A Radical Vision for Global JusticeImagine a future in which everyone enjoys high levels of wellbeing; where 90% of the world's population doubles their income but works half the hours we work today. A world in which the bottom half of humanity sees its share of global wealth rise from just 2% today to 30%; a world where we consume enough, but nobody over-consumes. And imagine achieving this on a planet that can comfortably sustain human life without its climate breaking down.Against the bleak techno-authoritarian futures now being sold to us, a radical new vision for global progress in the 21st century feels urgently needed. The most credible vision is one in which the habitability of the planet is a precondition for human development and equality.Our new report examines the conditions required for the world to progress towards this ambition on an economically and ecologically compatible path, by the end of the century. Its conclusion? A global transformation that reconciles planetary habitability and high standards of wellbeing for all is possible – as long as three conditions are simultaneously met.The Three Pillars of Sustainable TransformationFast decarbonisation of energy systems is necessary. But we also need a major shift away from overconsumption towards "sufficiency." This would involve a sharp reduction in labour hours and the use of raw materials, along with big changes in consumption patterns, food habits, land use and forest cover. Financing and politically sustaining decarbonisation and sufficiency will require a drastic reduction in inequality of income, wealth and power, between countries and within them.The Global Justice Report is the first attempt to propose a fully quantified plan for this transition. It combines four dimensions that today's debates often treat separately: redistribution at the world scale; a deep reform of the international financial and economic order; a radical transformation of energy systems; and substantial shifts in consumption patterns. Compared with most climate scenarios (including those of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), the main novelty is that we model all four dimensions together – and place inequality and sufficiency at the centre of the analysis.The Economic Transformation: Convergence and ProsperityWhat would this transition deliver? At its heart is convergence between countries. Average per capita national income, today separated by a 16-fold gap between the poorest (€290 a month in sub-Saharan Africa) and richest (€4,590 in North America/Oceania) regions of the world, would rise towards a common level of about €5,000 a month in all countries by 2100.But this convergence is not just monetary. Annual working hours per employed person would fall from roughly 2,100 to about 1,000, continuing the long shift towards shorter working time; while the share of global working hours devoted to education and health would rise from 11% to 43%. Women and men would converge on equal pay and on an equal share of economic and domestic labour.These shifts would be financed and governed through new institutions. A global justice fund would spend an average of 10% of world GDP a year from 2026 to 2060 on country dividends and investment, against the less than 0.4% that aid and the combined budgets of the UN, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank represent today. Its resources would come from a world sovereign fund holding 10% of the world capital stock, a global wealth tax rising to 20% a year on billionaires and a global income tax rising to 90% at the very top, each touching about 1% of the world's population.The Environmental Impact: Limiting Global HeatingAll of this would unfold within a habitable climate. Thanks to sustainable convergence and fast decarbonisation, global heating would reach 1.8C, against more than 4C on current trends.The result is not a transfer from many to few but a gain for almost everyone. Close to 90% of the world's population would double their income between 2026 and 2100, and once leisure and a habitable planet are counted, more than 99% come out ahead. The plan also redistributes power. Today, the richest regions hold four times as many votes at the IMF and World Bank as their share of the world's population would dictate; in the new order, every inhabitant would have equal voice, backed by an international clearing union and a new international currency to end the exorbitant privileges of the dominant powers and to address global trade imbalances.The Path Forward: Political Will and Coalition BuildingA habitable, equal and prosperous 21st century is materially possible. The carbon budget allows it and history offers precedents at comparable scales: universal suffrage, the universalisation of healthcare and education, the halving of working hours and the sharp compression of inequality over the 20th century. Technical impossibility is not what is standing in the way, but rather the absence of a shared vision of social progress, at once concrete and radical. What it will take instead is political choice, and the hard work of coalition-building behind it.Our report is part of a broader international agenda for planetary habitability, social justice and reform of the global financial architecture – including the Bridgetown agenda launched by Barbados in 2022, the Sevilla Commitment on development finance, the UN tax convention process, and G20 initiatives led by Brazil and South Africa on global inequality. The main contribution of this report is to place these proposals within a quantified institutional framework, modelling socioeconomic convergence, temperature change and distributional trajectories up to the year 2100.

"This is what Playa Guiones looked like when we started in 2011," says the executive director of Costas Verdes, a Costa Rican nonprofit. The Coastal Transformation As howler monkeys growl in the background, Bolaños points to the picture next to it – an image of the same patch of land but with scores of flourishing, lush green trees. Today, he says, this is how the beach looks. The reason for the stark difference, says Bolaños, a straight-talking man with a coloured tattoo of the turquoise-browed motmot bird on his left arm, is a sustained tree-planting programme that Costas Verdes started in 2011. The Roots of Reforestation Costas Verdes was founded by then Costa Rican university student Max Tattenbach in 2009. A keen surfer, he wanted to restore the shoreline at his favourite surf spot, Playa Hermosa. "Playa Hermosa is about 6km [3.5 miles] of beach, and it only had one [area of] shade along the entire beach," says Tattenbach. "I used to go surfing there and take my then girlfriend and now wife. She didn't surf and liked to read and chill on the beach, but Playa Hermosa had no shade, so she didn't like going, and it started to become an issue. I promised her I would reforest Playa Hermosa so we could enjoy the beach." The Environmental Impact The project has transformed deforested Pacific coastlines into thriving ecosystems through a community-driven environmental project that has planted more than 100,000 native trees across 34 beaches, reviving wildlife habitats and combating decades of deforestation from cattle farming. Walk along the seafront in Nosara, over 100km further down the coast from Hermosa, and the plan appears to have paid off, with thousands of trees such as tropical almond trees, madero negro (Gliricidia sepium) and frangipani lining the trails and offering shade to beachgoers, creating a thriving ecosystem for wildlife. The Historical Context of Deforestation Bolaños, who joined the organisation as a volunteer in 2011, became project director three years later and executive director in 2024, says deforestation has changed the area's landscape. "Last century, we had great coastal forests all along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica," he says. Bolaños estimates that between the 1940s and 1970s, Costa Rica lost 70% of its forest cover, including along the Pacific coast. He puts this down to a boom in livestock farming. "Farmers burned the ecosystems and grew grass to feed the cattle. It was extremely aggressive, poorly planned," he says. "The beachfronts were devastated by cattle farming." The Future of Coastal Restoration What began as a personal quest for shade has evolved into a community-driven environmental movement with significant implications for coastal conservation. The success of Costas Verdes demonstrates how small-scale, community-led initiatives can have a substantial impact on environmental restoration, offering a model for other regions facing similar deforestation challenges. Companies from Russia, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates have also established significant operations in the country to secure this valuable resource.Economic Disparities and Compensation ChallengesIn the traditional bauxite heartlands of Kindia and Boke, the main roads are notably well-maintained, and steady jobs in technical roles or transport logistics have created economic opportunities for some Guineans. In Bembou Silaty, however, the situation remains starkly different—a quiet village without electricity, where farming methods remain untouched by mechanization.People working in technical roles at the mine can earn up to about $300 a month, a significant sum in Guinea. For other locals who make a living from farming, most don't have a regular wage and rely on the yield from their crops. Across Guinea, an estimated half of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihood.Locals in Bembou Silaty say every hectare claimed by mining is a hectare lost to farming, in a country that spent more than $500m importing rice in 2024. "They give you compensation for your land, but it's not enough, and in the end, it's mismanaged," Aliou said. "Within a month or two, someone who received 50 or 100 million Guinean francs ($5,700-11,400) has nothing left. No land, no money. They have to start over, from below zero."Environmental Degradation and Water ContaminationThe environmental impact of bauxite mining in communities like Bembou Silaty has been profound. Not all homes in the village of about 5,000 have indoor toilets and plumbing. While a new water point serves nearly all residents, the water contains iron contamination.In neighboring villages, the situation is even more dire. "Since the mining companies came, we've had this problem with the water. The children get sick, and the parents too," said Mariama Kindi Diallo, a farmer. "The doctors tell us not to drink the rain or river water. There are no roads, no school, no phone signal. What are we supposed to do? We are asking for help to have a dignified life."Environmental concerns extend beyond water contamination. Surgical holes drilled into the ground mark where mining companies have tested for bauxite—a reminder to farmers that the impact on the land is felt even before extraction begins. In a recent report, Djami Diallo, the Guinean minister of the environment and sustainable development, stated that each year, certain companies had their impact studies and evaluation reports rejected for failing to comply with environmental standards.The Government's Push for Value AdditionTo address these challenges and increase the benefits for Guinea, the government of Mamady Doumbouya, which came to power in a 2021 coup, is attempting to reorganize the mining sector. It is pressing investors to process bauxite within Guinea, ensuring a portion of the value stays in the country.Processing bauxite into aluminum can multiply its price by 37 times. Instability in Iran amid the US and Israel's war has contributed to rising aluminum prices, which surpassed $3,600 per tonne in April. Doumbouya is set to lead the country for the next seven years, after winning the December 2025 elections with nearly 87 percent of the vote.Achieving this transformation, however, requires a huge increase in electricity generation—power that is non-existent in villages like Bembou Silaty and unreliable even in the capital, Conakry. Guinea is working with neighboring Senegal on a solution: Using Senegalese gas to generate enough electricity to process its bauxite on African soil.The Global Trail of Bauxite and MigrationThe story of Guinea's bauxite extends far beyond its borders. More than 3,000km away, in Parets del Valles, Spain, the journey's end plays out. For Spain, Europe's largest consumer of Guinean bauxite, more than 90 percent of its imports come from Guinea.The aluminium produced there feeds the automotive industry and serves both industrial and domestic purposes. In Spain, there is light, hot water, paved roads—all the base elements of a decent life that remain elusive in many parts of Guinea.Increasingly, more boats are leaving directly from Guinea, towards the Canary Islands and on to mainland Europe. According to Frontex, the European Union border security agency, more Guineans arrived in the Canary Islands, Spain, in 2023 (2,324) than in the previous 13 years combined. In 2024 and 2025 combined, another 6,000 Guineans arrived.Many left, following the bauxite trail, hoping to find something more in the places where their resources are both enjoyed and exploited. "If you compare the bauxite we export with what we get in return, the difference is enormous," Aliou reflects. "We gain almost nothing. Just enough to survive."
