑wing advocacy, potentially positioning himself for a future parliamentary candidacy. For football, the challenge will be balancing freedom of expression with safeguarding the sport’s inclusive image, especially as clubs grapple with the reputational risk of employing figures linked to extremist discourse.
